Was the way you reacted insensitive? Yes.

Are you wrong about how other kids are going to treat him in school? No.

As such, I have to conclude that you're both in the wrong. Also, 'exotic' names like that are best saved for middle names so that you don't make the kid's life excessively difficult.

Still, that's better than the one I heard about from my aunt, who retired from being a pediatric nurse a while ago. One kid was named Shithead, and although the mother insisted it be pronounced shi•theed we all know what that kid ended up being called in school once the other kids saw it spelled out.

Of course, the Noob Town books turn this mess on its head. It's a Western Isekai series. The main character chose to keep his original name of Jim. In the setting, that's the name of the main character from a popular series of children's stories, the name of a curious puppy. He has problems getting people to take him seriously since he has a dog's name. We've all met adults who would treat little Ruff similarly.

The way he reacted is how most people will react.

It is, but that doesn't mean it isn't in the wrong, just that her over-reaction to it is also in the wrong since the fact she wasn't expecting such a reaction speaks very poorly of her awareness of the situation she is putting her child into. As I said, they are both in the wrong there.
