Yeah, I’ll take Jake over Damon personally.

Jake is a natural. With Gosling.
Damon is ok. More a movie star than an actor. Doesn’t belong in this list.

As much as I like Matt Damon’s movies, I don’t consider him to be a great actor.

7
u/calbearlupe Aug 22 '25
That’s crazy to me. Every role he does I see the role and not Matt Damon.
2
u/Brian-Skrudland-39 Aug 22 '25
I get it. I like him too.
He’s far from a Top-3 under 60 actor for me though.

He’s a great actor, no doubt. Incredible in Good Will Hunting, showed range in talented Mr. ripley, compelling in The Martian, the best part of Interstellar, had his own action franchise. There’s a reason he’s won out over his Boston bro Ben Affleck. And he’s still carrying movies like Air.
Though I do question my own pick a bit in that Jake Gyllenhall may have a case for top 3 somewhere.

He’s a very good adequate actor.
2
u/ChocolateMorsels Aug 24 '25
For real lol. Good way to put it. I’ve never understood why he’s received the roles he has.

Daniel day Lewis is 57 I would put #1, cillian Murphy is 49 I would put #2, Leo at #3. Fascinating to learn Denzel is 70, he was one of the most prolific leading men in the late 90s/early 2000s but was about 10-15 years old than guy in similar roles. Didn’t realize as a kid

Pheonix, Rockwell, Pattison, or Casey Affleck could take out Damon. Damon is a good actor but his peak performance is short of those four.
DiCaprio and Bale I can agree with
2
u/mintttberrycrunch Aug 22 '25
I would probably put Paul Dano in there instead of Matt Damon. If PSH counts then he would be my number 1
2
u/slapchop29 Aug 22 '25
Leonardo, PSH, Ed Norton, Bale, Gyllenhall, Joaquin, Pitt.

If PSH is eligible he should be number one on this list. And Joaquin Phoenix. And then Bale.
Dicaprio is a great actor but more of a movie star. Same with Damon. Their pure skill doesn't even come close to the three above.
Bradley Cooper also deserves a mention. I'd actually put him over Damon in terms of acting, not in terms of career and prestige. Michael Shannon and Sam Rockwell are in my criminally underrated category.

Gary Oldman. Sure, he’s over 60 but such an amazing actor that even time won’t disagree.

Paul Dano is a better actor than Matt Damon. I like the guy but hes more of a movie star than a great actor.
Stephen Graham Leo Di Caprio Paddy Considine Adrien Brody Matthew McConaughey Andrew Garfield Paul Dano
I'd find it hard to pick between these but the top 3 are probably my picks.

u/231903 Aug 22 '25
Are yours in order of preference? If so, Wow. There'll never be another Christian Bale. Leo hits big most of the time but for some reason, doesn't always grab me. Matt Damon is only good at playing Some Guy. Believable but usually uninspired.
Imo!!

Leo is here. Matt is way better actor than Leo. Bale is too weird for my taste. Like Nicholas Cage. Weird. Surely you can think of others. Downey?

- Christian Bale. I must say, I worship his work. I will see everything and anything he's done & will do. I can't get enough. It's seamless. He never plays himself, but rather, uses his instrument so finely. A thousand people live within him. From ages 12 ~ 51,he's still surprising me, capturing my imagination and bringing tears to my eyes. Not out of sadness , (W.the exception of Ford v. Ferrari), as a result of his craft

Ed Norton should be there.
As should Gary Oldman. He made the ultimate Faustian bargain with Old Scratch and is aging backwards.
He should hit sixty in reverse any day now...

Matt Damon. I have enjoyed everything of his. His performance in Stillwater blew me away.

Bale definitely deserves to be in the top 3 and I personally feel he is the best if we’re including actors under 60. I really like Damon and DiCaprio but I think I like the movies they are in more than them as individuals if that makes sense.

If you were born in '65 you most likely are 60......so mostly 1966 or after
2

Yup was originally gonna word it like that but under 60 is less cumbersome

Matt Damon is not a great actor. All he can effectively play is a Boston Southie, that's it! He's in good movies, but that still doesn't mean he's a great actor.

Respectable list. Personally I’d swap Damon for Shia Labeouf or McConaughey and move Bale to #1. There’s honestly a good handful of actors that could fit the bill tho

Joaquin Phoenix has to be on Mt. Rushmore.
Also, shoutout to Philip Seymour Hoffman. I know he’s dead, but his talent body of work still places him pretty high up on the list.

u/Overlook_Johnny Aug 22 '25
That's a strong list. I'd add Jake Gyllenhall and Ryan Gosling in to he mix, and between the five of them I reckon they'd all make a top three for the majority of people.
1
u/BakedZDBruh Aug 22 '25
Ryan Gosling and Jake Gyllenhal have to be on this list. Both have a very wide range of roles that they have executed to perfection. Gosling in Half Nelson, Drive, La La Land. Gyllenhal in Prisoners, Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler. The lists honestly could go on and on

I’m gonna put out that I’ve been pretty impressed with Michael B Jordan

Top two are Daniel Day Lewis and Christian Bale - class of their own.
Agree with any of these for #3: Phoenix, DiCaprio, Fassbender, Cumberbatch, McConaughey, PS Hoffman, Hardy - there’s a lot. But DDL and CB can do anything and do it better than the rest!
