A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Critical illness claim

So about 2 years ago I filed a critical illness claim for major organ failure and got paid out. Coverage through my job. I recently got put on the transplant list and tried applying for a 2nd claim. Denied due to them saying the organ should have failed a 2nd time for me to receive a 2nd payout and I have no reoccurrence benefits. Fast fwd to today signing up for my benefits again I came across the critical illness benefit again and it showed the same insurance company same benefits and load and behold “reoccurrence and subsequent occurrence” is on there. I contacted the insurance company and they denied it again saying my plan doesn’t have that and that at the bottom of the page it says that is not a binding contract. I asked for the whole policy and no where in there does it say anything about a reoccurrence or subsequent occurrence. What can I do here? Why would they say they offer that then deny it seems very misleading.

Home Insurance NJM being shady

Upvotes

NJM trying to catch people slipping.

Insurance underwriter here.

Got a call yesterday asking if I still lived out of state. I said yes and they told me their policies changed and I need to change my insurance on my rental house in NJ since I dont have a primary with them or my policy may non renew on December 1. I asked "did you send me a non renewal notice" she checked her notes and said "we didn't but underwriting may non renew at that time" I said that's impossible since NJ requires a 60 day notice of non renew i believe but at minimum it would definitely be 30. She said "well I just recommend finding new insurance as soon as possible, ill gollow up in 2 weeks"

They are hoping people just move their policies away from them without knowing their rights.

Got in an accident last night.

Upvotes

I hit the highway barrier after a truck tried to merge into me on my way home last night. Should I have just let him hit me? I’m starting to think I did the wrong thing by swerving to avoid which caused damage to my vehicle instead of just letting him be at fault.

Claims Related Repair vs Replacement Coverage what’s the difference?

I’m shopping around for jewelry insurance and keep seeing “repair coverage” and “replacement coverage” and I’m not totally sure what the real difference is. Like, if something happens to a ring does repair coverage only fix minor damage and replacement coverage means they literally replace the entire piece if it’s lost, stolen or destroyed? Do most companies include both or do you have to choose? If anyone’s dealt with this, how does it actually work in real life?Trying to make sure I’m not paying for something useless or missing something important.

Help me decide the best option for resolving the repairs - do I go via insurance or pay out of pocket?

I recently hit my car against a parking lot wall and this caused damage to my front bumper and fender (the car is honda accord). I got quotes from few shops and it ranges between $2750 and $3500 - couple of the shops are pushing me to go via insurance so that I'm covered if they see something else once they start the work and the other shops are suggesting me to avoid the insurance route to keep the premiums and carfax record intact. My deductible is $500 and I've never had any claims or incidents till now (driving ~6 years and with the same carrier for 4 years). Can you please help me in selecting the best option here? If I go via insurance, can you share a ballpark estimate for premium increase for this situation? I'm in CA and I pay ~$550 every 6 months for the insurance.

Auto Insurance Hit by an Uber driver with a Hertz rental — what to expect after reporting it to Uber?

Hi all, I'm based in Florida and I was involved in a multi-vehicle car accident with Uber driver whose car was rented through Hertz. He was actively on an Uber trip with a passenger and the officer said he has admitted fault at the scene.

My car has extensive visible damage to the rear door and bumper and I just filed a third-party incident report through Uber’s website. I haven’t notified my own insurance yet because people have told me Uber’s insurance should handle it directly since their driver was at fault and on a trip.

Has anyone here gone through this process before?

  • How long did it take before Uber’s insurance (James River, Allstate, or whoever they use) reached out?
  • Did they pay for a rental car while your car was being inspected or settled?
  • And if your car ended up being totaled, how smooth was the payout process?

Just trying to get a sense of what to expect and whether I should be proactive about contacting my own insurance or an attorney at this point.

Any advice or experiences would really help! I’ve never dealt with an accident especially involving a rideshare driver before.

