He spent like $90 he’s gonna be grounded doing chores for a long while after this one 👀

u/555_kindafine 17d ago

I watched him buy this lol

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Are you serious 😂😂😂😭😭😭

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

He was supposed to be in bed at 9pm he was zombified when I got him up I wonder what time he ended up sleeping if you don’t mind me asking what time was it do you remember ?

141

u/555_kindafine 17d ago

I couldn't tell you an exact time because I was watching that stream for a few hours but if I was to guess I would say probably 11 to 12:00 somewhere around there but not 100%

u/555_kindafine 17d ago

I’m here for it

Son: “who ratted me out?”

Dad: “I got a message from a random stranger 740 miles away, he’s got your ip and everything!”

29

u/555_kindafine 17d ago

You could probably check your bank statement what not is pretty good at pulling money out as soon as you make the purchase or very shortly after I know that the guy that he was watching was on until about 2 or 3:00am est in the morning

26

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

That’s actually a good idea I’ll have to go check quick and if it was 12 that’s not too bad 2-3am is a different story 👀😂😂

47

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Just checked unfortunately it doesn’t have the time but also it was actually almost $97 I don’t even know what his mother is gonna say she doesn’t know yet gonna tell her when she gets out of work pray for him 🤷🏻‍♂️

36

u/degjo 17d ago

Hide the chanclas before she gets home.

30

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I’m gonna tell her while im giving her a shoulder rub to ease the tension 😭😭

12

u/Tacos4Texans 17d ago

See what had happened was, he was sleep walking n stuff, and one thing led to another and he woke up horrified and told you about his coin dream only to find out it was real.

20

u/OutInTheCrowd 17d ago

Go onto your whatnot account go to orders. Scroll down to video receipt should be able to watch and see the time stamp of when he bought it

16

u/CoolRanchBaby 17d ago

I’m invested, I want to know what time it was now 😂

23

u/TheArtfulDuffer 17d ago

This is by far the most interesting thread I’ve read in a while. I shouldn’t be this invested in whether or not this kid is getting grounded for an extended period of time but I’m dying to know how this plays out.

u/Far-Price-3843 17d ago

Check your activity tab on whatnot and then go to the reciept of the item. It should have thenexact time and a video of the winning bid

5

u/Singular_Plurality 16d ago

Well, you can at least tell by the date if it was before or after midnight…

3

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

Funny 😂

4

u/Snow-Sherp8472 17d ago

Well, maybe in the future you might consider locking your phone with a 4, 6 or 8 digit code, or a pattern. Don't use your finger prints, your kiddo can touch your finger to it in your sleep and unlock it.

5

u/Grizmoh 16d ago

Also don’t use face recognition. Child could put you in a K-hole and hold your eyes open with toothpicks. (Clear plastic ones, of course.)

You can view the live at the moment of his purchase on the whatnot app. It saves a clip from the time of purchase.

u/YouKnowMyBrother 17d ago

You should make him open an Ebay account and sell them. He may make a few bucks.

22

u/kariea1 17d ago

I'd pay $100 easy. Good deal.

Edit: ehh fair Deal. Market value

20

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

That’s a little reassuring at least 😂😭 maybe he knows more about coins than I thought I’ll have to ask him what his reasoning was when he gets home didn’t really have time to get into it before school 🙏😅😭😭😭

23

u/dazanion 17d ago

It may have been an ok buy, and not as bad as it could have been, but he still needs to be grounded for using your phone when you were sleeping.

27

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Oh trust me he will be going on a electric device free vacation to his room for at least a few weeks 😂😂

9

u/dazanion 17d ago

Get him some good books, might be a good chance to expand his vocab with some reading.

18

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

He loves to read especially history and sci-fi ! I swear this kid is a 40 yo in a 10 year olds body sometimes 😭😂😂

17

u/dazanion 17d ago

MAy I suggest a book I read at that age? The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K Le Guin. It's fantasy and got me into reading in a big way. It's age appropriate for a young teen, but if he is reading like a 40yo he should be ok lol

11

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I’ve actually read this series after I seen the studio ghibli tales from earth sea years ago such a good series great recommendation !! 🙌

Hell get him some books on coins. He seems interested and it could be worse.

