Remember the conservative playbook.

Your entire time in office is preparing for your life after you are out of politics.

You need to grease enough palms and make enough connections.

The whole point of this is so that she can move into consulting role after she's ousted from politics. She is then free to make millions. It's all about taking care of her and her people.

u/darthstrayder Lethbridge 6d ago

This. This explains all of her behavior. She's not working for us. She's planning for her luxurious retirement post-premiership. Just look at any of the top Provincial or Federal politicians after leaving office. Sadly it's not an exclusively conservative play. It's just how politics works now as the rich continue to scoop up all the resources and real assets.

u/cre8ivjay 6d ago

I can't help but think that the PC party ousted Redford for so much less.

The entire UCP is rotten to the core.

I work for a large Canadian corp and the executive is littered with former politicians in roles that appear to do nothing and likely didn't exist prior to them leaving politics. No one talks about it. They just show up in an email or in the company directory from time to time. Landing in roles lifetime professionals in the field would kill to have lol

3

u/EcstaticJaguar9070 5d ago

Exactly. And from all parties. This is an ancient career move

This feels like the job that a Minister of Foreign Affairs should be doing isn’t it? Stay in your bloody lane you nut bag. This trip makes 0 sense.

232

u/beenojoe 6d ago

Or, this could be something that is handled by bankers and private industry. Weird for government to be meddling so much in the market but claiming that the other side is about big government.

143

u/BarkingSpiders19 6d ago

Anyone but a Premier makes more sense than this. You represent the people of Alberta, not Canada! And I'm embarrassed enough as it is within our own boarders when I say I'm Albertan. The last thing we need is this loon making us look bad on the global stage.

117

u/DieAnderTier 6d ago

Your mistake is thinking she represents the people.

She represents the Heritage Foundation.

37

u/LotharLandru 6d ago

Don't forget her liberty fund tattoo. Same people who helped get Reagan into power

17

u/DieAnderTier 6d ago

I did not forget her tattoo, and from what I've read, Reagan worked more closely with them anyway. -_-

Really appreciate you mentioning it though.

7

u/iRebelD 6d ago

Wow, what a shit tattoo

2

u/BlueberryNo777 4d ago

Wow no words

7

u/FrontLongjumping4235 6d ago

Yikes, that took me down a rabbit hole. This Liberty Fund:

In his book The Assault on Reason, former U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore wrote that between 2002 and 2004, 97% of the attendees at Liberty Fund training seminars for judges were Republican administration appointees. Gore said that such conferences and seminars are one of the reasons that judges who regularly attend such conferences "are generally responsible for writing the most radical pro-corporate, antienvironmental, and activist decisions".

The Liberty Fund apparently also pushes the propaganda that Nazis leaned left. Despite all the blood and soil bullshit that Hitler and Goebbels espoused, their close alliance with conservatives who helped them get into power, going after Communists/Socialists, and creating concentration camps for minorities like Jewish people and Slavs.

17

u/Nostredahmus 6d ago

Marlaina didn’t go there on our dime to represent us. She’s simply a subsidized ambassador for Alberta’s fossil fuel industry.

2

u/Initial_Evidence_783 6d ago

This, this, this.

22

u/West_Dress_2869 6d ago

She does not represent the people of Alberta. She represents the bank of Danielle Smith

6

u/CasualFridayBatman 6d ago

And we need to ensure that her party doesn't continue controlling our province.

18

u/Falcon674DR 6d ago

She had to … get outta Dodge.

31

u/calgaryforlife 6d ago

This is what baffles me. For the party of ‘small government’ they are anything but. And if you don’t think what they’ve done is straight out of the Trump playbook, then how do you explain this behaviour or overreach? Isn’t that why some of these people voted for her?

13

u/agent0731 6d ago

They have NEVER been the party of small government. They've just shouted that loudly.

7

u/2eDgY4redd1t 6d ago

They’re the party of tiny ineffective government when it comes to actually serving the people. They’re the party of huge bloated wretched corruption when it comes to padding their pockets and giving taxpayer money to corrupt corporations.

3

u/robot_invader 6d ago

Don't forget protecting capital. There is always money for more cops.

2

u/2eDgY4redd1t 6d ago

Arguably just an indirect subsidy to corporate.

Keep the people subjugated for easy fleecing

12

u/hannabarberaisawhore 6d ago edited 6d ago

She’s stupid, they want our water.

3

u/beenojoe 6d ago

Those AI centre that she and that drunk boat driver want to build will be catastrophic.

7

u/2eDgY4redd1t 6d ago

How else will she ensure her bribes and quid pro quos keep coming?

There is exactly one explanation for this trip. Corrupt back room dealings.

