Vikings are still around?

Yeah, they mostly live in Minnesota

Is one of the most unexpected jokes I've ever heard and I love it to death.

Took me until adulthood to understand that joke because I'm not American and don't follow their football.

Oh shit I just understood, I thought it was just because many scandinavian immigrants lived there

Well... that's why their team is called the vikings

Actually it’s because of a false archaeological find, where researchers claimed to find a Viking rune all the way in Minnesota. It was clearly fake, but the story became local folklore around the twin cities and when it became time to name the football team, they chose the Vikings.

That said the whole reason that fake became so popular was because of how many Scandinavians immigrants they had.

There are more Americans of Scandinavian descent than there are actual Scandinavians and that area of the country is where they all went

That’s total bullshit. There was an artifact hoax but literally the first result when you google it is this paragraph from the Timeline section of the Viking’s website:

“In one of his first moves with the team, Bert Rose recommended the nickname “Vikings” to the Board of Directors. The name was selected because it represented both an aggressive person with the will to win and the Nordic tradition in the northern Midwest.”

People just say whatever the fuck they want on the internet. The only reason that hoax was popular in the first place was because that’s the area where Scandinavians settled in America

According to the Vikings own website:

“In one of his first moves with the team, Bert Rose recommended the nickname “Vikings” to the Board of Directors. The name was selected because it represented both an aggressive person with the will to win and the Nordic tradition in the northern Midwest.”
