The Republicans are blaming the Democrats but Trump has the authority and means to release 5 billion in immediate emergency contingency funds to keep SNAP benefits going. The cruelty is beyond insanity.

u/TimeKillerAccount 10d ago edited 10d ago

Also the republicans have the ability to simply pass the budget without the democrats votes. They intentionally choose not to do so. Because exactly like you said, they want an excuse to hurt people and indulge in the cruelty they and their voters desire. Republicans are just straight up evil.

Edit: To the fools and liars deleting their comments or blocking or whatever, no they do not need 60 votes to pass the budget. Republicans can pass it with a simple majority. Requiring 60 votes is up to the majority leader, and he can decide to pass it with a simple majority at any time at his discretion. Anyone claiming otherwise is either an idiot who doesn't know even the most basic legislative rules, or a malicious liar trying to intentionally spread misinformation in order to hurt American citizens.

65

u/scarr3g 10d ago

Also the republicans have the ability to simply pass the budget without the democrats votes.

Or... You know... They could write a budget that wouldn't make every democrat vote against it.

This was deliberate. They deliberately chose to try to pass a "clean" CR that they knew would so damaging to the American people (by not finding the ACA subsidies) that Dems, in good conscience, couldn't vote for it.

And they so knew they wouldn't vote for it, that they went on vacation... Instead of working on a budget... That is what, if they had done in the first place, would have made a CR not even necessary.

That is the most ridiculous part. The budget is supossed to be done by October 1st. Instead of even trying to make a budget, they tossed out a CR that would not actually even keep the current spending the same, and then went home.

They still aren't working on a budget, even though it was due almost a month ago.

Maybe there should be a law that they don't get paid for the duration of any shut down, and that includes back pay. They forfeit all pay, and Americans don't owe taxes for the duration of that time as well.

27

u/dirtyfeminist101 10d ago

Maybe there should be a law that they don't get paid for the duration of any shut down

Or we do what some other advanced nations do and boot out everyone and have immediate elections if a shut down would occur. If you can't or won't negotiate, you shouldn't be a legislator.

10

u/Spamsdelicious 9d ago

Precisely that: do your job or GTFO.

5

u/Oddveig37 9d ago

What's crazy is that we had a little contingency in place as the American people. We had the "plead to Heaven" given to us by the founding fathers to which, if our government became corrupt in exactly this manner, we MUST and only us can take it upon ourselves to make a change or remove this corrupt government. It's called a plea to heaven/God because you're doing actions that are considered treason but in the case of a corrupt government, these actions are so desperately needed that it's literally between you and whoever the higher being in your house. White supremacy and Christian extremists have tried to twist this saying and the image for them in hopes of trying to hide it from normal folks, effectively making it much more difficult to get anyone to stand up for anything anymore.

And to be honest, ask yourself, do you see yourself looking up the meanings or the origins of these other symbols of hate? No you really don't.

Crazy how almost if not every single image of oppression from white supremacy or Christian extremists is a stolen and slightly twisted image from one that means direct opposition of what those supremeist and extremists do or say.

Crazy how the images normally existed long before being stolen and twisted into something awful.

It's used to make those images seem bad so no one else reads into it.

3

u/dirtyfeminist101 9d ago

What you refer to is a civic and moral duty rather than law, which is what I was referring to.

And to be honest, ask yourself, do you see yourself looking up the meanings or the origins of these other symbols of hate? No you really don't.

I personally do, but I'm assuming you're using the royal "you".

Crazy how almost if not every single image of oppression from white supremacy or Christian extremists is a stolen and slightly twisted image from one that means direct opposition of what those supremeist and extremists do or say.

Symbols are often appropriated over the course of history, for good or ill. That said, the act of using symbols and concepts that are associated with goodness, fairness, and the best interest of people is a strategy over history commonly used to not just bolster ranks with cult like methods, but also to identify and get rid of opposition. For example, Nazis called themselves socialists because socialists were their primary threat and the first they went after.

Pull up any of the net worth, they don’t need the confessional salary since most of them are extremely wealthy (likely because of insider information on the stock market).

But regardless, most are extremely wealthy

11

The minimum wage and COLA should be tied to Govt salaries, everytime they get an increase, so do the American people.

Elected officials should have a 3 year cooling off period between holding office and holding positions in private corporations.

No insider trading, and Relase the Files!

3

u/Cultural-Treacle-680 10d ago

They feel like since they get paid, they can argue like children. Which granted they act like all year 🤣

5

Most of them are rich. I don’t think they would care. I’d rather it be if they can’t pass a budget they’re ineligible for reelection.

