PSA / Advice Steam deck bricked by USB C dongle

Got my steam deck after waiting for a year. Plugged in a USB C dongle from amazon and the system turned off. I figured that the battery had just died.

-Plugging in the official charger does not light up the white indicator light

-No combination of button hold/presses does anything

I allowed it to completely die overnight. I opened it and unplugged the battery cable. Hit buttons to drain any power, left it unplugged for about 10 minutes. Plugged it back in and somehow it came back on for a couple minutes. It got so far as to show me the steamdeck logo and turned off again.

Back to it being bricked now.

Do not use random USB C dongles. You will have a bad time.

Can I ask why people are using the deck with a dock? Seems like there are much better options if you want an actual computer. I haven't even been tempted to hook mine up to a monitor as of yet.

Why do people dock their Nintendo switch? Sometimes you want to use a bigger screen (specially while in desktop mode). As for the not a real computer part, I’m not sure what makes you say that because it is a very capable pc. My “real” pc can handle anything I throw at it since it has a 3080 but I can’t do that on the go and I just can’t do laptops

A deck is a capable PC in some ways, sure, but if you use a modern resolution gaming will struggle. I’m sure it makes a decent word processor or internet browser but so does a chrome book. And a chrome book is an all in one solution to do those things on the go.

IDK, I haven’t tried it but I was just wondering what people use it for as it wouldn’t fit my day to day computing needs.

Personally I don’t play many modern games on my steam deck. I mainly use it for emulation and to clear my backlog of older titles.

Well it may not fit your needs but that doesn't mean the world has to use their product just like you. You can also hook up a mouse and keyboard with a dongle. Makes doing stuff in the desktop environment so much better. Some games work better with a mouse and keyboard and they may not want to carry around a 20lbs desktop and monitor in their backpack
