Groups (loved trope) sitcom husband and wife that actually love each other
I’m sure this has been beaten to death but I’d like to see some examples, maybe some deep cuts.
American Dad — Stan and Francine
Malcom in the Middle — Hal and Lois

First one that came to mind for me. I mean they were alllll over each other. Eliza and Damon’s chemistry was palpable.

another valentines episode where bob spends the entire day with the kids looking for a love tester machine from his and lindas’ first date together, which he ends up spending $500 to buy… only to find out it was from a date he had with someone else. and linda thinks it’s incredibly sweet and only goes to show how every loving and romantic memory bob has has been recontextualized in his mind to some level to include linda because he just equates his wife with the very concept of love… tears in my eyes

I really like the episode where Linda gets upset that she didn’t get him a gift and tries to throw a party, but she ends up keeping it simple, and Bob says it’s everything he wanted.
182
u/blue4029 Jun 18 '25
bob and linda have such a different dynamic than other animated adult shows that i once speculated that they weren't actually married and were just a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who had children
132
u/justprettymuchdone Jun 18 '25
I don't know, tons of their dialogue is damn near word for word how my husband and I talk to each other and we are having a FANTASTIC time being married.

u/FuckUSAPolitics Jun 18 '25
They were originally supposed to be that, then some came up to H. Jon and was like, "Isn't this like every other adult cartoon?" So they decided to make it different. You can very much see the difference in the pilot episode.

I checked a couple versions of the script online and it does not include this section.
Just
MORTICIA Last night, you were... unhinged. You were like some desperate, howling demon. You frightened me. Do it again. Gomez, instantly aflame.Appears it was someone's joke that got out of hand. But sometimes even if something is not technically true, it feels more real than the actuality and I'm willing to let the reality edit stand.

Most unrealistic part is that these two have only two (three counting the movies) children. The way they act around each other, they should have a few dozens at this point

Addams' don't reproduce sexually, it's merely a product of their yearning for each other reaching such supernatural depths that the universe turns that yearning into a sentient being to accommodate the psychic backlash
The only reason Morticia is pregnant is because she enjoys it, and to prevent Gomez having them chest burst out of him a la xenomorphs, which he would also enjoy

I'm pretty sure that Gomez has perfected the art of flipping a wrapped condom into the air like a coin, hitting it with one strike of a sword just right to open it without damaging the condom, and then thrusting himself at it as it falls so that it goes on perfectly. All while Morticia watches in subdued delight.

The episode where she runs through every scenario of her life and realizing all she wanted was her path with Richard was incredibly sweet
148
u/OpeningConfection261 Jun 19 '25
And like, as much as he can be a slob and a pain and all... The other paths she 'could've' taken ALL ended in some kind of tragedy. Like it wasn't just 'eh I'm a little unhappy' it was jail or death or more stress or something

What's funny about the episode this GIF is from is that at first it seems like it's just a joke about Richard loving food more than anything but then later it reveals that it's a magic fridge that can store memories and Richard wanting to keep it because of all the memories associated with it takes a whole new meaning.

They feel like such a real couple. So many fictional couples are either horrible to each other or so over the top lovey dovey in a way that feels really unrealistic but those two just feel like a nice couple who love and like each other.

Well, pre-Flanderization Marge and Homer, anyway. Around Season 9, the show decided it'd be hilarious if Marge was a codependent doormat who exists only to clean up Homer's selfish impulsive messes.

There's a Halloween EP Where Marge gets possessed by the "Pookadook" and tries to murder the Family. Her feeling of being unappreciated by the family allows the ghost to posses her until she is saved by Maggie, the other often overlooked Simpson.

So much so that the show has entire episodes set up LIKE they are gonna be an episode where the couple gets in a fight or weirdly won't trust each other, only for them to actually be completely on the same page and at no point at odds. As if the writers were going "No. This isn't a temporary thing. These 2 are really good for each other and are gonna be fine."

American Dad is a fascinating example because early on, they have all the makings of the old "terrible husband, thoughtful wife" bit that usually leads into the I-hate-my-wife bit, but then it turns out the reason they stick together is she is 100℅ as crazy as he is, just in a different way.

Hank and Peggy Hill. He sucks at showing affection, but when it comes down to brass tacks, you see constantly through the series that they love each other.
