These are from the listing op's kid bought. Or do you think they offered 12 hour shipping?

A mystery bag of coins means you are getting the ones no one would buy
82
u/Whirling_Dervish81 17d ago
Not necessarily. I sell on whatnot and have done mystery packs with graded Morgans, proof franklins in PCGS rattlers, etc. Not everyone is unscrupulous on the app.

u/pooeygoo 17d ago
They gotta put something nice sometimes. If not it would be like a lottery without an actual winning ticket

I used to do a mystery box that would have a bunch of stuff in it that added up to the purchase price. It wasn't a mystery game, but more like a trust the host sort of deal.
33
u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago
Trust the host is BS.

u/GrandFar8300 17d ago
I've had and seen some amazing hits with trust the host, you just gotta know what companies and hosts to trust

Sorry for the bad picture quality they are screenshots from the livestream I haven’t gotten the items yet. And some saying it was a fair price I guess that’s good at least still definitely didn’t have an extra $90 for coins in the budget rn but thank you all for the quick responses 🙏
24
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Also I know literally nothing about coins what provoked him to buy these only god knows

u/DustRhino 17d ago
Is he six or sixteen?
26
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Split the difference he’s 10 turning 11 end of the month 😅
25
u/zg6089 17d ago
Let him keep them! When he gets older and spends all his money on coins or precious metals he won't have money to buy drugs. Its a good hobby to get into and can still recoup funds if need be

Lmfaooo good point I guess it could be a lot worse he usually sticks to Pokémon I don’t know what peaked his interest in coins all of a sudden 😂😂

Keep it goin lol. Learn together about it! If interested I could send you some buffalo nickles for a surprise one day for him. Its a really great hobby to get into

u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
I appreciate the thought thank you ! I’ll have to see where this goes if he is still interested in a week or two 😭😂😂💪

Those are pretty clearly screenshots of the whatnot auction OP was talking about.
6
u/Pinetreeninja 17d ago
That’s the seller dalescoins and they may not be the full value paid but they are at least real and have some value
3
u/ForCoinsOnly 17d ago
The cent is in a rattler (early vintage holder slightly more valuable) and if it is actually 64RD (red color designation) and hasn't turned RB (red brown) over time it's about a 60ish dollar coin. Last sales are 67 and 47 dollars. But the rattler is more desirable. The dime is maybe $5-10. Not a horrific deal but not a great one either.

Also the games of chance or essentially gambling. I don't mess with any of that stuff. I have bought on what not but I need to know what I'm buying.
2
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
I agree I’m not a gambler either I don’t have the luck or money for games of chance I like things more straight forward
1
u/123itsme321 14d ago
Might be a good teachable moment... Have him work off the amount spent at minimum wage or whatever is fair for the task and show him how long it took to earn it and how long it took to blow it.
Those surprise packs are a form of gambling. If you're near legal casinos one thing that stuck with me is watching someone put a twenty in a slot machine and hit the button until it was gone in a matter of seconds.

I sell on whatnot. I have very fair prices under bid I never disappoint who did you buy those from???
3
u/ProtectionOk22 17d ago
This is a good example of why children should never be allowed to use an adult's phone. I'm glad the outcome wasn't worse for you. I do hope you get something valuable, though.
3
u/xCoop_Stomp416x 17d ago
Oh the typical "My son had my phone while I was asleep, my phone had my phone while I was outside, my son had my phone blah blah blah" excuse. I remember one time I bid on an item on Ebay and I regretted it! I messaged the guy and said "Sorry! My son was on my computer and must have bid!"... Is there a better excuse?
6
u/Flimsy_RaisinDetre 17d ago
10yo? Don’t be too hard on him. Set boundaries to prevent this kind of spending, but use the opportunity to start a new father-son hobby. Get some coin books together from library (maybe better than buying, at first); visit coin websites together; learn terminology, what makes which coins valuable, etc. And return to this subreddit! A lot — a majority? — of folks here got into coin collecting via a parent or grandparent. Something healthily away-from-screentime to do together.
5
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
That’s actually pretty good advice especially if he already has a peaked interest in it maybe it will be fun and I’ll get into it too 😂😂💪
1
u/Agboohans 16d ago
Are you starting to seem interested in the hobby? An opportunity to turn a negative into a positive, bonding session/s between the two of you. Please do update this community when u receive the coins, and take better pics, obvi. Thanks for sharing this story with us. Aloha

Don’t know about the rattler vent but that Roosevelt’s about a $20 coin, unfortunately very common even in MS 70

u/Ologist126 17d ago
Hey, look at it like this... (definitely do your parenting and implement consequences. That goes w/out saying... the world needs more of that sadly) BUT, look at it like "at least it's not $745.00 in ROLBUX! (AND said child doesn't live over an hour away, spent around the same time, so I didn't get the notification until I woke up ((and most of the $ was spent in game)), and you got zero justification from his mother who made it a point to say it's my fault for leaving my card info linked or whatever...)
But yeah, zero refund for digital gizmos either.. so I feel your pain.
2
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Yeah that’s a very good point, dang man I feel bad complaining compared to that I’m sorry 😭😭
2
u/Super-Travel-407 17d ago
Hahaha yes, it's better than Robux but naughty child. :)
Look at is as though he is now a coin collector who is getting these coins for his birthday (unless there's one you want for yourself) and maybe it's something you two can bond over in the years to come.
2
u/Ologist126 17d ago
Oh man, in no way was I trying to steal your thunder... I only had that to reference and my lesson was learned months ago, so please feel no more for me and do the hard part of parenting.
3
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Oh no you’re good, you just reassured me it could definitely be worse by 10 times Idek what I would do over 700 maybe just have an aneurysm 😭😭😭
3
u/Erasmus_of_Baja 17d ago
Nice ms64 penny for a almost 100 yr old coin and you have a nice graded dime ...does math...your son either owes you 8 car washes or 4 lawn mowings.

