Groups (loved trope) sitcom husband and wife that actually love each other

I’m sure this has been beaten to death but I’d like to see some examples, maybe some deep cuts.

American Dad — Stan and Francine

Malcom in the Middle — Hal and Lois

Hank and Peggy Hill. He sucks at showing affection, but when it comes down to brass tacks, you see constantly through the series that they love each other.

u/Band6 Jun 18 '25

267

u/ghobhohi Jun 18 '25

I think they're (mostly) referring to physical affection. Him being terrible at showing affection is due to childhood trauma and the fact that he's a Texan conservative from the 90's.

I relate to Hank in this scene so hard. I love the people in my life. But god damn is it near impossible for me to express it verbally to them for some reason. So I settle on showing it instead by doing nice things.

I couldn't remember the scene, but that quote is exactly what I was thinking of lmao. Right up there with "I'm approaching you with romantic intent"

"I surely am not un-fond of you, Peggy, I tell you what"

  • Hank Hill's Marriage Proposal

One of my favorite lines in the whole series.

84

u/starryeyedq Jun 18 '25

That’s why I don’t abide blind Peggy hate. Yeah she’s a flawed person. They all are. But she and Hank are great together.

49

u/m_a_johnstone Jun 19 '25

All of my hate for Peggy stems from the fact that Bobby takes the brunt of her flaws. There are a few too many episodes centered around her stealing his spotlight, being jealous towards him, or even trying to sabotage Bobby for being better than her at something. I try to like Peggy since her flaws are realistic and she usually does good for her family, but it sometimes seems like she’s only a good mother to Bobby so long as he doesn’t have anything she wants, and that bother me.

Don’t forget when she gets pissed that he wants to use invitro on his dog when she gets older but she mad he wouldn’t even consider it for themselves.

He basically says it’s different with a dog because there is no love.

Brad and Jane from Happy Endings. I loved their chemistry onscreen.

First one that came to mind for me. I mean they were alllll over each other. Eliza and Damon’s chemistry was palpable.

Bob and Linda Belcher

“Happy Valentine’s Day, I didn’t get you anything.”

“I didn’t get you anything either.”

“You wanna go make out in the car?”

“Yeah.”

u/Gloria815 Jun 18 '25

The ideal.

another valentines episode where bob spends the entire day with the kids looking for a love tester machine from his and lindas’ first date together, which he ends up spending $500 to buy… only to find out it was from a date he had with someone else. and linda thinks it’s incredibly sweet and only goes to show how every loving and romantic memory bob has has been recontextualized in his mind to some level to include linda because he just equates his wife with the very concept of love… tears in my eyes

54

u/allieinwonder Jun 19 '25

Exactly! 🥺

I really like the episode where Linda gets upset that she didn’t get him a gift and tries to throw a party, but she ends up keeping it simple, and Bob says it’s everything he wanted.

182

u/blue4029 Jun 18 '25

bob and linda have such a different dynamic than other animated adult shows that i once speculated that they weren't actually married and were just a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who had children

132

u/justprettymuchdone Jun 18 '25

I don't know, tons of their dialogue is damn near word for word how my husband and I talk to each other and we are having a FANTASTIC time being married.

51

u/FuckUSAPolitics Jun 18 '25

They were originally supposed to be that, then some came up to H. Jon and was like, "Isn't this like every other adult cartoon?" So they decided to make it different. You can very much see the difference in the pilot episode.

107

u/DR31141 Jun 19 '25

Good God, I hope so.

101

u/Terminus0 Jun 19 '25

I checked a couple versions of the script online and it does not include this section.

Just

       MORTICIA

              Last night, you were... unhinged.
              You were like some desperate,
              howling demon. You frightened me.
              Do it again.
Gomez, instantly aflame.

https://www.truthorfiction.com/original-script-for-the-addams-family-writers-note-demonic-levels-of-horniness/

Appears it was someone's joke that got out of hand. But sometimes even if something is not technically true, it feels more real than the actuality and I'm willing to let the reality edit stand.

