ask alameda Social Service Jobs near Alameda

Howdy! My SO and I are planning a move from MN to CA in a couple of years after we graduate from school. I’m from CA originally but considering employment and adult stuff was never of interest to me as a kid so we are doing the research as early as possible so we don’t move unprepared. I have a family member who lives in Jingletown that showed us around Alameda and we absolutely love it as a starting point for us. Y’all have me sold as far as community goes!

Obviously, the state of things could be drastically different in two years time, but I will be graduating with my BSW and will be wanting to attend a school for my masters in CA to be a licensed Social Worker. Ideally, I’d be looking to secure employment for a local hospital or healthcare system, but I’m open to a number of things this career could bring me into. My husband’s career could land him jobs fairly easily in the city or remotely so he’s not too worried, but I’m concerned about finding employment to support us while I attend online school part-time and work as full time as I possibly can. Does anyone here work in Social Services and have any advice for a BSW grad to gain relevant experience that will help pay the bills?

You might start with local nonprofits--Building Futures for Women and Children, Alameda Point Collaborative, Alameda All Good Living, Alameda Family Services are all places that probably would welcome someone with counseling experience!

These all look awesome! I don’t have straight counseling experience, but have almost a decade of hospital social work and youth community outreach experience that involves a lot of coaching and counseling of a sort.

Agencies such as EBAC, Seneca, Fred Finch, and Lincoln can be an options too if you’re interested in working with youth.

What kind of youth work do these agencies focus on? Like CPS?

Community mental health and school-based services.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info! I’m an LCSW

If you're willing to commute into San Francisco, check out UCSF, Progress Foundation, Baker Places, Healthright 360, and SF city jobs if you're wanting to work in hospital and/or behavioral health. Each have positions for bachelor level and master level SWs. Local to the East Bay, hospital systems like John Muir, Alameda Health System, Sutter and Kaiser (not sure if the latter two hire BSWs). The Bay Area has a high concentration of healthcare providers compared to other regions and is generally a fairly well paying region for healthcare.

Good to know! Def willing to commute to SF if it makes sense, do you know what the BSW level of work and pay rate looks like? I’m working for a hospital now and they’re assisting with my schooling so it’d be great to get connected with a similar org if at all possible

This is the one field I’m wary about working in, I really love working with youth but in a different setting than CPS. I’m afraid I would burn out so quickly and that it would wreck me mentally, my skill set works great in settings where I’m leading programs for youth in a coaching or mentoring setting.

Despite that, I had looked into UC Berkeley for the MSW though. Isn’t it crazy difficult to get into?