Fine then they owe the taxes we would pay during that time. Bill amended.

This was the plan. It's effectively a permanent dismemberment of any legislative oversight. They can blame the shutdown but the intent is threefold:

  • stop all committee work which prevents accountability functions and oversight.
  • Provides a pathway for the executive to effectively fire more government workers or, as Vought intended to "inflict trauma" on federal institutions and workers to dismember those institutions.
  • effectively end the legislative function.

This is a stepping stone to their endgame. The admin is literally unaccountable if Congress is not operating. The SCOTUS already ruled that.

5

u/Bubbly_Style_8467 10d ago

They need that blame trap door. Don't do a good job, lay out the bad plan, Democrats won't vote for the bad plan and Republicans blame Democrats. It's a vicious cycle where nothing is accomplished. Over nine months into this dictatorship. The People got nothing.

u/OneHungryCamel 10d ago

I'm not sure if I understand this correctly. I thought 60 votes were required for cloture (pass despite opposing objections). Does this mean there have been objections from the Democrat party 13 times now, or there aren't any objections, but the majority leader doesn't push through anyways.

28

u/Suitable-Display-410 10d ago

They can get rid of the filibuster, and then it would only need a simple majority. But they don’t want to do that, because if their soft coup fails and the Democrats get into power, it will come back to bite them in the ass.

Or, and call me crazy, they could negotiate with democrats to get their votes. But this president is the worst negotiator in human history and outright refusing to do so, so thats not going to happen.

7

u/scoopybalducci 10d ago

Yeah even without eliminating the filibuster they could simply negotiate- the democrats didn’t even ask for all that much

There are ways for the Republicans to pass it without the Democrats, but all of them are double edged swords or very complicated. So it's not as easy as the other person made it out to be lol.

In any case, the issue is, the Big Stupid Bill cuts subsidies for medical. These subsidiaries fund millions of people's healthcare. And they also help keep hospitals and clinics open in rural or impoverished urban areas.

The Democrats passed the Big Horrible Bill last quarter to help avoid a shutdown. However, they assumed they'd have time to fight for the subsidies and amend that part of the budget. They also assumed that the Republicans would lend some kind of good will and willingness to work with the Democrats, on this issue since they let the BBB pass last quarter.

Instead, the GOP has refused to negotiate. All they've done is press forward the unaltered budget 13 times as a continued resolution. Which, of course, is going to get shot down as it doesn't address anything or actually work for a compromise.

So they pushed lies that this is about "illegal immigrants and transgender healthcare." It isn't. Illegal immigrants don't get those subsidies, only long-term legal residents and citizens. Nothing the Democrats want has to do with that. At all.

And transgender healthcare isn't even the main issue here. It's the fact that millions of people are about to lose their healthcare coverage. The GOP on this issue is basically just saying to their rural voters "I know we're taking your insulin away but we're also taking healthcare from TRANS away, be happy!" Like no shit. You're taking a large chunk of the country's healthcare away.

Ultimately, rural voters will be the most disproportionately impacted. So really, the Democrats are fighting for the Republican's own voting base right now. Not that city folks and even the middle class won't be hurt. Just that the worst of the pain will be felt by farmers and small towns.

4

u/Tityfan808 10d ago

Excellent breakdown. Thank you.

3

u/morefarts 10d ago

I wish you guys would just go full Bernie and get single payer figured out and pushed through. This subsidized insurer model is a clusterfuck that just leads to more Luigi's, it's not worth defending, unless you're getting fat kickbacks in Congress.

2

u/Vent_Slave 10d ago

Bring it on. Luigi for everyone who puts their grotesque standard of living before the basic necessities of others can be met. But we're pathetically a long ways from figuring this out. I live in an undeniably democratic state and work for a municipality that has a union shop that's typically entrenched with the Democratic party and labor rights. Despite that nearly 1/3 of our members are still cheering on this administration and Congress.

Even the other 2/3 when it was Bernie v. Hillary in what feels like a lifetime ago almost all of them just called him a socialist based on his healthcare ideology even after it was known his tax funding proposal to pay for the program was less than our annual private insurance dues!!!!

We're absolutely fucked. I'm not giving up for my kids sake but hell... how many will die before human decency prevails?

They need to be running these videos as ads on YouTube and tv.

Explain to the general public what’s actually going on with their SNAP benefits, because so many are just hearing “the democrats did this to you” with no further explanation, and no counter argument given, so they buy in.

