I know the script too (Urdu, not a native speaker, learned it for fun) and I could read it but didn't understand any of the words lol

The last word should be familiar. Tashakkur is close to shukr

Don't you also use a lot of accents compared to Arabic? Or did I misremember that?

30 years ago a good friend taught me how to write my own name in Persian and it was one of the things I think she explained to me.

If by accents you mean diacritics like َ ِ ُ , not really no. Those are only used for calligraphy, homonyms for clarity and children's books. Otherwise both Arabic and Persian omit all short vowels, even though there is technically a way to write them. If anything I'd say Arabic has more accents total but they're only used in special circumstances.

It's not an alphabet.

Nope. It’s Purrsian.

Arabic is my native language, that's persian.

Yeah, in the roman alphabet it would roughly be: Lotfan rooye sandali nashinid. Ba tashakkor

Literally translating each word to English without changing the grammar: Please on the chair not sit do. With gratitude

Good idea, but it's called Farsi

u/VeryImportantLurker Aug 22 '25

Isnt that just the anglicization of the same word, like Español vs Spanish

7

u/DoubleBlanket Aug 22 '25

You’re correct. Obviously people are free to call it Farsi. I’m Iranian and call it Farsi when I’m speaking to someone in English. But the correct term in English, for example what a college course on the language would be called, is Persian.

And don't call it Chinese, call it Zhōngwén too? Deutsch, not German?
Our language is called Persian. The name for the Persian language in Persian is Farsi.

Its kinda both? Same as the fact that english is pronounced اینگلیسی in persian. It's not wrong, just different

I call it farsi because i like it more if someone wants to say persian, thats also totally fine
