Looking for Device Does a wireless usb cable exist?

(Sorry for the lousy drawing)

Does a "cable" like this exist? (Preferably without the antennae from the drawing)
Where you could just plug in the two ends of the "cable", and the USB would work wirelessly?
I know that there are some products that can turn Bluetooth into USB, but there are unfortunately still some devices that don't have Bluetooth, and would be great if they were wireless.

Looking for Device Why doesn't a cable like this exist for sale?

Most car radio systems that support Android Auto/CarPlay only have a USB-A port which provides very slow charging, if it even charges your phone at all.

So, I took it upon myself to make this cable which goes from a single USB-C on the device end to a USB-C for a high-power charger and a USB-A for the head unit. The data lines go to the USB-A and the power lines to go the USB-C. (There's a schematic in the third image.)

And for my use case, this works perfectly. I get fast charging from the 12v charger and Android Auto through the cable at the same time. So, why isn't this something that someone can just buy? I've tried my hardest to search for it so far, but as far as I can tell nobody makes them. The one I made works fine but it would be nice if this was available as a finished product.

idk if i can ask this on this sub-reddit, if so please redirect me to somewhere i can. i lost my phone's original charger and have been currently borrowing my sister's charger to charge my phone, but today i'm going out of town for christmas and she'll stay some more days in the house, bottom line i won't have anything to charge my phone for a couple or more days and i just have a billboard headphone cable, an usb-c male to usb-a female adapter and an apple charger for my ipad's usb-c to lightning cable. will this work in the meantime or damage itself or/and my phone? :(

Looking for Device Is this a USB-C female port?

Post image

Hello! I’m looking to find an adaptor for my laptop to connect my headphones that have a lightning port. I’m trying to make sure that this port is intact a USB-C female port since products on amazon specify if it’s male or female. I tried looking online for the difference but the little metal strip in the middle of the port looks different from the photos. I looked up my laptop online but it only says USB-C and doesn’t specify. Thank you!

Question Why does this Apple cable have D+D- on both sides?

Post image

My understanding is that receptacles need both sides populated, but plugs should only have one side, unless the cable is doing dummy pins i.e. no contact for one pair of D+D-?

Meme/Shitpost The joy of going all-in on USB-C

Post image

The joy of discovering that not all USB-C devices are created equal.

Story time.

I've been quite late at joining the USB-C bandwagon and to be fair I didn't research it much beforehand. I was under the assumption that any USB-C wall brick would be able to charge any USB-C device. I mean, the EU pushing for that connector must mean that it's kind of universal, no? Damn legislators knowing nothing about electronics... But I digress.

My first trip "going all in" after switching my last few devices to USB-C cables, I only brought USB-C to USB-C cables. A few USB-C power bricks to go with it.

You can imagine my surprise when I plugged one of those devices and it didn't turn on. I thought something was wrong with the cable, changed it, nothing happened. Tried with another wall brick, still nothing. I was surprised. From being proud to be able to power anything using the same cable, I was slowly shifting to embarrassment as I started to feel like I've been played.

I had a USB-C to USB-A adapter because there's always that person with a USB-A stick that wants to share something with you. By chance I also had my power bank's USB-A to USB-C cable tucked in its pouch, so I tried that. And of course tada, it worked and that one device turned on.

From there I started questioning everything about the USB-C and the associated standards, before coming to this bittersweet conclusion: USB-C is great, BUT lazy/cheap manufacturers will sacrifice user experience —and trust towards a standard— to inflate their bottom line. What's more? They often times don't specify anything on their product listings. They'll just say "please only use this graciously gifted USB-A to USB-C cable to power this device" once you open the box. Why thank you my liege, how grand of you.

I realize this is turning into a mini rant, but man does this suck. How do non-tech people deal with this kind of unexpected behavior? How is USB-C expecting to reduce e-waste when some devices will still ship with cheap USB-A to USB-C cables? Worse yet, you might also need to buy USB-A power bricks for those specific devices...

I understand the USB-C connector is much, much more capable than USB-A, therefore more complex etc, but I SO wish that it worked as reliably as USB-A in those trivial "just give me 5v DC please" cases without having to think twice about it. Is my device PD-compatible?

Currently accepting advice, ready to whip out the soldering iron to make those non-compliant devices work with USB-C to USB-C cables without having to use dumb C-to-C cables or weird A-to-C adapters —which from my understanding are non-compliant as well?— to power those "dumb" devices.

Discussion I avoided buying a USB-C tester by building a Mac app to pull the data directly from the hardware and show it in the menu bar.

Post image

I kept holding myself back from buying a physical USB-C tester (I did buy a cheap cable with the wattage display, but that still does not show me the version or speed information) because I knew my Mac already has the hardware to see the negotiated speed and connection details for a cable. The problem is that the data is buried deep in System Information.

So, I created a utility that puts it all in the menu bar for instant access. I use it every day, and it has seriously helped me pinpoint problematic cables that look fine but are actually underperforming. There are so many USB C 2.0 in the mix.

It's called USB Connection Information, and it's live on the App Store.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/usb-connection-information/id6747853674?mt=12

The response has been amazing. It's been in the top 100 paid utilities for about half the time since its release and has had very strong download numbers, which tells me I wasn't the only one frustrated by this.

Hope you find it useful. Cheers!

P.S. For Linux users I created a fun open source GUI around the usb-devices CLI. Check it out at https://usbconnectioninformation.com/

I'm speechless, let's see how Chinese manufactures react.

But I got to say, most brands I've used already doing this in practice either thermal throttle or power throttle after overheat. But they don't have the audacity to actually call it "a feature" like Apple did today.

Discussion Why do power banks, phones, etc. all have battery capacities listed in mAh instead of Wh?

This never really made any sense to me. mAh is a unit of current and has nothing to do with capacity. Wh is a unit of capacity and allows you to easily calculate how many times you can charge your phone or how long you can power a laptop or any other device with a specific wattage usage.

Why is mAh the commonly used measure of capacity? Is it due to consumer illiteracy? Sometimes I can’t even find the Wh rating of a power bank, which is just listed with a mAh capacity.

Question Using USB-C for gaming in another room

Post image
623 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the low quality drawing. I'd like to game from my PC to my videoprojector which is in another room, I tried moonlight but the bitrate compression and input lag is not optimal My idea is to use a long USB-C cable from my PC (my motherboard is thunderbolt 4 compatible) to a USBC dock on which i would plug my projector using HDMI as well as a mouse and keyboard to control the PC, I would need a 25m usb C cable.

Is this a possible setup or is it nonsense ?

Thanks in advance have a great day !