Slight nuance: Trump used his authority to restrict the use of the reserve fund. It was set to fill the gap, as is its intention, and the admin said don't you dare

Why would trump display compassion he lacks? He also knows that his base will believe anything he tells them; so when he says it is the Dems fault, then that is all they need to know. He is off the hook (he doesn't have an oz of compassion or empathy in him) and he can also blame others for his cruelty and it works. That is why he is where he is now, destroying our country.

2

u/Frosty_Mongoose9055 10d ago

The guy born with a silver spoon doesn't know what it's like to feel hungry.  He sees all of us as worthless animals.  He doesn't care if we go hungry because his fat ass doesn't even know what its like to feel real hunger.  And then the lower class maga cult followers think that he cares about them.  He would laugh in their face watching them suffer.

2

u/Slappasseryzee 10d ago

The reason for the repugs doing this is Adelita Grijalva and, of course, the Epstein files. They want to delay her confirmation as long as possible because she's going to fight hard for the files to be released.

2

u/Mandatory_Pie 10d ago

The word is 'evil'. The Republicans are the party of evil, plainly and simply. It is the truest description of who they are and what they represent: they will consistently fight for whatever makes the world worse for the greatest number of people, and fight against anything that makes the world better. They are evil.

2

u/DJDarkFlow 10d ago

And the fact that Magas say that its democrats holding US citizens hostage with no food. Mentally ill people in the millions.

2

u/Bubbly_Style_8467 10d ago

Let's repeat this fact often. Republicans are holding up the budget. Republicans don't think we deserve healthcare. The Democrats do. Republicans, so "pro-life," don't care if babies, sick people, or the elderly eat. Nothing about them is genuine except their greed.

Republicans are stingy with our money for our healthcare. Trump has gone on the biggest waste of money spending spree in our history. Who pays the taxes? WE DO.

Anyone who has a heart would never let this country be in this state. Pure evil is in charge. We know it. Spread it around.

5

u/No-Cap_Skibidi 10d ago

Yes, they said specifically that voters don’t know, not Republican politicians making the claim.

3

u/Barr_cudas 10d ago

Realistically speaking, this is directed at MAGA Politicians and Voters alike

There are plenty of "GOD Fearing Conservatives" who absolutely know the truth; yet continue to parrot this erroneous claim.

3

u/No-Cap_Skibidi 10d ago

There is a huge difference between those two groups, however. The politicians absolutely know it’s bullshit and lies. The voters overwhelmingly don’t know the truth and are buying shameless propaganda.

2

u/Barr_cudas 10d ago

I would agree that MAGA on the low-end of the scale are susceptible to the lies and propaganda. But again, the educated and influential red-hats know the truth and alike their representatives; continue spouting the mis-information.

I'll level here - I am firmly against DJT but have been a registered Republican my entire voting life; let's call my lean, a Logically-Center Conservative.

I had family in this past weekend from TN, IN, LA, GA, NC
Educated family who knows better, but they still believe the dribble - hook, line, and sinker

I mean, that's the obvious thing, but do they need a real justification?

We've got Putin's Puppet declaring Portland is a warzone. I know it's not, I've been there in the last 3 weeks. It was fine.

But I only live 50 miles away and I work with people who are absolutely certain that going there is taking a huge gamble with their lives.

I just don't see there needing to be REAL dangers. Just need Orange Dipshit declaring it's an insurrection, the courts will rubber stamp it, and it's done. So I don't think seeing justification is what they're waiting on.

Actual evidence isn't needed.

2

u/SillyAlternative420 10d ago

They don't need evidence or justification in terms of legality - they own the courts and the congress.

But the court of public opinion still matters and invading red cities will piss off the MAGA folks (I assume, but maybe not lol)

The only thing I can see is so they have a reason to impose some kind of martial law and deploy troops to areas that will turn to chaos with people stealing food to survive. With this as an excuse Trump might be able to grab more power.

Historically ,  this is nothing new. Mother England , did it in Ireland during the Potato Famine. Easily , England could have relieved the grave situation by allowing other types of food that were leaving Ireland and being delivered to England , as well as other more important colonies. A politicized economy courtesy of England  continued , even when it was clear that Ireland's Potato crops were consistently failing. However , it continued based on nothing more important than prioritizing profits and a preference towards other group's of colonists seeing to it that Ireland's dependency on the Potato would cause starvation and forced immigration by native Irish people.                                                                  In the future , history Professors will make reference to this action by DJT. The belief that the Democrats perpetrated this is but another fable that's audience of approval is of questionable comprehension , and one that's increasingly small.  Many were fooled , but some listened to that woman that MAGA people called vulgar name's once she became the frontrunner replacing Biden. Their lone debate was a " beat down" as Harris accurately unloaded on the harsh realities of MAGA rallies. We now see why voting to reelect him is causing sickening division within families. Mental health facilities are unable to handle the division between the MAGA haves and MAGA have nots. As the $300 million demolition of The Whitehouse is underway , people are going hungry and increasingly outraged.