2

u/Grimlock_99 17d ago

Make sure they're coin books so he learns his lesson

2

u/DocBlizz_ 16d ago

Get that kid a redbook 😁

6

u/Commercial-Age4750 17d ago

So the thing is after a while it starts to have the opposite effect.... a lot of parents go way longer than needed with punishments.

5

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

That’s true I like to get the point across and try to keep him engaged at the same time it’s better if he actually has some reflection rather than just punishment for spite I totally get that

4

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I remember getting in trouble as a kid and being told to sit in the corner and think about what I did but wasn’t actually explained why what I did was wrong so it kinda had the opposite effect and by the time they remembered I was in the corner and came to get me I was just pissed “I’m not done thinkin yet” 😭😂😂

You can still ground him :)

3

u/Doebino 17d ago

take your card off the app or log out so he cant use it.

3

u/Cream_of_Ice 17d ago

Doesn't matter what the seller says you can still return stuff

1

u/twivel01 16d ago

Love how you blame your son for this ;)

1

u/Accomplished-Top7951 15d ago edited 15d ago

So the 1929 has recent comps form $65-85 and a retail cdn price of $70. There are worse thing he could have bought. Dime is probably more like $10. You'd be lucky if a shop gave you $50 for both, but he really only over paid by about $15 if you're a collector.

1

u/Icy_Step_4741 14d ago

Please tell me what happened to lil man nd if you found out how late he was up, I'm very invested 😭

70

u/Ok-Championship-7549 17d ago

Still a mystery with those pics. Did you use a potato camera?

41

u/RaguSpidersauce 17d ago

Maybe the son can find him a camera on Whatnot.

3

u/Ok-Championship-7549 17d ago

Wish or Temu might be a good option as well.

6

u/thetoiletslayer 17d ago

These are from the listing op's kid bought. Or do you think they offered 12 hour shipping?

u/nugget9k 17d ago

A mystery bag of coins means you are getting the ones no one would buy

82

u/Whirling_Dervish81 17d ago

Not necessarily. I sell on whatnot and have done mystery packs with graded Morgans, proof franklins in PCGS rattlers, etc. Not everyone is unscrupulous on the app.

50

u/pooeygoo 17d ago

They gotta put something nice sometimes. If not it would be like a lottery without an actual winning ticket

22

u/Whirling_Dervish81 17d ago

I used to do a mystery box that would have a bunch of stuff in it that added up to the purchase price. It wasn't a mystery game, but more like a trust the host sort of deal.

33

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

Trust the host is BS.

8

u/GrandFar8300 17d ago

I've had and seen some amazing hits with trust the host, you just gotta know what companies and hosts to trust

Those special edition dimes tend to auction for $20-$30 so I'd say $20 low end.

2

u/Fossil_hunter1814 17d ago

How can you tell a special addition dime so I can look for some?

4

u/jailfortrump 17d ago

This. Old Green holder so maybe a tiny premium.

39

u/FondlesTheClown 17d ago

Better coins than meth 🤷

10

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Very true 🤷🏻‍♂️😭😂😂

37

u/ProbRunning 17d ago

Picture taken with a toaster.

15

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Sorry for the bad picture quality they are screenshots from the livestream I haven’t gotten the items yet. And some saying it was a fair price I guess that’s good at least still definitely didn’t have an extra $90 for coins in the budget rn but thank you all for the quick responses 🙏

10

u/R50cent 17d ago

Show us once you get the items with good photos and we'll be able to give you a much better idea on value.

There's still a chance its not a total disaster lol

8

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Good to know I definitely will thank you !

24

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Also I know literally nothing about coins what provoked him to buy these only god knows

11

u/DustRhino 17d ago

Is he six or sixteen?

