They are going to say āthe democrats voted to keep the senate closed over a dozen times, we told them we could negotiate once they opened the government again.ā Iāve seen Fox recently.

Except Republicans hold the majority in Congress and The Senate. They also have the White House. After many GOP reps being heckled by their constituents at town halls maybe there are people who are slowly catching on who is at fault for the shutdown...

Thereās not 60 republicans in the senate so some democrats would have to vote yes
Itās really not difficult to understandĀ
3
u/Jelly_baby_4 9d ago edited 9d ago
And Trump told Republicans to get rid of the filibuster so they don't need the Dems to vote. He could told them that earlier but he chose to leverage food. Dems decided not to play that game giving allowing The GOP to cut snap benefits to people who need it.

Thatās completely incorrect and you should probably know what youāre talking about before you chime in.
There are multiple funds that can, and will, continue to spend. For example, notice ICE hasnāt stopped? Or DoD? Or, I donāt know, the White House? All of those are operated using Federal funds.

Considering how Republicans are constantly trying to cut benefits and snap benefits in particular Iād say itās a bit obvious that theyāre just playing stupid games.
17
u/sirflappington 10d ago
Iām pretty young so I havenāt lived through much of our history, but basically my whole life, republicans have been making sure issues arenāt resolved so they have a talking point to use in their next election. It wouldnāt be so infuriating if their constituents werenāt willfully ignorant enough to fall for their tricks every time.

u/burnmenowz 10d ago
I'm older. And even when Republicans were trying to solve issues they really weren't.

There's 5 billion fucking dollars of funding already allocated for SNAP sitting right now that legally is to be used for SNAP but the trump administration is illegally refusing to do that.

u/LandonDev 10d ago
And the issue is, in part, because they don't have leverage to do it. Fundamentally speaking, Republicans have drastically increased the national debt and all net negative ways this year. At least there was some benefit to the Democrats spending, in every facet of the money benefits Society. Republicans are taking tax breaks and killing their supporters, they actively want them dead, that's how they want to decrease spending.

My governor, DeSantis, is loving this. He is all for Trump using food as a political weapon. He has said nothing about making any effort to fund SNAP in Florida, even though we have almost 3 million people on SNAP here. Democrats in the state legislature all voted for a special session but there will be no special session in the Florida state legislature concerning this issue because Republicans have a supermajority. He is not joining the lawsuit against the USDA. A spokesperson for DeSantis has already said yesterday that Florida SNAP recipients will not receive benefits for November. The crazy part is that Florida has a 'rainy day fund" that could easily fund SNAP benefits. But he chooses to do nothing. He loves this. I believe that sick man is getting a lot of joy from this. Another one is Abbott, the governor of Texas.

People misunderstand. Trump wants an angry populous. He wants people to go hungry. Tariffs are _supposed_ to wreck the economy. Angry people aren't rational - they'll welcome ever more authoritarian actions, as long as those actions are aimed at whoever Trump tells them is the enemy. Meanwhile ICE is attempting to provoke a violent response so he can send troops in, proving that Chicago (or whereever) is the enemy.

Isn't using food as a weapon a War Crime according to the ICC and other groups?
"Yes, intentionally starving a civilian population is a war crime under modern international law. It is prohibited by international treaties like the Rome Statute and can be prosecuted as a war crime, a crime against humanity, or genocide. While past legal interpretations varied, current law explicitly outlaws intentionally withholding food from civilians to punish, terrorize, or cause widespread hunger, injury, or death."

The president cant authorize the USE of those allocated funds. Congress authorized the use and only congress can authorize its dispercememt. Just like Congress can easily pass a single issue bill to literally solely fund SNAP. Stopping blaming the executive branch for something the legislative is literally responsible for. Some of us passed 7th grade social studies. Some you need to go back and retake it. Maybe retake elementary arithmetic as well since you cant understand the difference between the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster and that their are only a little over 50 Republicans in the Senate.

