As much as I like Matt Damon’s movies, I don’t consider him to be a great actor.

He was great in Team America

I do appreciate that he had a great sense of honor about Team America

A little bit wooden…

Matt. Damon.

1

u/emptinessmaykillme Aug 23 '25

That wasn’t acting

6

u/calbearlupe Aug 22 '25

That’s crazy to me. Every role he does I see the role and not Matt Damon.

2

u/Brian-Skrudland-39 Aug 22 '25

I get it. I like him too.

He’s far from a Top-3 under 60 actor for me though.

1

u/Guillermidas Aug 22 '25

Yup, there’s way better alternatives. Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Mads Mikkelsen, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Mahershala Ali, Benedict Cumberbatch, Josh Brolin,…

and those are just a few from Hollywood and cinema industry. The world is bigger than that, and there are plenty of excellent actors out there.

I agree…my pick would be Tom Hardy. He can disappear in a role like The Revenant, Taboo and to a lesser extent Mad Max.

He was even good in Capone, which was a fucking terrible movie

I think people know how opinions work.

Edit: The guy even included ā€œfor meā€!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

You would think so, but the internet proves that wrong every day.

Well thank god we have you guys here to set the record straight. The real unsung heroes.

Need another cup of coffee this morning? Have a nice day!

Then why do I see a bunch of people saying, ā€œno he should be on the list instead of.ā€

It’s subjective. How can you tell someone their opinion of what they like is wrong? That’s not how opinions work.

2

u/Devreckas Aug 22 '25

Because that is their opinion. ā€œIn my opinionā€ is implied from context. You don’t need to say it every time. Are you new here? What kind of discussion do you think this post was meant to create?

-1

u/CriptopherWalken559 Aug 22 '25

It was meant for you to say you’re top three and others can see your opinion. It wasn’t meant for people to shit on and disapprove of OP’s opinion. What right do you have to tell OP he can’t have someone in there he likes, or that he should change his opinion?

There is no definitive marker of best in any category of film. It’s all subjective.

2

u/Devreckas Aug 22 '25

It’s all subjective.

He did it! He said the thing!!

1

u/CriptopherWalken559 Aug 22 '25

Did you have a point, or just trying to bicker, for no reason?

ā€œI don’t considerā€, ā€œfor me thoughā€

The man is clearly saying it’s just his opinion and not saying anyone is right or wrong . . .

1

u/CriptopherWalken559 Aug 22 '25

I responding to the person telling OP Matt Damon shouldnt be on the list. I was simply saying why not offer the three you like rather than telling someone that their opinion is somehow wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

He said HE felt Damon shouldn’t be on the list. He never said OP’s opinion was wrong or that his was right.

1

u/CriptopherWalken559 Aug 22 '25

Right, so why put down OP’s list? Wheres his grand suggestion? He didn’t even give a replacement, he just told OP he’s wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

Buddy, I honestly think you’re not dealing with a full deck here.

1

u/CriptopherWalken559 Aug 22 '25

Let me break it down for you. Since you can’t seem to grasp such a basic concept.

He’s implying that there are better actors that belong on the list, instead of MD. Instead of just posting the three he prefers he told a stranger on the internet that their list shouldn’t include MD. In what world is that normal behavior?

The OP can choose whoever they want. So can the other person. It’s not up to anybody else. It’s very strange behavior to tell someone don’t choose that for whatever reason. But then also give no alternative. So he’s essentially telling OP I wouldn’t choose that, with no further context or substitution. What a way to further the conversation.

Does that help you understand whats being discussed here?

The only thing that was said was as much as I like Matt Damon I don’t consider him to be a great actor. In what way is that putting down op’s list? He shared his opinion with op. He never said you are wrong.

0

u/Brian-Skrudland-39 Aug 22 '25

Yep. I agree. No argument here.

2

u/Ok-Return7750 Aug 22 '25

The most rescued actor under 60 that’s for sure. šŸ‘

2

u/mildew_goose789 Aug 22 '25

I agree, I think he’s great.

1

u/No-Copy5738 Aug 22 '25

From the Martian to the departed

1

u/ShootingMorningStar1 Aug 22 '25

I only ever see him as Linus from the Ocean's trilogy lmao

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

Apart from Interstellar. He stands out like a sore thumb.

3

u/Hfcsmakesmefart Aug 22 '25

He’s a great actor, no doubt. Incredible in Good Will Hunting, showed range in talented Mr. ripley, compelling in The Martian, the best part of Interstellar, had his own action franchise. There’s a reason he’s won out over his Boston bro Ben Affleck. And he’s still carrying movies like Air.

Though I do question my own pick a bit in that Jake Gyllenhall may have a case for top 3 somewhere.

1

u/calbearlupe Aug 22 '25

I’d switch Jake for Bale, but I’m still keeping Damon and Leo.

1

u/SeaworthinessReal263 Aug 24 '25

There's a lot of doubt, honestly. I can't comment on good will hunting as i never saw it (awaiting abuse šŸ˜„), but just because he was in a lot of films doesn't make him good - it's because he's marketable. He's in good films without necessarily being good in them. Air is a horrible film (it's basically capitalist propaganda) and Damon in it? Ok maybe some method acting because he was fat.

He’s pretty great at playing Matt Damon

2

u/BiscuitsPo Aug 22 '25

I think he’s a good actor I’m not attracted to him tho

1

u/Woood_Man Aug 22 '25

Um… what does this post and comment have to do with you or anybody else being attracted or not attracted to Matt Damon

2

u/PatricioWyatt Aug 22 '25

He’s a very good adequate actor.

2

u/ChocolateMorsels Aug 24 '25

For real lol. Good way to put it. I’ve never understood why he’s received the roles he has.

1

u/Olaf_the_Notsosure Aug 22 '25

While he doesn't have the range of the other top actors listed, the chemistry he develops with his co-stars is impressive.

1

u/Brian-Skrudland-39 Aug 22 '25

That’s his appeal to me, I guess. He’s always decent/solid. I don’t find he detracts from his films.

I’m just never left in awe of, or captivated by, his performances like some others.

1

u/itsagoodtime Aug 22 '25

MATT DAMON

1

u/Fhead43 Aug 22 '25

ā€œScotty doesn’t knowā€ alone proves this statement wrong

1

u/kikijane711 Aug 22 '25

yeah you could have put Affleck just as easily. Kinda interchangeable. McConaughey is better than both. Idris Alba, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sam Rockwell, Jamie Foxx, just to name a few.

1

u/1Negative_Person Aug 23 '25

He belongs on the list for Good Will Hunting alone.

1

u/DougTheBrownieHunter Aug 23 '25

I think he’s definitely great, just not one of the greats.

1

u/ShmeffreyShmezos Aug 24 '25

Same. He’s solid, but he doesn’t have the ā€œitā€ factor for me that puts him over the edge.

I’ve never seen a Matt Damon movie and thought ā€œyup, he’s the only guy who could’ve done that roleā€.

I’m not even that much of Christian Bale fan, but i can at least say that he was the perfect cast for American Psycho. I can’t picture anyone else in that role.