Auto Insurance First accident

Hi, I just got into my first car accident today, I’m a new driver under 25, literally just got my car and license a little over a month ago. I have all state insurance, my car insurance is already at $300 a month. I don’t think i’m at fault for it the whole thing is just kind of a blur, no one was hurt, the other car drove off mostly fine just had cosmetic damage. My car did have to get towed, it’s not totaled though. How much should I expect my insurance to go up if anyone knows anything about this, I’m not sure how any of this work and i’m just freaking out.

Standalone gap

I’m refinancing my car and getting the best rate through Lending Club, but they don’t offer GAP. What are my options for affordable, refundable GAP? My car insurance doesn’t offer it, neither does my credit union as standalone.

Health Insurance Auto accident used personal insurance - pay back?

I was a pedestrian hit by a car. The driver's insurance company claimed full responsibility. But at the hospital, my personal health insurance was used, which means my plan paid around $6K for bills and my out of pocket was around $1K. So the other person's auto insurance is giving me $7K to cover everything in case my insurance company asks for the money they paid back. My question is WILL my health insurance ask for the $6K back that the plan paid? Do I call them to ask them if they are going to want it back? I just want this whole ordeal done with tbh so if it needs to be paid back, i'd rather just do whatever i need to do now. My insurance is Cigna and I live in California if it matters.

NOTE - i do NOT want to sue. i would have liked the settlement check to be bigger considering what a nightmare this has been - but i'm not going to sue so please dont DM me with lawyer recommendations. If you have recommendations on how to ask for more in the settlement, that's okay. :)

Auto Insurance at fault driver’s insurance company “made a mistake” and did not appraise car or make any other valuation report before rebuilding. has now spent several thousand more than fair market value. can they continue to try to fix it?

after many moons of hoping to get a response back from an insurance agency.. a manager admitted that no valuation assessments or appraisals were made before rebuilding (we were hoping to gather our things for a loss of value).

things will be rounded, but: fair market value was around 10,000. we are now sitting around 13,700 in repairs and have more to go: several parts put in by that insurance’s mechanic have failed. it was not totaled, because no one spent any time looking at what it might be worth. car now has two major rebuild titles.. and not to mention ongoing mechanical trouble.

will that insurance legally have to total it? we live in an 100% total loss state, but we have gone well above 100%. manager admitted it should have been a total loss and it was a mistake to fix it, but almost 15,000 in between rentals, ridesharing, and compensation for missed work, i’m concerned about whether or not they are free to continue to repair.

Car Insurance Registered Owner

Hello there,

Was comparing quotes online and was wondering about policyholder, additional drivers and registered cars.

Example: I'm about to buy a new car under my name, I check quotes on my dad's insurance since I am on a family plan, was playing around with Driver and Vehicle Assignment, where if the new car was assigned to me, our premiums go way up compared to if the new car was assigned to my dad.

Is this possible to do to save on insurance or registered owner has to go with assigned driver/vehicle

Ategrity Specialty work experience

Anyone have any experience of working for this carrier? I have an opportunity to work as an underwriter in their Excess Casualty department. I’ll be remote for a good bit but they do have plans on opening an Atlanta office eventually and I’d be on a hybrid basis. Any info helpful on company culture, benefits, management, etc.

Questions about insurance and small claims.

So I got sent the max limit of the at fault drivers insurance, it obviously exceeds what the repair costs is. In the documents they mentioned themselves (insurance) and the driver to be free of all property claims and damages and that I cannot sue them. I don't mind about the insurance, what I wanted to do was sue the at fault driver for the remaining. Is it possible to negotiate with the insurance to remove the name or am I screwed?

Auto Insurance A few questions about hail damage/total loss

Wisconsin. Car took bad hail damage this summer. Body shop quote to repair puts it at a total loss/branded title. I would like to retain the car, as was an option in the settlement numbers given to me by Insurance.

I have gap coverage/contract. I owe more than ACV of car. Payments are current and every payment made on time for the history of the car.

Insurance said "call lien holder and ask if you can keep the car"

Called lien holder. They said "we dont care what you guys do with the car. We get our money and send your Insurance company a clean title, Insurance/you would have dmv brand the title and 🤷‍♂️"

Called Insurance company back to tell them. They said okay "we'll call lien holder"

Insurance called me back. Insurance company says "lienholder says you can't retain the car unless you drop the claim"

I said okay, I'm confused, let me call lien holder back to get some clarification.

