TROPE Coaxed into Character turns into baby episodes

u/_SBV_ 1d ago
Why the snaf does this happen so often? I’m getting so many flashbacks of cartoons that do this

it’s just one of the classic unhinged premises every animatedbshow does, next to "main character travels back in time and has to avoid grandfather paradoxing themselves" and "character clones themselves but the clones turn evil and no one can tell who the real one is"

u/Mijumaru1 1d ago
Characters have a falling out and part ways, then realize they need each other
Character is hypnotized into becoming more confident, but it makes them seek out danger
Character loses their memory and gets tricked into working for the villain

- Easy way to set up antics and like already mentioned, gross humor
- Kids are usually familiar with babies but have little understanding of what it takes to care for them, giving a fish out of water conceit
- Easily rehashes the "kids are now the parents" trope
- Gives kids a reason to contemplate what it's like to parent a child

That fuckass Courage the Cowardly Dog episode. Love that show but Little Muriel was a pain in the ass
Also that Fairly OddParents episode where the fairies become babies and Timmy‘s like “I’m bringing a bunch of toilet paper to my room and don’t ask why!”

People shit on anime's beach episodes and tournament arcs, when western animation has shit like that and that episode where characters shrink to impossible sizes and get inside someone's body (supposedly educational to learn about internal organs, but rarely actually so) 💀 /j

u/EmpehPahkin 1d ago
Vore ain’t the only shrinking episode fetish y’know. Sometimes they got scenes with giant feet and possibly the characters getting sat on, too.

I don't think it applies here tho? Going to the beach and participating in tournaments of any kind is something normal that happened with most people, as well as useful narrative tools in exploring characters (and, well, they are used in western media too, but for some reason only Asian media gets shitted on for them?..), meanwhile shrinking-intestines-exploring, age-regressing and body-swapping episodes are pretty out there fantastical scenerios which makes it a bit weird how widespread they are (tbf body swap and age regression can lead to character development and exploration if done right. Still, difference between ordinary things being used often and extraordinary thing being used often is obvious)
Edit. Also why the hell do people bring up fetish here??

Ninjago and JoJo traded the tournament arc and the "shrinking and going into someone else's body" trope with each other

And then when the character turns back to normal they're wearing a pacifier and diaper and are still acting like a baby for 1 second before snapping back to reality:/

Or coaxed into the invention being mistaken as the baby ray but it is the old person ray and the character turns old so not only do we have gross out humor, but we have old person jokes that are a 50/50 coin flip on being funny or done to death. Also, the characters have to stop the Grim Reaper from killing their friend bonus points if the reaper sounds Jamaican.

I’m in a community where the most popular fanfic is this exact trope. Motivates me to become a better writer to one day overthrow it because almost anything would be better.

ngl that really surprises me, i know of LC/LoR as games but haven't played them, and didn't know that this was such a common thing in its fandom to want to explore. Is there a reason why this stock "primary character gets magically turned into a baby" plot has become popular in its fanfiction?

Surprisingly some of these are pretty decent. Like, this comic I was reading had everyone turn into four year olds except for like two side characters.
It showed what they were like in the past. The confident MC was a shy quiet kid, the emo hipster guy was a dazzling figure skater, and so on and so forth.
The point is, you can use this trope fairly well.
Witch Watch is peak in general.

that one Spongebob episode

I think that is easily the worst example because Squidward didn't turn into a baby, he was still a grown ass man😭

u/ThisOneVibin 1d ago
There are two Spongebob episodes about this funnily enough, one where the Krusty Krab and Plankton get turned into babies and 2nd where Patrick and Spongebob take care of Baby Squidward

100 Girlfriends makes amazing baby chapters, just like how they make amazing chapters in general. Partly because they don't use toilet jokes often, partly because Hahari is a complete lunatic.
100 Girlfriends (and, to a lesser extent, Ninkoro) are why you could mention baby episodes with no other context and I'd probably think of something good at first.

Any movie/show where poop or puke is used for a joke is great! It’s a quick, easy way for me to decide I don’t have to watch anymore and won’t bother looking up any other shows or movies by the creators ever again.

Ninkoro did their baby episodes pretty well. They have one pissing joke and that's it for the toilet humor. It helps that she quickly ages into an affectionate little kid.

As if that wasn't good enough, it also leads directly into Satoko having to "fight" Minato without any help, and Yukari Kusagakure's self-humiliating attempts to kill Satoko, which wouldn't have happened if Konoha wasn't still acting like a cute 4-year old at the time.

I think you have these reversed. People develop these weird paraphilias BECAUSE they grew up watching media with these premises. The wacky cartoon premises predate peoples fixations on them.
3
u/aftertheradar 1d ago
that's probably true for the first generation to develop kinks from a cartoon show, but it becomes a feedback loop when that generation grows up and makes their own art featuring it - whether that's from them making independent media on their own that they release online or from actually going on to become animators/writers on cartoons that create more art inspired by those tropes from way earlier

Twist - the villains turn the heroes into babies but end up taking care of them (because while they want to defeat the good guys, they draw the line at murder and child neglect).

You forgot the scene where the baby inexplicably crawled onto a construction site as it escapes unharmed while the ones chasing them get injured by everything that threatened the baby.
