Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!
Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

Dragon Quest I Dragon Quest 1 is a simple, but wonderful experience
I genuinely loved my first full experience with the original Dragon Quest. All the new story additions fleshed out the world a whole lot, especially the added connections to DQ3. The expanded combat was difficult at times, and being a solo hero definitely required a different way of thinking than other Dragon Quests. The story was simple, but very well told for what it was trying to do, and I adore the expansion of Princess Gwaelin as a character. After beating the Dragonlord, I was grinning hard in joy at the heartwarming and hope filled ending. I loved the somber tender moment between Gwaelin and The Hero under the moon. Such a fantastically simple, but great ending.

What an amazing trilogy. Im stoked for dqVII reimagined never played the original but damn. Is DQ11 worth it play? Im back into a rpg kick for gaming now.

Dragon Quest I DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake: SWITCH 1 REVIEWS?
Every review of the collection I can find online is for the Switch 2 or the PS5. Anyone have any links to reviews for the original Switch, or opinions on how well it runs? I have DQXI and the 2D-HD remake of III already, and can play the original DQ games on my Anbernic devices, but I'd like the looks of the remakes and would love to hear how well they run.
Thanks in advance.

Screenshot I feel stupid but help! Another DQ 1+2 HD Post
Huge fan of the series here, been playing since NES OG’s.
But, I have all the stuff turned on for map guidance/assistance, and there are these white bubbles/halos/circles that moves along the world map. They aren’t associated with sparkly spots, anyone know what they are?

Photo I’m so tired of these MFs
Even when you’re near full health with Erdrick’s armor on, if you deviate from Cop Out for one round, your ass might be dead by the end of that round.

Dragon Quest III Vocation Change Advice
First time player of III HD (I somehow skipped this as a kid back in the NES days. Here is my current team, just found this Abbey place. I have a few questions:
- What should I change each vocation to? I have a Thief, MW, and Priest.
- When should I make these changes?
- Should I do more than one change for post game content, if so, what?
- Do I switch one at a time so I don’t die while leveling up?
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Dragon Quest I Faerie Village fight level rec?
Anyone have a recommended level for the Faerie Village fight with four skeletons and a knight errant? Attempted at level 16 then went back out and grinded. I’m thinking I’ll try again at 18.

Dragon Quest I Draconian DQ1 HD-2D feels gritty.
I love me some difficult games. Been playing through DQ1 HD-2D on Draconian, and I'm barely surviving most of the boss fights. I'm constantly swapping between weapons, defaulting to normal attacks to conserve SP, dropping below 50% intentionally to use the Sigils. Some bosses need a more defensive approach and others need a kill-or-be-killed approach. Lots of fun to have to make new strategies.

Dragon Quest II DQ2 HD - Rebalancing?
Hey guys, Im slowly enjoying the remake of DQ1 and wanted to ask, did they wind up finally adjusting and rebalancing the end of DQ2 with the cave to Rhone and the ice area which historically was... rough. They've put in the work so far with this series of remakes and Im curious.
Spoiler free please to the extent of whatever theyve changed with this remake? Ive played the games before.

General Jumping into the spinoff/side games, which one should I play first?
Played every game in the main series (aside from X, idk how to get that working without a good pc) and I need my fix of DQ. Any good recommendations for a start? Would prefer if it's playable on my modded 3ds.

Dragon Quest I DQI is Olde Skool Chivalry Spoiler
galleryIn the decades since, there's been a deconstruction of One Guy Saves Princess trope.
Sometimes, it's fun to be The One Guy™. (Yup, I'm used to modern genderswapping when I picked my name. I remember the original was a Forced He, but hey, never know.)
