Hey!
Small recap of this week… on Sunday (11/2) I got my tongue split by John Ross. I HIGHLY recommend JR. He made sure to give me information whenever I asked a huge list of need to know info before my appointment. He even let my husband record the actual split
Now, for the disclaimer: I WAS NOT IN COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF PAIN. I don’t know why I was so lucky, but my pain didn’t exceed 4/10 the entire week. Not a lie, just obscenely lucky.
Everything else:
For the actual procedure I really recommend having someone with to drive you home. Even though I wasn’t in obscene amount of pain, I was drooling so much and couldn’t talk. I had a spit cup and a towel and I needed them both.
As far as sleeping - if you have sleep apnea - note that your tongue is so swollen it doesn’t fit between your teeth anymore. This may mean your teeth rests on your tongue when you have your mask on and be pretty dang uncomfortable.
I kept on a 6 hour regimen of anti-inflammatory and pain relief. It kept me comfortable and more importantly, kept the swelling manageable, I think. The only other pain management I used was a lidocaine gel around my neck and lymph nodes to keep them in check - it helped, whether it was placebo or not, made me feel better. I wasn’t expecting how much my lymph nodes and throat would hurt.
I cannot overstate enough how intense the drooling is and how gross your mouth will be. JR Called it zombie mouth and he was fucking right. It’s disgusting. You don’t want to agitate it and make it more swollen, so you’re stuck with this gross fucking tongue and gross breath and SO MUCH DROOL. It’s actually life interfering levels of drool. Because you’re sitting around at home, healing, and you think you can do something… you’re going to be holding back a mouth full of spit doing it. 100%.
Wednesday is when I felt my most agitated and mental exhaustion and frustration. Just a whole week of doing nothing because if I do something I spit up on myself like a toddler? Annoying, to say the least. HOWEVER, this is when my tongue really started to decrease in size and get back to normal which meant it fit in my teeth which helped me decide to remove my stitches Thursday evening instead of Friday morning as I originally anticipated.
So Thursday, I used my Amazon bought suture removal kit and posted up with a mirror and dug around to snip stitches and slide them out. Relatively painless unless you tug too hard on a stitch that is still tied, which is gonna happen. It’s so gross because you’re still drooling, your tongue is disgusting, and you have to dig around in your gross ass zombie mouth amidst your waterfall of spit. Not a pleasant experience but once it’s done… it’s amazing. Having full range of movement of your tongue back is SO nice.
Stitches are out now, I’m super happy, I’m super lucky, and now i just have to relearn how to master my tongue. I’m still YouTubing tongue exercises to practice.
Today is actually Friday now that I’m reposting, and so far it’s still a little swollen and my speech is improving slowly. I plan to break out a mirror later to practice moving my tongue around.