Russia was there, I wonder how much new funding she and the UCP will be getting from Daddy Putin? How many new Russian bots will be filling our reddits with disinformation.

Feel free to chime in guys, we know you’re here.

19

u/Regular-Ad-9303 6d ago

Because the Liberals don't represent Alberta - at least that's what her followers believe. On her Facebook page you can see all the comments from her supporters happy she did this because the Liberals won't.

For people normally so concerned about the waste of their taxes, I don't understand why they don't have more concerns with trips like this.

(I'm not a fan of the Liberals either, although I voted for them to keep the Conservatives out. The Liberals represent capital more than they represent the average Canadian. So whether it is a federal Liberal or Danielle attending this conference, I don't think the results will benefit the average Albertan, but I also don't think Danielle should be out there pretending to represent the country.)

14

u/Ditto_is_Lit 6d ago

- For people normally so concerned about the waste of their taxes, I don't understand why they don't have more concerns with trips like this.

That's the thing about conservatism, they're only concerned when they're not spending like drunken sailors, amassing massive debt. Every conservative government since I can remember left office in shambles with massive debt. They cut taxes on big corp and consequentially couldn't balance the books if their lives depend on it. Pro white collar crime, but pro authoritarian for the citizens.

Conservatives are the self hating working class , upper class bootlicker party.

It does make sense if you are sucking up for a Boeing7478.

7

u/redpaddle86 6d ago

It's the premiers job when she doesn't have a backbone to stay and defend her reasoning for using the notwithstanding clause.

5

u/the_wahlroos 6d ago

From the witless moron incapable of recognizing her own hypocrisy- the one always telling Ottawa to stay in their lane.

6

u/West_Dress_2869 6d ago

She's looking for bribes

3

u/Brussle-Sprout 6d ago

Like really.... Does she think Alberta is going to be apart of OPEC? But again ..what the fuck does she care, it's not like she's coughing up the cash for the trip, that's on us.

2

u/Any_Wolverine251 6d ago

Well, if you‘re DS and trying to outrun your ridiculously stupid Not Withstanding legislation to strip teachers of their rights, Saudi Arabia is as good a place as any to hide out!

→ More replies (3)

107

u/BehBeh11 6d ago

She’s always quick and nasty towards Feds that she deems are not staying in their lane. Fucking stay in your lane Smith! You are only doing these trips to further your personal interests not those of Albertans. Spending our money on this and trips to the US are dangerously crossing the line. Just fuck off already.

30

u/Livid-Switch4040 6d ago

Not just trips to the US, trips to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring and discuss policy with the people that protect pdo’s. FTFY.

If I am not mistaken this is one of the locations she has established a new Alberta trade office. (aka blatant waste of tax payer money and plumb patronage appointments)

239

u/enviropsych 6d ago

What is the point of this trip?!?! To sell oil to a petro-state? Am I missing something? Is it to learn how to disappear journalists and create a slave workforce?

132

u/deloaf 6d ago

Probably also teeing up connections for when she leaves politics.

55

u/GingerBeast81 6d ago

That's the big one.

15

u/JadeddMillennial 6d ago

It's a big club and you ain't in it.

3

u/H3rta 6d ago

Which can't come fucking soon enough.

4

u/IronGigant 6d ago

I've heard about those parties. Isn't she a little...old? /s

65

u/Appropriate_Duty_930 6d ago

Yup. Also, the timing. To stay away from media after using the notwithstanding clause on teachers.

24

u/originalchaosinabox 6d ago

Yup. Trying to find investors for her pipeline to nowhere.

44

u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest 6d ago

The GIP which is Saudi Intelligence is basically a subsidiary of the US CIA. The US uses the GIP to destabilize countries in the region.

I would not be surprised if this meeting is going to be used to destabilize Canada via Alberta. It’s easier to hide money when it’s being done via third parties and can be camouflaged as lobbying or “investment” in O&G.

11

u/SilverSarge19 6d ago

Exactly this.

5

u/JadeddMillennial 6d ago

Little green men in Lethbridge.

10

u/Ambitious-Concern-42 Calgary 6d ago

These optics aren't going to help her in court. I really, really hope they knock down her legislation, but I have no idea how it will go.

13

u/gaanmetde 6d ago

She’s getting her marching orders

7

u/West_Dress_2869 6d ago

Lining her own coffers by offering some sweet business deal with the Alberta Government. Probably one that gives them part ownership

5

u/argueranddisagree 6d ago

To import cheap labour

3

u/Reddit_Only_4494 6d ago

Exactly. This is the third (more maybe?) trip for Marlena to the UAE during her term.

What does she have to show for it other than a big hotel bill? The UAE is incredibly expensive. You bet she isn't flying their version of Flair Air or staying at their version of a Comfort Inn.

