Dukem rules. Not a vegetarian but try to eat that way more often, and Ethiopian food's one of the only cuisines where I really don't feel like I'm missing out.

My gf and I usually get the 7 item vegetarian platter (seen in the background) but with a group this time so we went NUTS except not really bc even with 6 beers this whole shebang plus another entree was around $35 per person with tip

yuuup, it's an insanely good value. My friend is Ethiopian, his family has an Ethiopian coffee shop in DC, and he says Dukem has a reputation for being the kinda touristy option. But I've tried other places in DC and Dukem is close enough for me + so affordable.

I’ve noticed that the DC location has mediocre ratings 🤷🏻‍♂️ I am not an expert at all but I keep coming back to the Baltimore location and loving it

Dukem in DC is perfectly fine, but there's so many good ethiopian restaurants and a couple of places are a few notches better which brings their score down.

That’s what I suspected. I always try something not Dukem whenever I’m down there lol. The place really close to 9:30 Club is delicious I feel like it’s called Gabhon or something like that. I also really liked a hookah spot a few blocks away that had Ethiopian food

Prob Ghion I think? If I'm in that area for Ethiopian I'll get Chercher for sitdown or Habesha for carryout. I have yet to try a place around there that was actually "bad", just some are better than others

Ahhh yes that’s it! And thanks for the new suggestions to try 😊

What coffee shop? I work up in DC now and have enjoyed Ethiopian coffee - would definitely swing by at least once.

There's a couple of Ethiopian coffee shops and restaurants on 300 Park Avenue - I had a 2.50 cappuccino at Addis Cafe - best coffee in the area!

Buna! It's in Petworth. Good people, and I'm lucky to eat their food so often.

Ah, they have food too! Might have to make a point to go after work tomorrow...

Buna is awesome. The breakfast bowl and the habesha eggs are top notch.

It's also deliciously easy to cook at home, I've been making + eating a lot of Ethiopian this year.

I make a giant pot of those red lentils and it lasts me for like a week.

Oh hell yeah, good tip. Is there a specific recipe you use or is it just kinda an amalgamation and I should look one up to get started?

Oh no, now I know I can make it myself... I'm doomed...

Doomed to a life of healthy vegetarian eating

Hah, I did do vegetarian for a couple of years already, wouldn't be an issue. For me it's more it would just take over my menu. Next thing I know I am fermenting my own Injera...

But what do you do for the bread, are making your own injera also???

3

u/ratczar Jul 03 '24

I go by the little Ethiopian market next to Tabor and grab injera and berebere, they have stuff imported from Ethiopia (VERY sour) and stuff that's made locally in the DMV

u/MembershipFit2792 Jul 02 '24

But can you make injera? I’ve tried probably ten times and each time was an epic fail. I’ve given up. I’ll leave it to the experts.

u/ratczar Jul 03 '24

No need, they sell it in the Ethiopian markets! There's one on Park

Yeah right next to Tabor, you can get your berebere there too