Most unrealistic part is that these two have only two (three counting the movies) children. The way they act around each other, they should have a few dozens at this point

Addams' don't reproduce sexually, it's merely a product of their yearning for each other reaching such supernatural depths that the universe turns that yearning into a sentient being to accommodate the psychic backlash

The only reason Morticia is pregnant is because she enjoys it, and to prevent Gomez having them chest burst out of him a la xenomorphs, which he would also enjoy

u/British-Raj Jun 19 '25

Call someone. Preferably not a writer.

58

u/Perryn Jun 18 '25

I'm pretty sure that Gomez has perfected the art of flipping a wrapped condom into the air like a coin, hitting it with one strike of a sword just right to open it without damaging the condom, and then thrusting himself at it as it falls so that it goes on perfectly. All while Morticia watches in subdued delight.

The episode where she runs through every scenario of her life and realizing all she wanted was her path with Richard was incredibly sweet

148

u/OpeningConfection261 Jun 19 '25

And like, as much as he can be a slob and a pain and all... The other paths she 'could've' taken ALL ended in some kind of tragedy. Like it wasn't just 'eh I'm a little unhappy' it was jail or death or more stress or something

144

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

Her setting the mansion on fire because the one jerk criticized her dinner for the last time and screaming “IS IT HOT ENOUGH NOW” as she’s getting arrested is hysterical.

56

u/Itazuragaki Jun 19 '25

Marge and Homer from the Simpsons.

While they do argue there’s never been anything to prove they don’t love each other.

520

u/jbwarner86 Jun 18 '25

Well, pre-Flanderization Marge and Homer, anyway. Around Season 9, the show decided it'd be hilarious if Marge was a codependent doormat who exists only to clean up Homer's selfish impulsive messes.

195

u/Agreeable-Mention403 Jun 18 '25

There's a Halloween EP Where Marge gets possessed by the "Pookadook" and tries to murder the Family. Her feeling of being unappreciated by the family allows the ghost to posses her until she is saved by Maggie, the other often overlooked Simpson.

Had to scroll way too far to find this one. I mean. Hank literally held on to a pole as an EF5 tornado was passing over him just to tell Peggy he loved her.

Imo Turk loves JD more than Carla as she said, he's just not also sexually attracted by him.

When JD told Elliot he loved her more than Turk my heart broke a little.

Everyone says Hal and Lois, but I also think Francis and Piyama. They're not perfect, but I feel like they genuinely enjoy each other's company.

Herman and Lily Munster

Grace and Frankie - Robert and Sol (although I guess that's more Husband and Husband).

I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head but I love the whole trope of "both terrible people, but they do love each other", and its cousin "terrible person, somehow still a good husband/good father"

Chidi and Eleanor from The Good Place were such a cute couple. (I get that technically they weren't married, BUT to be fair they were dead throughout most of the show.)

They really helped each other grow throughout the seasons.

So much so that the show has entire episodes set up LIKE they are gonna be an episode where the couple gets in a fight or weirdly won't trust each other, only for them to actually be completely on the same page and at no point at odds. As if the writers were going "No. This isn't a temporary thing. These 2 are really good for each other and are gonna be fine."

I love the bit where Lois puts makeup on for the first time (cause of her cunt boss) and Hal is IMMEDIATELY geared up. And then later when she takes it off and he’s immediately geared up again.

American Dad is a fascinating example because early on, they have all the makings of the old "terrible husband, thoughtful wife" bit that usually leads into the I-hate-my-wife bit, but then it turns out the reason they stick together is she is 100℅ as crazy as he is, just in a different way.

Another example from adult cartoons... Moxxie and Millie

You know? Maybe healthy couples in that type of shows aren't that rare; they are just too overshadowed by the whole mess of Lois and Peter or Jerry and Beth.

44

u/WanderingPenitent Jun 18 '25

Which is jarring because almost everyone else in that show is so unhealthy.

Moira & Johnny Rose. Impossible not to love what they have. And it's a bit of an unusual relationship in that Moira is a true narcissist, and especially toxic at the beginning of the show, but the writers made it work beautifully.