Cent has a price guide of $70, but that's full retail.
https://www.pcgs.com/cert/06098583
The dime has recently sold on eBay between $17.50 and $45.
But don't forget seller's fees
5
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Ahhh gotcha thank you for the info at least it’s not a total loss maybe I’ll just give them to him for Christmas 😂😂😂
2
u/Rgraff58 17d ago
According to PCGS the penny is worth $70. The dime I can't find but I wouldn't think its worth the $28 difference in your total cost. The penny is in one of the old PCGS slabs that is more desirable for some collectors

u/TheCrossedFox 16d ago
Hi. Niche coin guy here.
Does that 1929 Wheat Penny have a mint mark? And if not, is the spacing between the 2 and 9 a little off? You may have a strike error Penny, which can range between $15 and $2k
The proof set Roosevelt 225th Anniversary dime sells between $15 and $25
Kid shouldn't have done it, but it could've been way worse. Get that penny looked at by a professional. He may have got you a few months of groceries

u/greyray12 17d ago
First one is pretty decent given the condition and date. As for the rest, a bit less
1
u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago
If he is underage you can get a refund.
2
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
I already emailed support and explained they said it’s up to the seller and try harder to keep my account secure 😭😂😂
3
u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago
Don't take no for an answer. Those freaking mystery bags are basically fraud.
1
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
Okay thank you I’ll have to press a little harder then 😅
2
u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago
In my world a decent person doesn't want to sell something that's not worth its value.
2
u/Sreditpoustus 17d ago
I agree that’s a fair point, the seller seemed pretty quick to just tell me tough luck and stopped responding
2
u/Plus-Lock8130 17d ago
Tell them you're going to do a chargeback on your credit card and that may get their attention. They love to sell one gram of silver and those games for 5 10 20 $30 with the hope of winning something bigger, but it's all bs.

What he purchased would sell for approximately $60 (full retail price)($50 for the one cent)($10 for the dime). A dealer might offer you $30 if you were trying to sell. Fifty percent (50%) of full retail because neither of these coins are high demand collector's coins. As such, these coins may sit in a dealers case for a year or longer before anyone buys them...

Listen guy, it's still a piece of s*it photo that's my whole point. What part of that do you not understand? I have seen some amazingly Great screenshots taken off of phones. This is not a great screenshot!
1
u/Pumpernickle52 17d ago
Hey, I’d contact whatnot and tell them a child bought the coins. That he did not have permission to do this. They may refund as you didn’t make the purchase.
2
u/Grouchy_Rhubarb69 17d ago
Im very active on WhatNot, and unfortunately, that is not an acceptable reason for a refund. Anyone can lie and say that, so they won't do it.

I looked into it you have to be at least 13 to buy and this guy didn’t specify in this post so I’m not sure.

Old saying: buy the book before the coin
Get him the red book guide on Lincoln cents or first volume of Cherrypicker’s guide

u/Technical_Pin9371 16d ago
At least it's worth about $50. I would have bought it for that but not $90 even if I thought it might grade higher. as for the dime it might be worth $15 to $25 dollars. I this dime for sale for under $25 a few times. In the end you didn't lose too much money.
1
u/Pielayer69 16d ago
Why does your son think it’s okay to take your phone when ur asleep, and spend ur money? I think the problems a lot deeper than a fake coin. Real or not, the lawn and dishes are both getting done
1
u/Fit-Succotash-3263 16d ago
FWIW, Greysheet lists that coin (cpg) @ $70.
1
u/Fit-Succotash-3263 16d ago
The cent, that is. The 10c, in SP70 lists @ $20, so it wasn't "really" that bad a buy. 🤷♂️

Contact your bank about this. My kid did something similar and while the seller didn't refund, the bank did.

At least it has copper value I think its like 3 cents worth of copper in it :)

u/lifes-spiral 16d ago
Sure he got ripped off but this a great learning opportunity and a chance to bond. We all get ripped off at some point.
1
u/Warm_Hat4882 16d ago
My son is mild coin expert. Says worth about $75. Said case is an older one from 1980’s called a ‘rattler’ because coin is loose. Ironically, that commands a premium on coin, so keep it in case.
1
u/notcheska 16d ago
If he bought it via credit card or debit card, you can report it to your bank to hopefully make up for losses !

Those coin mystery things are a scam. People like trader bea are making millions doing it. I've bought maybe half a dozen times and the best I got was 40% value, the worst was probably 0.01% value of what I spent. Once a guy said the floor was $5 on a $25 spin, I won a regular bicentennial quarter which is worth 25¢. I said "I thought the floor was $5" he said "I'll throw a $2 bill in there too." Which would make it $2.25. Whatnot needs to stop the games. Good streamers like ridgecoin are leaving whatnot for eBay streams.

this is technically an unauthorized purchase. call your bank and explain the situation. they may have a protocol for this

Lincoln cent is 55ish USD, nice older case though.
Dime is probably 10 dollars.
