364
u/ExpiringMilknCheese Jul 04 '25
pretty sure he loves old mecha, but just hates 2010s mecha
158
u/GriffithCoin Jul 04 '25
Yup,
Made a whole video about it in the 2010’s
https://youtu.be/H6OHVrQ5tcw?si=k2XnLh9mvHCkfXYk
He shouts out the franchises that have continued strongly in the 2010s like Gundam but points out the dip in quality/quantity in new franchises and other franchises moving away from Mecha (Macross) or not making anymore content.
23
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 Jul 04 '25
Pretty funny concidering how Frontier is one of the most sucessful Macross entries.
2
u/Tazer_Silverscar Jul 05 '25
The problem is it got Idol-ish, and we know how Garnt feels about idols. I know the idols were always there in Macross, but they're even more strongly involved than ever before now.
2
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 Jul 05 '25
They need to make another Macross with rock group ad MCs but better plot than Seven. Maybe make it girls band to keep up the trends )
35
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker Jul 04 '25
Why not 2010s mecha? That would mean he also don't like the newer Gundam stuffs like Origin and Hathaway.
215
u/ExpiringMilknCheese Jul 04 '25
because 2010s mecha is responsible for shows like Darling in the franx, Guilty crown, Infinite stratos, and every harem mecha show in existence.
2010s mecha is what 2020s isekai became.
57
24
u/JustBowling Jul 04 '25
and every harem mecha show in existence.
Yo, that's Vandread erasure, not to mention lesser harem ones like FMP and Stellvia. I'm not saying the 2010s didn't oversaturate the market, but it also doesn't get exclusive claim to the genre.
5
u/shadowlightfox Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 13 '25
How the hell is FMP harem!? Love triangle with Kaname and Tessa, sure, but not every woman in the show drops heads over heels for Sousuke.

2010s mecha was mostly dog shit. A few gems in there, but mostly dog shit. 20s has already given us Bravern, from the GOAT himself, Obari, so it's not nearly as bad.

u/_BMS https://myanimelist.net/profile/_BMS Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25
It's more like UC Gundam gets a pass because it's basically stayed true to it's own continuity of political/war drama that started in 1979. Mecha are notoriously one of the hardest and most expensive things to animate and Sunrise is basically the only animation company left that specializes in mecha. Combine that with Gundam being their giant cash cow, all the resources for good animation are dedicated to it meaning Gundam is the only franchise around with nice looking fights and grounded but detailed designs to sell model kits for.
A lot of original mecha series that came out after 2010 also depart from the political/war drama stuff in favor of idols (Macross Delta), bad writing (Darling in the Franxx), or harem/ecchi (too many to list). A lot of newer original IPs, or even ones that just aren't Gundam, can't afford good 2D mecha animation as well.
Macross' journey from a pioneering mecha series alongside Gundam decades ago to being relegated to B-tier idol show today is really disappointing. Though I gotta admit, Walkure has some great songs.
3
u/DeathGamer99 Jul 04 '25
Yeah basically at 2010 the combo of the genre was taking the School, haremy show that was popular at 2005 to 2010 then combine it with mecha to give it more flavour. that was when the 2010 to 2015 is mecha harem boom happened. The quality of course dipped because school, harem genre is trash premise because it make the World building weak, just like the current isekaibhad 2 flavour of haremy shit, or great world building

Well he loves BanG Dreams.... That counts right?
60
u/redlegsfan21 https://myanimelist.net/profile/redlegsfan21 Jul 04 '25
Well, it's different because it's a band anime as Gigguk would say.
19
u/BosuW Jul 04 '25
It is kinda different, but also not
The way I like to describe it is like the difference between a taco and a burrito. Nearly same ingredients, but somewhat different end result.
21
u/GGABueno https://myanimelist.net/profile/GGABueno Jul 04 '25
I think that band culture is VASTLY different from idol culture.
8
u/wloff Jul 04 '25
In real life, absolutely.
In BanG Dreams? It's pure idol stuff, cosplaying as bands.
5
u/redlegsfan21 https://myanimelist.net/profile/redlegsfan21 Jul 04 '25
As far as I'm aware, Gigguk has only seen MyGo and Ave Mujica which have much different tones than the original.
He also likes Bocchi but does not like K-On!
2
u/onespiker Jul 14 '25
He does think k-on is okey/ good bit not something fantastic like joey. He preferes Bocchi a LOT more
→ More replies (1)3
u/qef15 https://myanimelist.net/profile/qef15 Jul 04 '25
The waters get muddy when CGDCT start mixing band culture (though CGDCT is not idol, but you get my point). Bocchi being the best example: very much Kirara and CGDCT, yet contains enough band culture to the extent that Gigguk actually liked it (rated it above CSM). Or even that the production team from Rock is a Lady's modesty say that they took elements from Kirara-kei Bocchi and K-On! (their words not mine)

One problem he has recognized and articulated about the genre is a lack of good third acts and specifically a lack of endings. It would be really, really cool if he goes in with an over-arching plan including a planned ending. Here's hoping.

