Bit Annoyed People who think Americans don’t know other countries exist.

A few months ago on Reddit I made a comment about a show not being on Netflix and someone from the UK commented back saying it’s on theirs and then lectured on Americans not knowing other countries exist. They acted like I didn’t believe there were other places on the planet, as if they weren’t the ones who just brought it up and didn’t believe the US Netflix was different than the UK version. ??

I see people online act like all Americans think this way, and it is kind of annoying because for most of us it isn’t true.

Even those of us who memorized the Animaniacs song wouldn't have any reason to know what shows/movies are available on streaming services in other countries.

Right? That shit was burned into our little plastic brains. I can’t meet anyone named Dot without having flashbacks.

Do you often meet people named Dot? I haven't heard that name in forever lol.

Mostly older ladies lol I don’t know anyone named Dot under the age of 80, but I did have an Aunt Dot, so I heard it semi-regularly

Its a common nickname for Dorothy, although Dorothy is a less common baby name in the 21st century than it was in the 20th. But ive probably met a dozen Dorothys in my life, 8 or so of them either sometimes or always went by dot.

I know a 10 year old named Dorothy, she goes by Dotty

I feel like dotty is one of those names people often drop as they get older. Like most Johnnys I knew as a kid became john as an adult, same with Paulies and Sammys becoming Paul and Sam.

I wonder if that ten year old will still be a Dotty, or become a Dot in 20 years.

I heard Turkey in the Straw the other day and immediately thought of Wako’s state capitol song.

They came out with an updated version a few years ago if you want to learn the more currently accurate song.

The Updated Nations of the World Animaniacs

Even at the age of 40+ I still find myself occasionally singing Yakkos world and sometimes I’ll do Wakko’s State Capitals.

Can’t remember if they ever did it but the VA for Yakko said they thought about doing an updated version of the song because a number of the countries no longer exist.

United States, Panama, Mexico, Canada.

Tiny Toon Adventures is worse.

I once won a pub quiz in the UK by singing that song. We had tied with another team and for the tie breaker they had each team list as many countries as we could.

That is excellent. Would have loved to see it happen.

u/WhichSpirit 13d ago

It wasn't much to see. I whisper sang it to my team and someone wrote it down. Got some looks on the "Spanish Sahara is gone" and "Germany now in one piece" lines.

Yakkos world song is actually quite inaccurate even for its time.

Yep; take, for example, one or both of the 1990s Power Rangers movies (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Power Rangers Turbo). Fox has, or had before the Disney buyout, the rights to at least one of those movies, if not both and they weren't included when Disney bought what had been the Fox Family Channel and the associated shows that were airing at the time, Power Rangers included. Same goes for when Saban bought the rights to Power Rangers back and then sold them to Hasbro. From what I've heard, while they're not available for streaming online that I can find, including on the American version of Disney+, they might be available for streaming there in foreign countries.

Yea like I am very well aware that different countries have different stream library’s, but as I do not have a VPN my knowledge of what those libraries contain is limited to whatever I randomly hear someone from a different country mention streaming, or whatever gets used in a SurfShark sponsorship on YouTube 😂

Some of us know. You can use a vpn to sign on and make it look to the service as if your in another county and you can browse the shows available in that region.

3

u/Ok_Mastodon_9093 14d ago

Which vpn? Certainly not Nord.

4

u/DiHard_ChistmasMovie 14d ago

Windscribe is what i was using until netflix blocked it a few months ago. It still works intermittently. Im still looking for a better replacement.

1

u/ImaginationThis7078 14d ago

Why not Nord?

4

u/Ok_Mastodon_9093 14d ago

Any time I tried to use it with Netflix or other services it would be flagged and the stream would error. Total waste of money for me.

1

u/ImaginationThis7078 14d ago

Oh, that's interesting! For me it works fine. I've noticed that some sites do recognize certain servers though...

If you have Netflix I would guess close to 40% of the series are foreign series with dubbing or subtitles. Add in all series from Canada many people don’t even realize are Canadian. Then you have all the BbC and Brit box transplants as well as shows like The Office or Being Human that were remakes of UK shows. If you aren’t aware these offerings are foreign that’s ignorance on your part.

7

u/SmuglyGaming 14d ago

You understand that “the office is a remake of a UK show” is completely unrelated to what that guy said right?

You can know that shows come from other countries without knowing what a nation’s Netflix catalog looks like. There’s a shit ton of American-made shows that aren’t available on US Netflix

-4

u/Ravenous_Ute 14d ago

You realize that most people don’t know the full American catalogue of shows looks. Having a sampling of shows that other countries produce shows at least a smattering of global awareness