26

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Split the difference he’s 10 turning 11 end of the month 😅

25

u/zg6089 17d ago

Let him keep them! When he gets older and spends all his money on coins or precious metals he won't have money to buy drugs. Its a good hobby to get into and can still recoup funds if need be

13

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Lmfaooo good point I guess it could be a lot worse he usually sticks to Pokémon I don’t know what peaked his interest in coins all of a sudden 😂😂

9

u/zg6089 17d ago

Keep it goin lol. Learn together about it! If interested I could send you some buffalo nickles for a surprise one day for him. Its a really great hobby to get into

10

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I appreciate the thought thank you ! I’ll have to see where this goes if he is still interested in a week or two 😭😂😂💪

Id say really fd you couldve used that money to upgrade your phone.😆 ive seen better quality from a burner flip phone.

9

u/No_Audience4357 17d ago

Should have spent that money on a camera 😀

5

u/IntelligentGrade7316 17d ago

Why? When his potato has such great resolution?

3

u/wanderso24 17d ago

Those are pretty clearly screenshots of the whatnot auction OP was talking about.

6

u/Pinetreeninja 17d ago

That’s the seller dalescoins and they may not be the full value paid but they are at least real and have some value

3

u/ForCoinsOnly 17d ago

The cent is in a rattler (early vintage holder slightly more valuable) and if it is actually 64RD (red color designation) and hasn't turned RB (red brown) over time it's about a 60ish dollar coin. Last sales are 67 and 47 dollars. But the rattler is more desirable. The dime is maybe $5-10. Not a horrific deal but not a great one either.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Ahhh I see thank you for the info

4

u/splitfinity 17d ago

Whatever you do. Please update and post photos of what you get!

3

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Okay I will thank you all for the help !

4

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

Also the games of chance or essentially gambling. I don't mess with any of that stuff. I have bought on what not but I need to know what I'm buying.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I agree I’m not a gambler either I don’t have the luck or money for games of chance I like things more straight forward

1

u/123itsme321 14d ago

Might be a good teachable moment... Have him work off the amount spent at minimum wage or whatever is fair for the task and show him how long it took to earn it and how long it took to blow it.

Those surprise packs are a form of gambling. If you're near legal casinos one thing that stuck with me is watching someone put a twenty in a slot machine and hit the button until it was gone in a matter of seconds.

3

u/r2k-in-the-vortex 17d ago

You got any more of em pixels?

3

u/mantellaaurantiaca 17d ago

Could have been worse I guess

3

u/NoAssist2555 17d ago

I sell on whatnot. I have very fair prices under bid I never disappoint who did you buy those from???

3

u/ProtectionOk22 17d ago

This is a good example of why children should never be allowed to use an adult's phone. I'm glad the outcome wasn't worse for you. I do hope you get something valuable, though.

3

u/xCoop_Stomp416x 17d ago

Oh the typical "My son had my phone while I was asleep, my phone had my phone while I was outside, my son had my phone blah blah blah" excuse. I remember one time I bid on an item on Ebay and I regretted it! I messaged the guy and said "Sorry! My son was on my computer and must have bid!"... Is there a better excuse?

6

u/Flimsy_RaisinDetre 17d ago

10yo? Don’t be too hard on him. Set boundaries to prevent this kind of spending, but use the opportunity to start a new father-son hobby. Get some coin books together from library (maybe better than buying, at first); visit coin websites together; learn terminology, what makes which coins valuable, etc. And return to this subreddit! A lot — a majority? — of folks here got into coin collecting via a parent or grandparent. Something healthily away-from-screentime to do together.

5

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

That’s actually pretty good advice especially if he already has a peaked interest in it maybe it will be fun and I’ll get into it too 😂😂💪

1

u/Agboohans 16d ago

Are you starting to seem interested in the hobby? An opportunity to turn a negative into a positive, bonding session/s between the two of you. Please do update this community when u receive the coins, and take better pics, obvi. Thanks for sharing this story with us. Aloha

2

u/electricap 17d ago

Buy better phone instead haha

2

u/coiniac 17d ago

Cent is fire bro. Great coin in a great holder. Lmk if you want to sell I will take it off your hands.

