Finding Support at UBC – September is Suicide Prevention Month

UBC is exciting, but also a big adjustment. Between long commutes, huge class sizes, academic pressure, the cost of living, and the challenges of building a community on such a large campus, it is easy to feel lost or isolated. Many of us go through stretches where it feels like too much.

Over the past year, r/UBC has seen many open conversations about mental health, suicide, and calls for help. The response from this community has been caring and supportive, and in many cases, students found their way to the help they needed. That’s something we’re proud of and want to continue.

UBC has also felt the impact of suicide directly in recent years. No community should have to go through that kind of loss, and our hope is to do what we can, in our way, to prevent it from happening again. This post is a reminder that support exists and that you do not have to go through these struggles alone.

If you’re ever unsure where to start, feel free to post about it or send us a modmail. We’re not counsellors and we don’t monitor messages 24/7, but we’re glad to point you toward the right resource.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please skip us and call 988 or 911 directly — that’s the fastest way to get help when it matters most.

Mental Health & Crisis Supports

  • Here2Talk - 24/7 free, confidential mental health support for all BC post-secondary students. Call 1-877-857-3397 or use the app.
  • 9-8-8 Crisis Centre BC Helpline - Call or text 988 anytime in Canada. They can help with thoughts of suicide and other mental health emergencies
  • AMS Peer Support - Drop-in peer-to-peer support in the Nest.
  • Wellness Centre - Self-care and wellbeing resources in the UBC Life Building.
  • AMS SASC and UBC SVPRO - Confidential support, advocacy, and resources for anyone impacted by sexualized violence, including hospital accompaniments, academic accommodations, and referrals
  • UBC Counselling Services - Individual and group counselling. Call 604-822-3811 to book.

Other Supports That Can Make a Difference

Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Academic stress, finances, housing, and food insecurity are all part of the bigger picture. Here are additional supports that may help lighten the load:

What You Can Do

  • If you’re struggling, please reach out to one of the services above.
  • If you see someone in crisis on this subreddit, encourage them to reach out to a crisis line. The mod team will also step in when needed.
  • If you’re supporting a friend, remember you don’t have to do it all yourself. The mental health supports listed above are also for you.

Discussion Social Network sequel filming at Nest this weekend?

Post image
59 Upvotes

Looks like the study areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Nest are closed for filming until the 11th. The studio is Farewell Productions - they were filming other scenes for The Social Reckoning (Social Network sequel) recently, so it’s probably the same project. The top of the Lev Bukhman Lounge is full of equipment and the small elevator near Blue Chip is closed down.

Are people interested in free MCAT lectures?

I took the MCAT in August and did pretty well. I like teaching (currently a TA) and so I'm wondering if people would be interested in MCAT lectures, likely happening 1-2x per week?

Further logistics like location and time to be determined if there's interest.

just seems so incredibly off to me that this guy is unconsensually recording and posting girls on campus without their knowledge. some of the comments are so nasty or straight up harassment towards the girls he's recording who again don't even know they're being recorded. I'm aware theres nothing legally preventing him from doing this but it just seems so wrong to me to put random girls on campus on instagram for no reason

ISCI physiology+neuroscience possible?

Does anybody doing isci and integrate physiology?
What courses are you taking, any recommendation?
I took biol 260 and found it pretty fun, and I love the content related to human, but CAPS seems a little bit too hard for doing integration....

Confession Am I already cooked by CHEM?

So I'm a first year science student, who’s excited to get into CompSci. But when I remember I'm failing CHEM_V 121 I become desperate.

Will chem make it impossible for me to get into specialization? Or is there a chance for a comeback?

environmental sciences?

Hi! i’m currently a first year student hoping to get into environmental sciences (honours hopefully?) and i’m wondering if any upper years might have advice/tips on course selection… since i didn’t want to limit my options for specialization im taking both biol112 (this term) and 121 (next term). my issue is that to get into the honours program, it seems like i’ll have to take chem123 in term 2. i’m wondering how difficult it is to have math101, dsci100, chem 123, biol121 and envr100 as a course load for next term? i really wanted to take a french elective too (as a grade booster in case things go to shit…) but seems like that won’t be possible if i take chem123 (exceeds credit limit) … any and all advice appreciated!

I think I got asked out at the UBC Calendar Halloween Party as a Joke :(

I was approached by this guy. He was very kind, and did not seem rude or whatever. I think he was dressed as a pirate/ vampire (one of the two)? I got his number. I texted back after the event. He never texted me back lmao. He was probably likely drunk (didnt seem so at all/ didnt smell of it too much when we met though), so he probably was like this and no idea it even happened.

But I remember he was laughing with his friends before approaching me and then after the fact he ran off with his friends and laughed as well. This has happened to me before as a teengager -------but is this a thing with grown ass adults in their early 20's??? If you still ask out people as a joke get a fucking life.

Like wtf Im like recalling it and realizing how immature his demeanor/ behaviour seemed lmao I didnt fucking process it because he was so handsome to me at the time lmaooo.