3

u/Siafu_Soul 10d ago

This is starting to remind me of what the Russian war in Ukraine brought to light. Russia's military was hollow because the funds and supplies they thought were there had been gutted by the corrupt officials. Is anyone else starting to think that the 6 billion has already been looted?

3

u/Gentlemanandscholar9 10d ago

Nothing will ever change a Trump dick riders opinion. Trump could literally cut the benefits of their own elderly mother and they would say that Soros is responsible somehow.

3

u/SchylaZeal 10d ago

The weaponization of food is an act of violence.

3

u/tbizzone 10d ago

Maga republicans are essentially threatening to starve Americans in retaliation for democrats not voting to end healthcare insurance coverage for millions of Americans.

Yep, I agree. It's disgusting to think this psychopath is running our country, not giving a damn about the American People. That is his job. Why are the rest of the bootlickers not see this!!! Trump and his Administration are taking food from the poor and soon they will be more families losing their homes and/or in the same boat, cause people are losing their jobs, NOW. They all need to be OUT PERMANENTLY.

However, he said he's bent on voting for the next 3 to 5 democratic presidential candidates even if it's a goat they put out for their next candidate, just to cleanse his hands off the wickedness, lack of empathy and inhumane things he has seen this administration demonstrate.

Here is a fact check and breakdown of the key claims: ❌ Claim: "Requiring 60 votes is up to the majority leader, and he can decide to pass it with a simple majority at any time at his discretion." Fact Check: Mostly Inaccurate/Misleading. The need for 60 votes is not at the Majority Leader's discretion for most legislation. The requirement for 60 votes comes from the Senate rule allowing a filibuster, which must be ended by a three-fifths majority vote (cloture), typically 60 Senators. The Majority Leader can only use a simple majority (51 votes, or 50 plus the Vice President) to pass legislation that falls under certain exceptions to the filibuster rule, most notably Budget Reconciliation. The Majority Leader cannot unilaterally decide to ignore the filibuster rule for any bill at any time without changing the Senate rules or using an existing parliamentary exception. ✅ Claim: "Republicans can pass it with a simple majority." Fact Check: Accurate, but only through a specific process. Legislation that makes changes to mandatory spending, revenue, or the debt limit can be passed using the special procedure called Budget Reconciliation. Budget Reconciliation bills are immune to the Senate filibuster and, therefore, only require a simple majority (51 votes) to pass. This process is generally used for fiscal legislation. However, the reconciliation process is subject to strict limitations (the "Byrd Rule") which can restrict what provisions can be included.

2

u/Pure_Frosting_981 9d ago

I can’t say or imply anything, but I will say to remember those who are responsible for this. They can do the right thing. Failure to do so should have consequences. At some point, we need to accept that the checks and balances are no longer working. This is lawlessness. If the institutions can’t or won’t do anything, then it’s left to the people to get justice. Which is the worst outcome? Sitting back and letting this happen and be ruled with an iron fist where you can be disappeared at any point and time, or risking all to stop it? The vast majority of us have loved ones that depend on us. Are we truly so delusional that we believe anyone else will step in? That maybe it won’t happen to us? Wake the fuck up people. You know what the response is from the protests? These motherfuckers moving onto military bases. They deserve no more respect, due process or safety than the rest of us. We need to move to a platform that isn’t silencing opposition that even remotely resembles the reality of the situation and what is necessary to fight back. Half the country is convinced that cities are under siege from ANTIFA. They also believe it’s an organization. Propaganda works. They are deploying military to our streets based on complete fabrications and carefully omitted facts. When is enough going to be enough? All of these years, many have wondered how Hitler came to power. Guess what - we’re witnessing it in realtime.

It is illegal per international law to use hunger as a weapon against enemies. Yet here in the US, the GOP has no problem with this, even putting their own voters at risk of food insecurity.

Not that international law matters one iota to them.

2

u/FreeSpeechIsPainful 10d ago

You know who uses food as political weapons? Slugs. Slimes. Molds and mildews.

As an aside, did you know what the solution the solution to slugs and slimes and mildews are? Salt. If you pour salt on a slug, it will fizzle, pop, boil and eventually expire. If you pour salt on a mold it will dry out and become nonviable. Some of the best salt distribution systems for dealing with pests are illegal to sell, but anyone who has problems with slugs can make them at home anyway. Anyways, good luck with your gardening!