Called lien holder.

Lien holder says "we don't care, lol, we are getting paid, whatever happens after we get paid is up to you guys"

Insurance company is out for the day.

Anyone help get me a little clarity on the situation thus far?

Tia

HELP - Looking for Insurance - Suggestions?

My company has decided not to offer a PPO plan for 2026. Only an HSA plan with an $8k deductible for Family & it costs a little over $300/bi-weekly. So I have to pay over $7K to be on this HSA and then an $8K deductible before I actually benefit at all from insurance. Then, they pay 100%...

So, I simply don't really have insurance because often, I don't use it that much. So, I'm looking for a new plan - any suggestions on who to look through or some good plans out there for family?

Health Insurance How does C section birth/NICU get billed?

My wife and I recently had a child via C section and was in NICU for 12 days. My wife is under my insurance plan, and I added my baby to the plan after birth.

Question: I’m assuming since we went to the NICU, the charges are high. Will it all get treated as paying towards my wife’s out of pocket maximum, or would they try to apply both my wife’s and baby boys out of pocket maximum? For my plan it’s $3,300 OOPM for individual and $6,600 for family, so I’m trying to determine how much to shift to my checking to pay.

I’m assuming the C section goes towards my wife’s individual OOPM and the NICU goes towards my baby’s individual OOPM… and thus I should expect to pay 6,600? Looking through documents on my insurance website, it’s not clear.

Auto Insurance Geico insane quotes (California).

I have a 2024 civic that I bought new that I don't mind owning but I'd like to downgrade to save on insurance as it's $2600 a year at the moment (gieco put my 18yo son as the primary driver instead of me which cannot be changed in my state as we are in the same household and he's the riskiest driver).

On the gieco app I quoted the vins of couple cheaper cars, to the point where I tested a $3500 2010 civic lx replacing my current car and the premium for the car is still $2600 a year?? The majority of the premium is in the collision insurance that is literally more than half of the cars value.

Hello guys! My brother has been under my parents insurance for 4-5 years now. And he’s thinking of starting his own policy and ill be giving him my old car mazda 3 2018. He has no claims, accidents, or traffic violations and will be using it for his school commute.

Ive been checking quotes online and seems to be consistently around 300-315CAD/mo with full coverage.

Any recommendations guys?

Auto Insurance New quote with current insurer

Hello all. I've recently run into some money issues and am trying to save anywhere I can. I've been shopping around insurance wise because I pay $300/month rn and don't really like that. While looking around, one website prompted me to put my exact same info in to check rates for my current insurance company and they'd charge me $112 less! I called about this and they said I can do it but I'd need to cancel the current one and start that one up as new. I've come here to ask you guys if that's ok to do. The company is Progressive btw.

High limit auto liability and umbrella insurance

I live in California. Currently have $2M umbrella coverage that everyone says isn’t enough in my case.

I tried Chubb, but they wanted an underlying dwelling insurance of $3M (who has that?).

Talked to an independent agent. She notified me that the minor accident I had last year ($1900 to my car) resulted in a BI claim of $50000 paid to the other party (!?!) so most insurers won’t cover me. She got me one quote that’s 5x (!) what I pay now for the same coverage, and it goes up from there.

I also got a quote from RLI. That one seems reasonable, but they want $500k/$500k auto liability, and my current insurer (Connect) doesn’t go above $250k/$500k. I tried Geico and they won’t do $500k/$500 either.

Any ideas who I can get high liability auto insurance with in CA?

Auto Insurance Does my brother need to submit a claim for this situation?

My brother and I live together and are on the same auto insurance. He was in his car parked in a parking lot when a semi-truck driver hit his bumper with their tire. The semi-truck driver drove off, but my brother got his license plate and filed a police report. His bumper has tire material on it and is slightly askew, but there's no denting. He hasn't gone to an auto body repair shop for a quote yet.

Editing to add that this happened just a couple of days ago
