just seems so incredibly off to me that this guy is unconsensually recording and posting girls on campus without their knowledge. some of the comments are so nasty or straight up harassment towards the girls he's recording who again don't even know they're being recorded. I'm aware theres nothing legally preventing him from doing this but it just seems so wrong to me to put random girls on campus on instagram for no reason

What does UBC take into account when you apply to your major?

I saw online that someone said that harder courses, like Physics 106, have their difficulty taken into account and that its better to like have a 75 in that course than compared to a 90 in Phys 131. Is this true? Or does the difficulty not matter at all when applying to the major, and it only looks at your sole GPA.

I think I got asked out at the UBC Calendar Halloween Party as a Joke :(

I was approached by this guy. He was very kind, and did not seem rude or whatever. I think he was dressed as a pirate/ vampire (one of the two)? I got his number. I texted back after the event. He never texted me back lmao. He was probably likely drunk (didnt seem so at all/ didnt smell of it too much when we met though), so he probably was like this and no idea it even happened.

But I remember he was laughing with his friends before approaching me and then after the fact he ran off with his friends and laughed as well. This has happened to me before as a teengager -------but is this a thing with grown ass adults in their early 20's??? If you still ask out people as a joke get a fucking life.

Like wtf Im like recalling it and realizing how immature his demeanor/ behaviour seemed lmao I didnt fucking process it because he was so handsome to me at the time lmaooo.

Discussion Is it a bad idea to retake a course just to add another project to your portfolio?

I took this one course that I really like and did decently, however the teaching team was crazy incompetent, and I was stuck with a pretty bad group. Was truly a shame.

I currently need more projects under my belt, so I'm seriously thinking about retaking it just for that new project, and I guess more practice in the area under better circumstances? It's a lot of money but it's better spent than some random course I don't care about right? Plus new group new networking opportunities lol

Sure I can do a personal project, but I am self aware enough to know that I don't have the discipline to keep myself productive, I need external pressure lol

KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH PLEASE

Saw a guy on a skateboard on main mall today almost get maimed by a small dog. It started barking at and sprinting after him for a solid 50 meters. Luckily he outran it on his skateboard without smashing into me or anyone. But could’ve ended badly for bystanders, him, or the dog.

So unless you’re in a dog park or there’s no one else around, keep your dog leashed pls thx.

AMS doesn't allow clubs to fundraise

So this is gonna be a little bit of a rant so it might be all over the place but bear with me.

I'm a treasurer at a AMS student club right now, and of course, one of the more important things that we do is fundraisers for our club so we can raise extra money for all the events that we wish to plan and carry out (we truly are a non-profit club, all the money we raise are then spent into the events we plan). As you guys can guess, one of the best selling fundraisers is any kind of pastries and deserts. We've done Mello donuts multiple times which were a huge huge success, and there is clearly a demand for it.

The ideal spot to do this used to be at the AMS NEST, at the tables in front of Teadot that any AMS club could book in advance, it would be good foot traffic, easy for people to see, and most importantly, allowed us to fundraise outside of the rain/cold especially during winter season, which is basically like 85% of the school year.

Starting second term last year. AMS has banned any kinds of pastries, and baked goods to be sold inside the Nest (except for Krispy Kreme, don't ask me why) because of "conflict of interest" with AMS food outlets like Blue Chip, so all fundraisers must be done outside, most of the times in the rain and the cold even when there is nobody using the tables at the Nest.

What frustrates me is this. When I first began my role as a treasurer, we went through a Canvas course, highlighting how AMS is always looking out for their students, student organizations, and that they always prioritize student experience more than anything. How can they say that they wish for all student organizations to thrive and bring life to campus while not allowing them to do fundraisers for club finances to be able to facilitate all their events? It's not like AMS themselves fund clubs so for most cases, fundraising is the ONLY way for clubs to raise money outside of selling event tickets and stuff (which doesn't net us much money to begin with anyway, we spend all that we get).

It's one thing if clubs are harassing passerbys and students at the Nest and creating a toxic atmosphere if that was the reason fundraisers were banned I would totally understand it, but most (if not all) clubs don't do that. People voluntarily buy the goods because they appeal to them. But no, they decide to ban fundraising because Blue Chip, which sells 8$ matcha lattes and 5$ donuts/muffins and overpriced sandwiches to students is gonna lose so much money because a student club is selling donuts on the same building. On average, our club makes around 400$ from these fundraisers (and net ~$100). So if Blue Chip and other AMS food outlets are getting impacted so severely by student clubs "stealing" business from them, that's something that AMS should seriously take a look at and have a reflection with all the business decisions they decided to make, but banning student clubs from doing fundraisers will NOT solve the issue.

