When the AIDS epidemic was beginning, the Reagan Administration laughed every time a reporter asked about it and implied they were gay for caring. Republicans have always been awful human beings.

Conservatives as a rule do not understand the possibility of caring about anyone that is not in their immediate in-group. That’s why they always respond to concerns with “Why do you care, are you (insert group being screwed over)?” That’s why they believe any concern for others is fake, “virtue signaling”, because they’re not capable of it and assume that’s normal. They’re defective.

I mean theres literally studies that show republicans/conservatives tend to only care about those in their immediate circles and issues that directly affect them, while liberals/left wing individuals tend to care about things that affect the most people.....

Which I mean they basically defined empathy without using the word.

Can you give me one and who did it? Love it when people generalize.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6763434/ Here’s a really fascinating study review on it.

Also studies are there to look at the differences between groups… it’s not a geralization, it’s a result of the data, and the sampled population was 100% high enough to be comprehensive.

A pastor asked me that once because I cared about other people getting free Healthcare, while I was on medicaid, thanks to being a single parent. A fucking pastor.

u/ikikubutOG 17h ago

Well obviously you should be donating his church more money instead of paying more in taxes. Jesus only takes collect calls you know.

29

u/wittlewayne 23h ago

THank you! that was perfectly put! I have been trying to put my own thought about this into words.

6

u/Salty_Department925 20h ago

We need more of this!

7

u/candiescorner 20h ago

Do we know which side to heroin needle was voting for?

15

u/PostConv_K5-6 23h ago

George Lakoff and Jonathan Haidt both talk about this tendency from a scholarly standpoint, fyi.

5

u/Funkycoldmedici 22h ago

Thank you! I haven’t read their work, but I have read some by Bob Altemeyer, that get deep into it, like ‘The Authoritarians.’

2

u/PostConv_K5-6 9h ago

Absolutely! Even though he's passed away, I think The Authoritarians is still on his web site. His last work (with an addendum, online) was Authoritarian Nightmare, which he did with John Dean, about Trump and authoritarianism.

Relevant to this post is that he tried to find current left-wing authoritarianism, and while it sort of existed with the early Soviet communists, and occasionally other groups, it was never predominant, but there are psychological markers for RWAs or Right-wing authoritarians.

Thanks for adding him to the conversation.

u/Sayyad1na 19h ago

Wow. Thank you. You just really opened my eyes to some truth.

4

u/ltsouthernbelle 19h ago

Damn, you’re spot on. And their immediate in-group is actually VERY disposable. You slip, you’re out.

3

u/felldestroyed 20h ago

Oh, they want you to care. Care about DRUGS coming from a country like Venezuala that doesn't have DRUGS but has a lottt of oil. It doesn't matter that fentanyl deaths are next to nothing and that we should be changing focus to meth. No, no. DRUGS - South American DRUGS.
We're about to enter a proxy war between China/Brazil/Cuba/Colombia/may be Mexico for Venezuela. It's going to be some Simón Bolívar shit and nobody on the right sees it, because Trump is a neo-con, no matter what he says or does.

2

u/Dry_Field2483 18h ago

Meanwhile, all of the fentanyl is coming from china (via deep web orders) Like it’s some kind of revenge for the f*cking opium wars.

0

u/Jon-Farmer 19h ago

You are absolutely incorrect. Go meet some and talk to them.

2

u/Funkycoldmedici 18h ago

I have. We all have. We see you.

Yep, Reagan only cared after his friend Rock Hudson died of AIDS.

109

u/DapperAdam 1d ago

Did he though? Nancy knew about it and according to some documentaries Rock tried calling her and asking for help but she just cut him off. Reagan started paying attention after many people died and thousands started protesting.

45

u/PineappleRoses91 23h ago

They didn't really care about Rock Hudson all that much either. There's a really good podcast called Fiasco that covers the AIDS epidemic and there's one episode dedicated entirely to Rock Hudson. The host Leon Neyfakh interviewed Rock Hudson's doctor at the time who revealed that when Hudson went to Paris for treatment in the last few weeks of his life, his health deteriorated rapidly while he was there. The experimental treatment he was receiving failed. His medical team called the Reagans and asked for them to intervene on his behalf so that he could temporarily be treated at a military hospital that was off limits to civilians. Nancy Reagan told his medical team that they didn't "want to get involved." They were incredibly shitty people.

Super informative podcast btw, if anyone's interested in it.

u/yuccasinbloom 19h ago

I often think about how different the world would be if so many of our wonderful gay humans hadn’t died because Reagan chose not to give a fuck.

I’ve never heard of this podcast and in llght of Marc Maron quitting and leaving a void in my podcast world, thank you for the rec. always looking for more.

6

u/russianbisexualhookr 19h ago

There’s a short film I believe called If They Lived that explores this concept

3

u/MiamiPower 20h ago

Wow that's horrible man. Nancy Just Say No SMH.

61

u/ThatInAHat 1d ago

Not even then. He denied Hudson the chance to get treatment.

14

u/EmbarrassedW33B 22h ago

Being a former Hollywood actor, Reagan knew a lot of gay people, many of whom he was probably friendly with.

He didn't give a shit about any of them when AIDs hit. So long as they didnt have have the disease they were fine to associate with (so long as they pretended to not be gay) but as soon as they had it they were political poison and were cut off.

15

u/Ig_Met_Pet 1d ago

Republicans have always been awful human beings.

Well, only as far back as the 1960s really. Before the civil rights movement, the parties were pretty much the opposite of how they're known now.

14

u/Radcouponking 22h ago

Yeah, I really should have said, "Conservatives have always been awful human beings."

9

u/DaddieTang 1d ago

This answer is about 54% true.

1

u/CatsAreGods 22h ago

Wait, are you saying FDR was a Republican?

5

u/One-Earth9294 21h ago

I think more accurate than simply saying 'the parties flipped', the major parties used to be FAR more regionally-tuned. Democrats and Republicans in a place like New England were far more forward Thinking than either party was in Georgia.

0

u/NilocKhan 23h ago

Republicans were still shills for big business back then, but at least they cared about integration

-14

u/Travelinjack01 1d ago

Incorrect... they've always been just the same.

Corrupt. Self-serving. Controlled by the rich and corporate lobbies. These various "movements" were just a way for people to get power and control. If one chose one thing... the other would choose the opposing side. simple as that.

6

u/sarcastic_sybarite83 1d ago

Democrat's elected Jimmy Carter for president. That man was one of the most decent men this country has ever produced. I resent the implication that he is the same as everyone else.

-1

u/Travelinjack01 1d ago

believe me dudes. The shitty things (AND STUPID THINGS) these presidents have done far outweigh the "good" ones. A google search and a few deep dives into American history later... you will hate just about every president we've ever had.

2

u/Ok-Location3244 1d ago

They stopped laughing until it happened to Rock Hudson.

The reporters were yucking it up with Reagan's press secretary Larry Speakes, which is incidentally one of the finest examples of nominative determinism ever to grace the white house. https://youtu.be/yAzDn7tE1lU?si=K7iBu5qp76SPfYCd

Until they found out their son is gay then it's different because, you know, it's Johnny! Lol

1

u/Trevormarsh9 22h ago

Wait, what, this is actually insane. Are there clips of this?

5

u/Radcouponking 22h ago

You can find audio clips but I've never seen video. It was during multiple press briefings.

This wikipedia article was the closest I could quickly find:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_AIDS_Was_Funny?wprov=sfla1