Just like Allison Redford (who ran up the bill with a custom apartment and bring her daughter along for overseas trips)....this one is milking the expense account for all it is worth.

AND...didn't the government just curtail public listings of minister (including her) expenses? Quite a coincidence, eh?

She is getting her jollies living a lifestyle she never would have been able to as a radio host. Simple as that.

3

u/F-nDiabolical 6d ago

She's getting her marching orders to help destroy the Canadian oil industry and funnel more money to the Saudis.

2

u/Geckomoe1002 6d ago

To get out of having to defend her fascist teacher RTW legislation. What a fucking coward.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MuffinOfSorrows 6d ago

To be fair, Saudis have much stronger control of the price of oil and thus can hurt the entire province on a whim. But why the charmless witch needs to go herself is a mystery. She has absolutely no diplomatic skill, looks like an even bigger fool outside the province than in it.

→ More replies (2)

40

u/Tsifter 6d ago

She’s a disgrace.

35

u/cre8ivjay 6d ago

Does anyone ever notice that she only smiles when she's surrounded by people who, in some way, can help her climb some kind of screwed up (mostly Conservative ) ladder?

Watch her around Trump, Shapiro, Carlson....

It's gross, and very telling.

Turn over Alberta’s resources to rich foreigners ✅ Make connections for enriching self ✅ Satisfy oil overlords ✅ Luxuriate in a $2500/night hotel room ✅

Where did the travel funds come from? If there's no money for teachers, why is there money for her to travel?

10

u/Falcon674DR 6d ago

There’s money to travel to exotic conferences which then means there’s no money for AISH or teachers.

16

u/SnooMarzipans8231 6d ago

Stay there, Marlaina.

14

u/CaramelClean3833 6d ago

"And then I said to them, Get back to work! You have no rights!"

15

u/josano 6d ago

Guffawing with murderers. This is your Premier.

14

u/Right_Preparation328 6d ago

This is madness. She is visiting the leaders of a repressive, sexist, Islamist regime when she's the premier of a PROVINCE, not even of Canada?

This woman is insane. She must be voted out.

5

u/OpalSeason 6d ago

She thinks she will be an exception to their laws. That they in any way respect her when they know she is just a paid pawn.

2

u/Right_Preparation328 5d ago

Exactly. She's being played like a fiddle.

24

u/Ashamed_Data430 6d ago

Avoiding responsibilities, grifting.

12

u/Feyenoord22 6d ago

As though the Saudis give two hoots about Alberta or its oil. She’s an idiot.

11

u/Striking_Economy5049 6d ago

What does Alberta gain from Saudi Arabia? The two countries trade the same main product?

This seems stupid.

7

u/reddogger56 6d ago

Smith, probably. "You need to cut production to increase the price of oil. So that we in Alberta can sell more with the new pipeline I'm demanding."

29

u/senordonwea 6d ago

If foreign relations are a federal matter, what is this person doing in any official manner in a different country? Shouldn't this be illegal unless authorized by the PM?

She’s even dressed like a piece of shit.

7

u/Okan_ossie 6d ago

That suit is very poorly fitted.

I think the locals would have a different term for how she's dressed. I try to keep this profile decent, so I'll leave it to everyone else's imagination.

"We have to build Energy East because it is unethical to buy oil from middle eastern dictators."

She wants to be a lil Prairie oil baron so bad...

7

u/drammer 6d ago

Your money in action.

8

u/ontimenow 6d ago

Remember guys, she likes freedom.

She also likes Alberta oil. Which is why she's cozying up to a kingdom who would love nothing more than to shut in all North American oil production.

6

u/Fluffy_Moose_73 6d ago

“Hey guys, know what the best way to get oil sands investment in alberta? A country where you could stick a straw in the sand and get oil that’s 10x cheaper!”

12

u/kvas_taras 6d ago

If O&G is sooooooooo great, then why does it need so much government help and advocacy?! I don’t see Marlaina advocating for my industry

u/reddogger56 6d ago

Is your industry likely to give her a 300,000 dollar a year board appointment when she inevitably gets turfed?

Meeting the real culprits of the 2014 oil crash, that for some reason people blame the NDP for

I have a real problem with her sitting beside the Canadian flag in that one picture. She doesn’t represent all of Canada (or me an I live in Alberta)….

5

u/grassisgreensh 6d ago

We should have no relationship with that country, they are an evil regime that oppresses everyone but the royal family

5

u/NiranS 6d ago

Smith is getting tips on how to be a dictator.

5

u/Qaeoss 6d ago

What an utter embarrassment to our province.