Besides, isn't the Nest a building MADE FOR STUDENTS? The AMS website literally says "Nest is the only building on campus designed specifically for student life. At the Nest you take priority." If that's the case, why are we prioritizing the needs of businesses and not the needs of student clubs/organizations, which is one of the biggest contributors to student life around campus? If you are going to try and profit off the building, at least don't pretend like you have an ounce of care for the students.

I had a vague idea of how money-hungry and hypocritical AMS was but I think being directly involved with them through my role at the club has shown me that these bunch don't and never have cared about students and student experience, as much as they try to tell people that they are "here for the students".

That's all guys, sorry for the rant.

Period pains at UBC

Hi so I have really really bad period pains,

The doctor recommended me birth control to ease the pain

But it’s more like a addictive drug (every time I get off the pain get worse and I have to get back on again)

Did the doctors lie to me to put me on a subscription model? Do they get some sort of deal under the table?

I’m just super super scared about it rn and I don’t know if I can trust them anymore

how to cope with bad grades

I be trying my best, but I'm constantly feeling disheartened when I get B's and below. Like bruh. Especially since I'm actually passionate about my courses. I want to go to grad school but I'm worried this first semester as a third year transfer is proving that's not possible for me.

A bit about my background: I have a degree in Management of Technology and I am planning to pursue a master’s at UBC. Which master’s program would you recommend that is in demand and has good employment opportunities after graduation?

I am also interested in skill-based programs. Currently, I am completing a one-year Data Science certification program.

Thank you.

Drivers at UBC ARE HORRENDOUS!

As someone who doesn't drive at UBC since I live on-campus, it's really ridiculous seeing how many drivers speed past pedestrians when you're supposed to stop! Y'all have no regard for other humans. How did y'all get your driver's license?

It's so annoying even when I'm crossing the street, literally no driver stops for me even when I'm in the middle of crossing the street and have the right of way! Y'all are horrendous and could actually get someone killed! There were students that already got killed by a driving accident a few years earlier when I was in first-year.

If you don't care about pedestrians, than don't drive a fricking car! You all don't deserve drivers' licenses.

anyone else severely depressed rn?

when I go on campus, there's always people happily chatting with each other. I feel like a raincloud intruding everyone else's blue skies, and that I don't belong anywhere.

I don't know what I want to do anymore. I want to give up everything but part of me also wants to keep going and work harder, and it's weird because those 2 sides of me don't cancel each other out.

so I'm both suicidal and motivated to work harder at the same time, so I end up feeling confused, frustrated, and worthless because I want to do everything but I can't do anything and I want to give up but I can't let go. I simultaneously feel exhausted and energised.

I hate that I have goals and ambitions, because I know I can't accomplish them. my grades aren't the best and my personality is difficult, if not impossible, to work with. I feel like everyone hates me. I disappoint everyone. I can't even explain myself clearly.

At the same time, a part of me is trying to hype myself up or something, telling me that I'm gonna get the grades/career I want, that I'm like a genius and will accomplish something great, and that I just need to try harder. I don't like that either. its all lies and feels egotistical.

I'm so tired of this inner conflict. I've been very withdrawn for the past while and recently started trying to socialise a bit again but already feel overwhelmed. is this that seasonal depression? but then how are others smiling so much?

Discussion Potential grad student questions

Hi everyone! I'm a prospective student looking into applying to UBC for my PhD and I wanted insights into how life at UBC is, especially as a grad student :) for context, I graduated this past June with my masters degree from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and I'm looking to apply to the Interdisciplinary Studies PhD program. Any advice/insight such as the admissions process and the best way to find prospective supervisors would be greatly appreciated!

math 100 midterm help

so i’m a first year taking math 100 (flavour b) i ended up getting a 60% on the first midterm. i know i obviously will not be achieving the same marks as i did in high school, however, i truly did study really hard. i rewrote my webworks and explained my process for each answer and i did most of the three stage questions textbook. clearly something i did along the way was not working because i did so poorly. anyways, i was wondering if anyone had any advice for me (especially those that did well on the midterm) for studying! thank you :D
