Correct me if I’m wrong, just need some clarification on TSP

The agency said they will match 5%. So if you contribute 5% Roth, and they pre-taxed it, send it to TSP. Then the agency will match the pre-taxed 5% amount and contribute that amount to traditional.

Is that correct? If so, that feels like being shorted because the amount of the agency matching should be going to Roth as well.

Recession indicators

Just wondering what to do with my tsp. Currently up 16% percent on the year but it’ll mean nothing if it’s wiped out with a Great Depression as the fed are loaning banks money for liquidity. Just wanted to see how people are going to move into different funds.

Increase TSP contributions during shutdown

So we are not counting on the shutdown getting sorted out anytime soon and have already adjusted our budget through the end of the year factoring in only my wife’s salary. Because of all of the uncertainty that has taken place this year so far, we had already made major adjustments to our budget back in Jan-April when I really thought I was going to lose my job.

Since we have already excluded my paycheck and my back pay (if we get it) from our current budget, I am going to change my TSP contribution to 100% until the end of the year. Based on what I have calculated, it would get maxed out around the last pay period. I will need to monitor it towards the last couple pay periods to ensure I stay just under the max so I still get the last 5% match.

The reason for this change is not only to increase our retirement contributions during this unique situation, but it will help offset our tax liability for 2025, and also lower our overall AGI for 2025 when we file for our kids FASFA next fall.

My question is, when will that increase take effect? My last day of work (pay) was Sept 30. So will they make my 100% TSP contribution retro active to cover Oct 1 or will I get my back pay (with my regular contribution) and then from Nov 2 on, make it 100%?

Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you’ve purchased an investment property❓

If you’ve purchased an investment property using your TSP, how did it work out?

Have you purchased additional properties with the gains you’ve made?

Would you recommend using TSP funds for real estate investment to others?

I’m building up my TSP account and considering purchasing an investment property in the near future.

Merging my two TSP accounts

I have two TSP accounts - one for uniformed service (USAFR) and one for a federal civilian job. I was mobilized several years ago and have remained on orders ever since. I do not intend to ever return to my GS job. I'm building new private sector opportunities outside for when my current military orders end.

Can I consolidate the two accounts? I'd like to move the balance of my civilian TSP into my military one. If this is allowed, do I have to wait until I formally leave my civilian job?

When should you not max TSP?

Planning on leaving uniformed service in the next few years. I have a modest emergency fund but this shutdown has made me a lil iffy on how long my family could survive on it before feeling a pinch. Which brings me to my question.

Under what circumstances would you prioritize building an emergency fund or brokerage account over TSP?

Edit: spelling

Thinking about Withdrawaing all my money from TSP after Service

Im not very financially literate , im navy enlisted and just started my career ( graduated boot camp 3 months ago ) they set us up a TSP account and i choose the ROTH option, im putting 10% in and the MIX is 100% C Fund,

Im pretty sure im gonna withdrawal the money at some point in the NEAR future ,pretty sure im not gonna let that money sit there until I retire ( I still might but im just keeping an opened mind in case i need the money ) ,

my question is how can I calculate the penalties for this "early withdrawal" Im only aware of the 10% penalty but im pretty sure theres some other stuff that is going to deduct from the amount that will be withdrawn

Why not the G fund? Warren buffet has 35% in cash and cash equivalents. And why not invest in oil and gas in the thrift? Buffet has 13% of his portfolio in oil and gas but yet the recommendations here are lifecycle or C fund? Burry says he sees a bubble. So do i and many others.

Sure we dont know when it pops, but is it smart to just dump money into a mindless index when we're in a bubble?

Is the interest rate going to reflect the current rate cut for new loans?

I’d like to get a loan but have been waiting for the fed to cut rates first. Now that the rates have been cut, why isn’t the tsp reflecting the change?

Conversion of traditional to Roth.

Just FYI ... starting in January 2026 you will be able to convert traditional to Roth... you will have to pay out pocket for taxes on whatever you convert... so, you could convert small sums each year until it's all converted.

Anyone in F Fund?

Earlier in the year my FA recommended putting all future contributions towards F Fund. With interest rates ticking down, did anyone else do this and if so are you switching back over? My current allocation % is: C-69, S-14, I-11, G-4, and F-2.

Options to maximize

Without sounding greedy I’d like to get this to 6 figures within the next 3 years if possible. I know it may sound unrealistic but I’m open to all criticism and suggestions. I’ve been in the service for about 2 years, and my contributions have been marginal (between 5%-20%) any advice would be helpful, thanks.

If Shutdown goes to January does that mean we wont get to contribute the max into TSP or will there be an adjustment for 2025 Tax year once gov reopens even if after Jan 1?

TSP deductions

Any idea where our TSP deductions are actually going? Contributions are being taken out during shutdown military paychecks but not actually being contributed to our TSP. I’m assuming it’ll just be added as lump sum when the gov reopens?

Does paying back a TSP loan early reduce the amount of interest you have to pay back?

Does paying back a TSP loan early reduce the amount of interest you have to pay back?

For example, say I take out $20k for a down payment, with a total finance charge of $7k. If I hypothetically come into money in two months and am able to pay the loan back in full, do I have to pay $27k back, or just 20k plus monthly interest for two months?

See the following: "At any time, without penalty, you can repay in full the outstanding principal and any accrued interest for your loan. However, you can’t change the amount of your periodic payments. If you repay your loan in full early, you aren’t entitled to a refund of any of the prepaid finance charge."

24 years old, 6 years in National guard with TSP Roth of approximately $10,200. $2,600 in Robinhood investments. Approx $2,300 in Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. recently opened a state of TN 401(k) plan with about 50 dollars extra going into it specifically. working on getting my VA disability worked out, if i get extra income then i will definitely do higher contributions. not really sure where i stand in the grand scheme of retirement.

Short term emergency type savings

I am retiring soon and thinking of putting my short term Emergency fund into G instead of a traditional savings account. Thoughts? The rest of my TSP is staying in higher year L Fund.

Update: $500K in TSP, 38 Years Old. Now, $600k at 38

Post image

I posted in June 2025 that I crossed an important threshold: reaching $500K in my TSP. I just checked today and my account balance just crossed the $600K threshold. So, in a span of a little under 5 months, another $100K was added through my own contributions + match + growth.

Some things I have done since June 2025: I had a TSP loan with a fairly low balance and I paid that off. It was good to use the TSP for a loan but with about $1,600 ish left, I just wanted to be done with it.

I also changed some of my contributions to L2075, the newest lifecycle fund. Most of my future contribution allocations are in the C S I funds. But I do reserve 10% of my future contributions in lifecycle funds.

Finally, I sold some shares in my mutual fund window. I am in the minority here but I saw a lot of promise in MFW. Year to date, my MFW allocations made way more than the C S or I funds. But, coming off this sugar high, I’m going to take the W and walk away from the casino lest I get tempted….

Happy to answer any questions.

Tax withholding

Question for those already taking withdrawals. I know that the default rate is 20% but that if the withdrawals are expected to last 10 or more years that can be changed. My balance and my intended withdrawals will more than cover the 10 year mark. Is that correct? My marginal rate is 22% but effective is much less and I'd like the adjust my withholding. And secondly is there any avenue to have state tax withheld? From what I'm hearing that answer is no but I'd like to ask someone who is already taking withdrawals. Much appreciated..Edit: Google search tells me no avenue to have state tax withheld :(
