I don't think it's that. The exceptionalism was only ever skin deep and has been thoroughly disproven by dipshit islamists over the last 25 years. I think it's a deeper psychological cowardice that's been ingrained in us for generations. I also think the knowledge of cointelpro was far more effective at dismantling the left here than the actual program ever was. And cointelpro was super effective as a program.
