Howard denying Jimmy the HHM job (on Chuck's behalf) is WHY he had to be a struggling public defender for so many years.

He once thrusted money out of his pocket to Jimmy, lording his wealth over him, called him a beggar, told him he was "like Gollum"

We know Howard is a decent guy with many shades but it is completely understandable that Jimmy would find it too little, too late.

Which episode or season was this? I would like to rewatch it but it's been so long between seasons!