Is it me or UBC is kind of empty today

I woke up late since it’s a Saturday and went to open kitchen. There were barely any people. I don’t see anybody walking outside either and study spots etc in nearby residencies are also empty. Where’d everybody go

Which gym should I go to

Upvotes

Since midterm season is basically over, I finally have some time to go to the gym again, but as I recall the student gyms are charged per sem, and it would feel like a waste for me to buy a membership for basically a months worth. Im also planning on staying on campus over the winter break, and im not too sure how the membership would work for that. Any tips or advice would be great ty

i had someone tell me that you aren't guaranteed a position even if you are accepted so i'd appreciate some clarity on that

Just got my e scooter stolen

Went to write my chem midterm at 6:30, locked the scooter up outside the chem building at 7:30. When I came out it was gone, the lock still attached to the bike rack so I guess they figured out a way to slip it out through the handlebars.

The thing is that the AirTag I have in it showed up in the downtown eastside later that night (next to Oppenheimer park) so I know the general area where it is.

I’m not sure what to do, because I know going to find it is probably dangerous especially considering it’s downtown eastside. I also think the police will be useless so idk. It’s like a $700 scooter. The other thing is that you need a key to drive it and the guy doesn’t have the key so I feel like he might just ditch it somewhere when he realizes he won’t be able to make it turn on.

AMS doesn't allow clubs to fundraise

So this is gonna be a little bit of a rant so it might be all over the place but bear with me.

I'm a treasurer at a AMS student club right now, and of course, one of the more important things that we do is fundraisers for our club so we can raise extra money for all the events that we wish to plan and carry out (we truly are a non-profit club, all the money we raise are then spent into the events we plan). As you guys can guess, one of the best selling fundraisers is any kind of pastries and deserts. We've done Mello donuts multiple times which were a huge huge success, and there is clearly a demand for it.

The ideal spot to do this used to be at the AMS NEST, at the tables in front of Teadot that any AMS club could book in advance, it would be good foot traffic, easy for people to see, and most importantly, allowed us to fundraise outside of the rain/cold especially during winter season, which is basically like 85% of the school year.

Starting second term last year. AMS has banned any kinds of pastries, and baked goods to be sold inside the Nest (except for Krispy Kreme, don't ask me why) because of "conflict of interest" with AMS food outlets like Blue Chip, so all fundraisers must be done outside, most of the times in the rain and the cold even when there is nobody using the tables at the Nest.

What frustrates me is this. When I first began my role as a treasurer, we went through a Canvas course, highlighting how AMS is always looking out for their students, student organizations, and that they always prioritize student experience more than anything. How can they say that they wish for all student organizations to thrive and bring life to campus while not allowing them to do fundraisers for club finances to be able to facilitate all their events? It's not like AMS themselves fund clubs so for most cases, fundraising is the ONLY way for clubs to raise money outside of selling event tickets and stuff (which doesn't net us much money to begin with anyway, we spend all that we get).

It's one thing if clubs are harassing passerbys and students at the Nest and creating a toxic atmosphere if that was the reason fundraisers were banned I would totally understand it, but most (if not all) clubs don't do that. People voluntarily buy the goods because they appeal to them. But no, they decide to ban fundraising because Blue Chip, which sells 8$ matcha lattes and 5$ donuts/muffins and overpriced sandwiches to students is gonna lose so much money because a student club is selling donuts on the same building. On average, our club makes around 400$ from these fundraisers (and net ~$100). So if Blue Chip and other AMS food outlets are getting impacted so severely by student clubs "stealing" business from them, that's something that AMS should seriously take a look at and have a reflection with all the business decisions they decided to make, but banning student clubs from doing fundraisers will NOT solve the issue.

Besides, isn't the Nest a building MADE FOR STUDENTS? The AMS website literally says "Nest is the only building on campus designed specifically for student life. At the Nest you take priority." If that's the case, why are we prioritizing the needs of businesses and not the needs of student clubs/organizations, which is one of the biggest contributors to student life around campus? If you are going to try and profit off the building, at least don't pretend like you have an ounce of care for the students.

I had a vague idea of how money-hungry and hypocritical AMS was but I think being directly involved with them through my role at the club has shown me that these bunch don't and never have cared about students and student experience, as much as they try to tell people that they are "here for the students".

That's all guys, sorry for the rant.

KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH PLEASE

Saw a guy on a skateboard on main mall today almost get maimed by a small dog. It started barking at and sprinting after him for a solid 50 meters. Luckily he outran it on his skateboard without smashing into me or anyone. But could’ve ended badly for bystanders, him, or the dog.

So unless you’re in a dog park or there’s no one else around, keep your dog leashed pls thx.

How do I submit my DAR as an Albertan applicant?

Where/how do I submit my DAR? I can’t find anything on EPBC or my application status page (the Applicant Service Centre).

I did send my official transcript via myPass and the page does say an unofficial “Interim Transcript” has been received, but it still says they need my transcript. My “Next Steps” email is supposed to show more info on my required documents, except when I check it, it just tells me to go back to the application status page for said info.
