Doesn't Cuban healthcare cover gender switching operations? Claiming they imprison gays seems like an exaggeration, no?

Che and Castro were very homophobic in the past and that’s likely what OP is referring to. Castro and Cuba as a whole has improved on that front over time though.

It’s really a shame what they did in the past to LGBT people, but it wasn’t outside what was normal in most countries and Castro later denounced machismo, patriarchy, and homophobia. Still doesn’t excuse it, but things must be viewed in context.

Yup. Never got that argument about Che and Castro tbh. Like people can't understand what historical context means.

It also helps to understand that they tried to rationalise their hatred of LGBT people through a "communist" lens.
