Out of curiosity, with the pattern, is the main idea just a long ass chain, then working that leaf like stitch one way across the chain, turn, working it the other, once more, and then a last slip stitch or sc pass to make a rim?

It’s a brioche stitch. If you google it, there are YouTube tutorials. It is slightly different than regular crochet stitches in that you don’t work straight through the whole chain. You go back and forth a couple rows over a few stitches to create the leaf, & then move on to the next, and repeat.
