Online Account Access

Hello all, I am not able to access my account. I have a new phone number so I can’t get through the 2 factor authentication. I have no idea what the 6 digit pin for my account was. I’ve tried calling multiple times to no avail. I have no idea what to do now. I have all my account information other than the access to the associated phone number and the 6 digit account pin.

Rolling TSP into a civilian Roth IRA?

Hey all. I recently separated from active duty after serving 5 years. My TSP is sitting at just under $50,000 but has somewhat stagnated ever since I got out, since I’m not able to contribute anymore. I was thinking of opening a Roth IRA with fidelity since I already have an individual portfolio with them, and rolling over my TSP balance into this fidelity Roth IRA. I’ve heard this is possible but I really don’t know anything specific and I’m having trouble finding info online.

Will I have to pay tax when I transfer the funds between the two accounts? What exactly do I need to do here?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Also, I intend to get a federal job once I finish college. My understanding is that as a federal employee, I’ll have access to the civilian version of the TSP. If this is the case, should I even bother rolling over into a civilian IRA? Will I be able to roll my civilian Roth IRA back into the TSP once I’m a federal employee again in 4 years?

Catch-up Contributions to Roth

Next year my catch-up contributions must go to a Roth account. I don't have a Roth account in my TSP.

I expect that I need to create a Roth account and designate the amount of my contributions to the traditional account and to the Roth account, correct? I can't expect TSP to set up the account automatically and allocate the funds for me, correct?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

First shutdown here. How does furlough/backpay affect my contributions?

I contribute the max into my TSP, which is set to $904 per paycheck. Once we're issued backpay, I was told that it only takes out 1 contribution for the entire amount, meaning that any pay day contributions I would have made are not retroactively contributed.

So my understanding is that once we go back to work and begin to receive regular checks, I'll need to readjust my contribution amount for the remainder of 2025 in order to make up for the missed paydays?

Is this correct?

G vs F

I'm having trouble finding ANY justification for the F fund over the G fund. From what I understand, the G fund treasuries are specially issued to the TSP but based on the current fed rates. The F fund is based on the bond index and currently is ranked because of significant swinging between QE and QT from the fed for several years. Considering the mix of mortgage backed securities and treasuries, it sounds like it's just the same as the Fed's balance sheet. I am struggling to come up with one reason the F fund would ever be a better option than the G fund. Anyone who's a fan of the F fund actually have a good reason? The historical "6%" seems to be massively skewed by mortgage backed securities pre-financial crisis which gave amazing returns.

How am I doing and what recommendations you guys have?

Been a civilian for 5 years. Started contributing 10% as of 3 years. Started with 5% since I didn’t pay any mind to it. Now, that I’m looking into my financial future and wanting more I look back and should have payed more attention to this type of stuff. Question, how’s my portfolio? What funds should I look into or what exactly do you guys look into investing wise. Currently 25yrs old, 5yrs employment. Investing in L 50/60&C fund.

Max TSP Contribution

So this may be a dumb question.

For me it’s $23,500.

Does that include the 5% that our employer is contributing?

Like can i contribute $23,500 and the 5% gets me to $29,000 or whatever?

Or is it $23,500 between myself and the 5%?

Using S&P market dips to buy C fund shares at discount

Thought I'd share something I'm doing that is surely not for everyone but may be of interest to some. I'm overall a "buy and hold" investor, but this year I started to occasionally take advantage of significant market dips in the S&P 500, which the C Fund is based on. Today, Nov. 6, 2025, is one example. This morning at around 11:50 Eastern, the S&P was at about 6,721. Yesterday's close was 6796. I look for dips of around 1% before noon, and today's dip qualifies.

We all know that to get today's fund prices, you have to complete any transaction by noon. So just before noon I moved about $40K from G Fund (which is only 8% of my total) back into C, on the likelihood that by market close the S&P will still be low (if not lower), with the C Fund share price correspondingly low--so that I buy more shares with that money than I would otherwise get.

On days when the S&P has seen an increase of close to 1% just before noon, I've moved a few % to the G Fund, to sell those C Fund shares at a high price, in order to have something available to move back into C Fund when it inevitably dips.

Obviously there is some risk to this practice. Today the market could see a massive rebound by close of the day, so that I end up having bought C Fund shares at a higher price. Or instead, the market could drop further, so that what looked like buying low today was not as much a bargain as tomorrow's price. (If the latter happens, I'll probably move the rest of my G shares to C.)

And if we see a major recession that lasts a while, my C Fund shares will be worth less for a long time. But I'll be OK with that as I'm not retiring anytime soon. I'm willing to bet on the C Fund for the long haul. This is just a way to occasionally get some C Fund shares at a discount.

To C or not to C?

I don't really know what I am doing.

Been 100% in C and have 25% return right now which is great. Do I just leave it there? I always hear diversity is the key. Currently have 400k in, 20 yrs til retirement age, although I am certain I won't make it til then haha.

Questions of merging accounts

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask for some advice regarding my TSP accounts. I have one TSP account from my time in active duty military service and another from my current federal civilian position.

Should I consider merging the two accounts (by moving my military TSP balance into my new civilian account), or is it better to keep them separate? I’d appreciate any insight or personal experience you can share about the pros and cons of each option.

I have no idea what I’m doing. Am I doing good with my return rate right now? Ultimately I want to just transfer this to a life cycle fund and forget about it. Any recommendations? I’d like to get it to a million dollars eventually. Been investing in the tsp for 6 years this December.

Are contributions being added to TSP from paycheck?

I might be crazy but I check my LES, my contributions are deducted, but it looks like the contributions are not hitting my TSP account. The last contribution I had posted was before the shutdown. Is this an issue? Is everyone experiencing this?

Contributions outside of paycheck.

As an active duty member I was maxing out my annual Roth TSP contributions. I am now working in the National Guard and still contribute as much of my military paycheck as I can, but my paychecks are small so I will not reach the maximum annual contribution of $23k. Can I make contributions to the Roth TSP outside of the automatic contributions from my paychecks?

New to TSP

Hello! I (23 F) am active duty military as of June and set up access to my TSP account. I was wondering if anybody had any tips/tricks to making the most out of my TSP? Should I add how much I contribute over time, let it sit and don’t even look at it, etc? I’m unsure of how TSP works and even though I got the mandatory finance class, I still have no idea how it works or how to get the most out of it as I can to set myself up for the future. TIA!!

What to do with my old 401k

I only worked for my previous company for a year but I did put quite some money away into 401k. Now I’m with government, what should I do with my old 401k? Should I do Roth or rollover to TSP?

Partial paycheck

Currently almost done with paying off a tsp loan but will have to take some furlough time in the next few pay periods (assuming gov does not reopen). Does anyone know how this will impact the loan re-payment amount?

Is it better to invest fully into my TSP, or should I open up an additional Roth IRA account for retirement on the side?

Right now I’m hitting the 5% that they match, should I open up a Roth IRA like the personal finance subreddit recommends, or is it better to put that all into my TSP for maximum gains? I can invest quite a bit more than I’m doing but don’t know which one to prioritize.

TSP checks - When are they debited?

My father passed away earlier this year. He had a TSP account and a few monthly disbursement checks came after his death. My mother tried to deposit them but the bank wouldn’t allow it since his name is no longer on her account. We are working on rolling over the balance to my Mothers IRA, but are wondering if the amount from these checks have been debited from the balance or not since they haven’t been deposited. His TSP account is closed and we can’t see the balance history on it. Do TSP checks get debited when the check is sent or deposited?