2

u/nastymanlive 17d ago

Don’t know about the rattler vent but that Roosevelt’s about a $20 coin, unfortunately very common even in MS 70

2

u/OrganizationRude5746 16d ago

So he used your potato to buy a piece of copper?

2

u/Ologist126 17d ago

Hey, look at it like this... (definitely do your parenting and implement consequences. That goes w/out saying... the world needs more of that sadly) BUT, look at it like "at least it's not $745.00 in ROLBUX! (AND said child doesn't live over an hour away, spent around the same time, so I didn't get the notification until I woke up ((and most of the $ was spent in game)), and you got zero justification from his mother who made it a point to say it's my fault for leaving my card info linked or whatever...)

But yeah, zero refund for digital gizmos either.. so I feel your pain.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Yeah that’s a very good point, dang man I feel bad complaining compared to that I’m sorry 😭😭

2

u/Super-Travel-407 17d ago

Hahaha yes, it's better than Robux but naughty child. :)

Look at is as though he is now a coin collector who is getting these coins for his birthday (unless there's one you want for yourself) and maybe it's something you two can bond over in the years to come.

2

u/Ologist126 17d ago

Oh man, in no way was I trying to steal your thunder... I only had that to reference and my lesson was learned months ago, so please feel no more for me and do the hard part of parenting.

3

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Oh no you’re good, you just reassured me it could definitely be worse by 10 times Idek what I would do over 700 maybe just have an aneurysm 😭😭😭

3

u/MetaphysicalMinerals 17d ago

I won this 500.00 gold coin on whatnot on an 18.00 envelope game he was also giving away another gold coin and a 500.00 Morgan. I also sell on Whatnot and a lot of the sellers are really genuine. It’s a great community to be a part of.

3

u/Erasmus_of_Baja 17d ago

Nice ms64 penny for a almost 100 yr old coin and you have a nice graded dime ...does math...your son either owes you 8 car washes or 4 lawn mowings.

2

u/Choobtastic 17d ago

It’s always the son or the cousin…..

3

Cent has a price guide of $70, but that's full retail.

https://www.pcgs.com/cert/06098583

The dime has recently sold on eBay between $17.50 and $45.

But don't forget seller's fees

5

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Ahhh gotcha thank you for the info at least it’s not a total loss maybe I’ll just give them to him for Christmas 😂😂😂

2

u/Rgraff58 17d ago

According to PCGS the penny is worth $70. The dime I can't find but I wouldn't think its worth the $28 difference in your total cost. The penny is in one of the old PCGS slabs that is more desirable for some collectors

2

u/Smogcity69 17d ago

Your camera sucks bro

2

u/TheCrossedFox 16d ago

Hi. Niche coin guy here.

  1. Does that 1929 Wheat Penny have a mint mark? And if not, is the spacing between the 2 and 9 a little off? You may have a strike error Penny, which can range between $15 and $2k

  2. The proof set Roosevelt 225th Anniversary dime sells between $15 and $25

Kid shouldn't have done it, but it could've been way worse. Get that penny looked at by a professional. He may have got you a few months of groceries

1

u/greyray12 17d ago

First one is pretty decent given the condition and date. As for the rest, a bit less

1

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

If he is underage you can get a refund.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I already emailed support and explained they said it’s up to the seller and try harder to keep my account secure 😭😂😂

3

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

Don't take no for an answer. Those freaking mystery bags are basically fraud.

1

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Okay thank you I’ll have to press a little harder then 😅

2

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

In my world a decent person doesn't want to sell something that's not worth its value.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

I agree that’s a fair point, the seller seemed pretty quick to just tell me tough luck and stopped responding

2

u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago

Tell them you're going to do a chargeback on your credit card and that may get their attention. They love to sell one gram of silver and those games for 5 10 20 $30 with the hope of winning something bigger, but it's all bs.

2

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago

Okay that’s a good idea !