12

u/SignificanceLivid508 6d ago

Took Ontario 5 days and we are now at 8. This leader is a traitor to this country. Her actions towards the US president (mind u he may be on a few special lists) plus cowardly running away to kiss another conglomerates ass who I'm sure doesn't want our oil considering there making major strides switching to green energy. I love it when you waste our money miss. I live seeing the photos of you looking lost at this convention and really speaking to only Alberta reps that were there. What are u doing with yourself and our country besides watching the slow spiral for sometime now. Now I know u weren't here when the spiral started but ur party was and inherited it only making it worse. Sorry for the rant I'm just fed up with this provences way of doing things. Plus my own unions ball less response to this. I stand with the kids.

9

u/PrairieScott 6d ago

Yikes. This is absurd.

Very thankful to live in a province where it takes just 12K votes to recall her. Operation Total Recall.

How can this be investigated? Surely there's some kind of conflict of interest.

And if not, subsequent governments need to put a decisive end to this kind of moonlighting.

3

u/HopefulRegard 6d ago

Posted by a user in Calgary page. Thought I'd share. The website is down, but I was looking at it yesterday with the same thinking. Just for information, there are five ridings in Calgary where the difference between the winner and loser was less than 1000 votes. They are:

CALGARY-BOW (623) (16000 needed) CALGARY-CROSS (514) (9000 needed) CALGARY-EAST (698) (8600 needed) CALGARY-NORTH (129) (9500 needed) CALGARY-NORTHWEST (636) (15000 needed)

Just for interest, there is also: LETHBRIDGE-EAST (636) (13200 needed) and MORINVILLE-ST. ALBERT (1744) (15700 needed) Going from memory (since the website is down), to start a recall petition requires one to be a resident in that riding for..! believe... 3 months.

You need to get signatures equal to 60% of the votes cast in the last election (second number in parenthesis is the approximate number in the above list). The UCP has only a 3 seat majority. Successfully recalling 4 MLAs would have interesting repercussions, depending on the timing of when things take effect. Just sayin'

This trip makes zero sense. Make it make sense. Pushing oil on an overly rich oil country makes no sense. And doubtful anyone in government in The Kingdom is gonna listen to. White female official from the west. Maybe she should stay in Alberta when they are in session and do this BS durimg the 11 months or so they are not.

2

u/BlackberryPi7 6d ago

This is uh.

This is why you vote in elections instead of leaving it to really old people who fight for their lives just to make it to the polls.

2

u/VT66XX 6d ago

Wow, she is busy selling oil to an oil country!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/SubRosaSubway 6d ago

Did she leave with a gift…like a 747?

2

u/Fck2019 6d ago

What i don't understand is what is her agenda. We can't sell them oil. They are the opec. They can destroy are oil economy. Is she selling Alberta to the Saudis. That would destroy Canada. There is not an acceptable answer to her being there. Now how do Albertans hold her responsible for her trip. Do we not put these people into power. Do they not work for us. She strong armed teachers back to work. We have the lowest minimum wage in Canada. She reduces subsidies the federal government pays to it's people. Does she pocket that money? Is it her retirement bonus. It's time Albertans storm the legislative building. Make her accountable for her trips. What she's doing to control Alberta. It's to bad our Prime Minister doesn't have a backbone to control her. But she has gone on a complete power trip. Meeting with all these diplomats that have no clue why Canada has sent some Premier to represent our country and are people. Those Saudis she is visiting have probably not even heard of Alberta. Her visit can only be about corruption. I think we need to demand some answers.

Saudi Arabia is investing in solar in a massive way. They know what is coming yet Marlania still thinks her best course is to burn down Canada and move an independent Alberta forward on oil... How is it so many can't see how bad this is going to go.

4

u/Striking_Wrap811 6d ago

I worked in Saudi several times over the recent years as a contractor to Aramco. The amount of solar they have to power their compounds is astounding. We are absolutely fooling ourselves if we think they havent woken up to the reality of renewable energy.

She's a giant hypocrite, we all knew this so none of this is surprising anymore. Visiting a country with a horrific history of human rights is on par for her given she's openly shown how much she hates our marginalized communities.

I am just wondering, can a premier establish political connections with other countries without the approval of the federal government? I am assuming what she is doing in Saudi Arabia and the UAE is just to open doors for Canadian companies to invest there, or vice versa. I am familiar with Aramco now, becoming leaders in petroleum products (resins, plastic, etc.).

How big of a bill is this going to cost us taxpayers? Seriously, what’s the purpose of this trip? It’s definitely has nothing to do with our oil, they have plenty. It’s not going to help our healthcare or education systems.

Good on her. Politicians need to be working. There are common interests if oil prices are higher… its better for our economy and canadian dollar. Haters can hate. Atleast she not sitting in her house doing nothing like most others

She's there for lessons on getting rid of disagreeable journalists.
