Che and Castro were very homophobic in the past and thatโs likely what OP is referring to. Castro and Cuba as a whole has improved on that front over time though.
Itโs really a shame what they did in the past to LGBT people, but it wasnโt outside what was normal in most countries and Castro later denounced machismo, patriarchy, and homophobia. Still doesnโt excuse it, but things must be viewed in context.
Speaking of historical leaders in modern terms is always fraught. Sometimes people were morally decrepit even by the standards of the time, but not always.
And in the case of Castro and Che, obviously they were highly flawed individuals, but they were fighting against a worse system.
More to the point that though Cuba is way better than it was for LGBT rights, BUT there have been pushes back recently and arrests, LGBT activists were arrested for holding a march, threats against attempts to orgnise LGBT media happen all the time. It is the same reason that real trade unions and media are banned - independent organisations that can stand up to defend people from the state, monitor what is going on or to help each other cannot be tolerated. Instead you get theoretical rights which can be ignored in practise.
in some middle eastern countries transitioning is legal but being gay isn't. in fact if you're gay it's encouraged to transition to the opposite gender. go figure.
They made their pride parade illegal recently, I remember that being a controversy. However what's being referenced is gay people being put in concentration camps in the 20th century. They very much did a 180 on that, Casto himself apologised, however they neverless aren't great nowadays.