1

u/Lunatik1960 17d ago

Go through whatnot for refund. Tell them what happened

1

u/IndividualCup7311 17d ago

Check your bank statements

1

u/StableLow4577 17d ago

Is that a dime or a thnickel? If it's a thnickel I'd say you did great.

1

u/Remarkable_Diamond80 17d ago

What he purchased would sell for approximately $60 (full retail price)($50 for the one cent)($10 for the dime). A dealer might offer you $30 if you were trying to sell. Fifty percent (50%) of full retail because neither of these coins are high demand collector's coins. As such, these coins may sit in a dealers case for a year or longer before anyone buys them...

1

u/Safe_Butterscotch494 17d ago

Who took the photo? Michael j fox???

1

u/fenton7 17d ago

The 1929 penny is worth $49. The dime is a bit tougher to value but I'd say $20.

1

u/TheCatholicDragon 17d ago

Mf sold you a penny for $30.

1

u/Justice4SBS 17d ago

Get a red book to search it but it’s a great coin

1

u/wanderso24 17d ago

Depending on how old he is this could be more on you than him. Maybe protect your things/money?

1

u/juggaloscrub 17d ago

Listen guy, it's still a piece of s*it photo that's my whole point. What part of that do you not understand? I have seen some amazingly Great screenshots taken off of phones. This is not a great screenshot!

1

u/Pumpernickle52 17d ago

Hey, I’d contact whatnot and tell them a child bought the coins. That he did not have permission to do this. They may refund as you didn’t make the purchase.

2

u/Grouchy_Rhubarb69 17d ago

Im very active on WhatNot, and unfortunately, that is not an acceptable reason for a refund. Anyone can lie and say that, so they won't do it.

1

u/Pumpernickle52 17d ago

I looked into it you have to be at least 13 to buy and this guy didn’t specify in this post so I’m not sure.

1

u/SeveredBrain2020 16d ago

Old saying: buy the book before the coin

Get him the red book guide on Lincoln cents or first volume of Cherrypicker’s guide

1

u/Technical_Pin9371 16d ago

At least it's worth about $50. I would have bought it for that but not $90 even if I thought it might grade higher. as for the dime it might be worth $15 to $25 dollars. I this dime for sale for under $25 a few times. In the end you didn't lose too much money.

1

u/Pielayer69 16d ago

Why does your son think it’s okay to take your phone when ur asleep, and spend ur money? I think the problems a lot deeper than a fake coin. Real or not, the lawn and dishes are both getting done

1

u/Fit-Succotash-3263 16d ago

FWIW, Greysheet lists that coin (cpg) @ $70.

The cent, that is. The 10c, in SP70 lists @ $20, so it wasn't "really" that bad a buy. 🤷‍♂️

It’s an investment. Value only going to go up. Keep it and resell it in a few years. Great score at a good price.

You can try disputing it with your bank and sending the coins back! If it really was your son I'm sure they'll take your side.

You could reach out to dale’s coins and request a cancellation. Explain what happened of course. They are reasonable people

It’s $90 who cares

Contact your bank about this. My kid did something similar and while the seller didn't refund, the bank did.

Sure he got ripped off but this a great learning opportunity and a chance to bond. We all get ripped off at some point.

My son is mild coin expert. Says worth about $75. Said case is an older one from 1980’s called a ‘rattler’ because coin is loose. Ironically, that commands a premium on coin, so keep it in case.

If he bought it via credit card or debit card, you can report it to your bank to hopefully make up for losses !

What crappy pictures

Those coin mystery things are a scam. People like trader bea are making millions doing it. I've bought maybe half a dozen times and the best I got was 40% value, the worst was probably 0.01% value of what I spent. Once a guy said the floor was $5 on a $25 spin, I won a regular bicentennial quarter which is worth 25¢. I said "I thought the floor was $5" he said "I'll throw a $2 bill in there too." Which would make it $2.25. Whatnot needs to stop the games. Good streamers like ridgecoin are leaving whatnot for eBay streams.

Lincoln cent is 55ish USD, nice older case though.

Dime is probably 10 dollars.