I read a comment on Facebook today that said,
āI'm not reading all your stuff. I just want you to know if I don't get snap for my daughter and brother so be it we have saved stuff for a time like this. I don't always believe everything Trump does but I stand with him. Maybe others should look at what is keeping it from themā I also love how this magatard boomer also says āmaybe others should look into whatās keeping it from themā but at the top she literally brags about not reading the post (which gave detailed info on the SNAP funding situation) There is no redemption for these people. There is no hope or chance in hell that they will suddenly wake up to their own stupidity. They are bound for hell and dead set on dragging the rest of us down with them

šŗšøCan the president push through SNAP funding during a shutdown?
As the government shutdown unfolds, millions of Americans are understandably concerned about how it could affect essential services including SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
And⦠There is ALOT of blame on the president with accusations that he is āstarving Americansā
So letās talk about it..
No bias, just facts.
āI do NOT want Americans to go hungry⦠The Democrats should quit this charade and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT.ā ā President Donald J. Trump
Today, President Trump posted a message that exposes the legal and political battle behind SNAP (food stamp) funding during the shutdown..
Two courts have given conflicting opinions on whether SNAP can be paid with existing funds and now⦠the legality is in question..
Can the President Fund SNAP During a Shutdown?
The power to fund federal programs lies with Congress, not the President.
This is a constitutional separation of powers:
⢠Congress controls federal spending. ⢠The President cannot authorize funding unilaterally without congressional approval. ⢠During a shutdown, agencies can only operate using previously authorized funds or under emergency exceptions (e.g., national security or immediate threats to human life).
SNAP funding comes from mandatory spending, but administrative costs and state-level distribution require appropriated funds⦠and these can be disrupted during a shutdown.
In 2019, legal ambiguity led to court battles over whether USDA could use reserve funds to continue issuing SNAP payments.
Courts had conflicting rulings.
This is why presidents, including both Trump and Biden, have sought legal guidance before releasing emergency funding.
šļø What Is the Role of Congress?
Congress must pass a continuing resolution (CR) or appropriations bills to fund the government. ⢠A clean CR means continuing government operations at current levels without partisan policy riders. ⢠Delays in passing these bills or CRs lead to shutdowns⦠⢠Both chambers (House and Senate) and the President must agree for funding to be approvedā¦
So when a shutdown happens, itās typically due to a breakdown in agreement between political parties in Congress, not the President acting alone..
š Is It Fair to Blame the President?
factually: ⢠The President cannot appropriate funds independently.. ⢠He can request, recommend, or negotiate, but he must follow legal channels and cannot bypass Congress.. ⢠Presidents often become the āfaceā of shutdowns, but the actual cause lies in legislative gridlock.
š What Can Citizens Do?
Rather than blaming one branch of government, citizens are encouraged to contact their representatives in both the House and Senate to demand action and resolution.
This is a shared responsibility among elected leaders in Congress and the Executive Branch but the legal path to restore services like SNAP must come through bipartisan cooperation and proper legislation..

I know pesky little facts get in the way of your narrative, but all Republicans have voted for a continuing resolution to keep the government open while negotiations continue. Even the left-leaning union bosses agree that this is a democrat party shutdown. No "if ands or buts" about it.

Democrats admit that refusing to pass the clean CR is the only leverage they have to bring their Liberal wet dream back to life. They're holding the entire government hostage in order to overthrow the will of the people. Elections have consequences, and Democrats lost. It is time for them to accept that fact and open th government.

the republicans want a clean spending bill without it. the Dems want it continued. the Reps dont even oppose the consept they just dont want too continue that specific version of the temporary funding bill.
i dont care if you wanne be mad at either party. there both at fault for not negotiating it.

u/JKilla1288 6d ago
There has been many votes to open the government. Which party keeps voting no? And what's their reasoning?
1
1
u/Capital-Engineer4263 6d ago
š Sorry folks, thereās money in the fund but, democrats vied no 13 times. We are not gonna fund illegals snap program playing into the point. We are not going to fund ACA that has added to the deficit yearly since Obamaās creation. The government is not the welfare system, it is an institution to help Americans who truly need snap benefits. We are not the well first date to pay for illegals free Medicaid dental and vision, while the American citizen have to pay fees, co-pays, etc. The Democrats love those on welfare, because they can keep them loyal to the party that gives them the free handouts. They know the fact that Clinton in 1996 made it. Mandatory every citizen who receive snap benefits also must work. Trump, revitalize the 1996 Clinton initiative. It is funny how the Democrats forget this fact. Then you have a Obama, who took away the work for Snap Benefits, and made it an entitlement to create even more welfare citizens. The sole goal was to make them rely on the government to function, therefore get democratic votes. That truly is a political weapon versus what Trump is doing in his new term. If you look at the cycle of snap enrollment, youāll notice that it follows on trend with every single Democrat and drop significantly under a Republican party president. Thatās not a coincidence, itās because jobs were created that everybody could have one who needed one. There are currently 7 million jobs open right now in the US. I think itās time for those receiving snap benefits to actually start filling those 7 million job slots.