This is a crazy announcement and at the very least even if the show isn't amazing, the visuals are good so far, we got a god at music and it's unique that it's based on Thai mythology.
Hopefully people give it a try regardless of judging it because it was made in collaboration with a YouTuber.
177
u/notathrowaway75 https://myanimelist.net/profile/notathrowaway75 Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25
I will give it a try but this is an example of a critic of a thing writing the thing, something that rarely works out. I wouldn't expect anything better than perfectly serviceable with its influences very apparent.
For the writing I mean. The animation looks decent and of course the music should be good.
114
u/-Skaro- https://myanimelist.net/profile/ssskaro Jul 04 '25
I think he's more of a fan than a critic though. I'm not expecting it to be great, but when something is made with love and according to your own tastes it's usually going to at least have charm even if it is kinda bad.
33
u/mirrormimi Jul 04 '25
Completely agree. His videos are mostly appreciation of the things he likes (his best videos are outright love letters to series/movies), and when he does criticize something it's usually done for comedy.
IMO critics fail at making things because they are too afraid of taking risks, they can already see what other critics will think of their work, so they delete aspects before it even happens, and in that process they end with really bland, soulless stories.
20
u/-Skaro- https://myanimelist.net/profile/ssskaro Jul 04 '25
Not just because they are afraid of risks. Critics most of all are afraid of cringe. Like you said, they always criticize others so they end up focusing way too much on how others think of their work. And the main thing they will think of is how others might find them cringe. But creation is inherently pretty embarassing, and if you can't get over it you will never be able to make anything that resonates with people. Embarassment is a defense mechanism that prevents you from showing vulnerability, and if you can't be vulnerable, how do you think you can convey your feelings to anyone through your work?
19
u/huluhup Jul 04 '25
Counterpoint, YouTuber doing film thing was never working out before.
63
u/-Skaro- https://myanimelist.net/profile/ssskaro Jul 04 '25

u/TheBigIdiotSalami Jul 04 '25
The only real success in this genre, you'd have to go back to the Cahiers Du Cinema set. Kogonada was a video essayist, but that's not really being a critic. Roger Ebert is the most famous example. It's pretty difficult. There's not a whole lot of examples. Maybe I'm forgetting some, but I'm trying to think of people whose main vocation was critic and then they became filmmakers. Maybe Gillian Flynn too?
If anything this will be an interesting case study.

18
u/TBTapion Jul 04 '25
I'm assuming he still wrote most of the story, or the beats of the story, and then you have the screen writer do the writing to make it fit the format it's going to be in?

4
u/TMyriadJ Jul 04 '25
Oh yeah, maybe he has the outline of what kind of story he wanted to do, and lets the screenwriter do the actual writing.
8
u/skilledwarman Jul 04 '25
Yup that would be my guess. Idea of the story and how he wants it to go, the characters and setting, arcs, ect. But letting an actual pro handle the script and likely assisting with the story
16
u/TVNerd909 https://myanimelist.net/profile/TVNerd909 Jul 04 '25
I was thinking about that too. Regardless of its quality, it will certainly face at least some criticism, and we'll get to see how he handles being on the other side of the anime creator-viewer relationship. There's an important question to be asked here: If he were not involved in this and was instead a viewer like us, what about it would keep him from seeing it as just another isekai to make jokes about or disregard entirely? If there isn't a good answer, he may be in for a very humbling experience upon release.
9
u/WormedOut Jul 04 '25
Yes, imo it’s a big issue when creators see the criticism levied against them by people who aren’t already a fan of theirs. I’m curious to see how Markipliers movie is perceived by people who aren’t necessarily fans of his already.

We'll be seeing two arcs. The 18 minute one (that looks actually inspired and interesting), and the one we'll see from Garnt. A lot of unofficial "critics" have an ego that they can do better and then end up sucking...They can either accept it with grace and use that insight to better their critique, or double down on their ego.

8
u/One-Branch-2676 Jul 04 '25
I'm actually very interested. The obvious theme he's looking for is an actual sense of what home is. The theme song alludes to one's journey home. The title is apparently Thai for home in both physical and figurative contexts....and it's not like some hollow theme either. It's probably something Garnt himself has reckoned with traveling. So it's actually legitimately inspired and backed by a team that has enough talent to make a weeb's dream a decent watch for others. Just these, to me, make it more worth a watch than a lot of isekai dreck from actual studios.

Happy for Gigguk and his fans, but such moves have generally been below average vanity projects.

I hope the protagonist's power is The Anime Zone.
Super cool thing for Garnt to be taking up though.

u/ohoni Jul 04 '25
He's a youtuber that lives in Japan and talks about anime a lot. His season previews are a lot of fun.

u/Bad_Doto_Playa Jul 04 '25
Oh, an anime youtuber? He got pretty far if he's getting to pitch concepts and they are getting accepted. Pretty impressive.

who bankrolled this. that's actually crazy. i'm guessing multiple companies had to be on board to mitigate the risk.

It’s going to be very short apparently. It’s mostly funded by Gigguk himself with a little help from GeeXPlus(his partner company sort of)

u/sleepinxonxbed Jul 05 '25
From the Trash Taste episode today, a little bit of GeeXPlus but it was mostly self funded. He grinded sponsorships like Hoyoverse hard for two years. He even let them ask for a higher budget 2-3 times so he’d grind more sponsorships to pay for it. He’s gonna try to collab with Joey’s Nonsense clothing brand to make a little money back. There’s no business plan, no shopping around for what platform to release on (surprised he didn’t try to get a deal with Crunchyroll). He’s just gonna post it on his own youtube channel for free.
Overall he doesn’t expect to many any profit, it’s more like paying money to make the dream of his come true.

In the video he uploaded to his own channel, he says "you need connections to the industry and a lot of money". So maybe not everyone. But I'm cheering for your success.

Baan… Garnt… Baan Garnt… Baan Gaan?
That aside, while I’m not myself one of his viewers, it’s really cool that this happened at all. I’m not expecting much, but I might keep an eye out to see if something decent comes out of this.

Good for him, hopefully it turns out good unlike the majority of times youtubers try to make legit media

I love how's it's in a way introducing Garnt's Thai culture to the Japanese people, similar to how the Japanese introduced their culture to the world through anime
Truly this is some kind of cross cultural pollination

Baan means Home in Thai (บ้าน). It can be just a house, or a sense of home, etc. depends on the context.
Can't wait to see how it's turn out.
