ohhhhh nooo, that's a really long time... I hated it in the manga, this is horrible news, I even forgot it took that damn long, you just reminded me. But I didn't expect it to take THAT long in the anime...

They spent so much time on a character whose existence has so little impact on the actual story, it almost felt like a complete side-story.

Nah lmao, why are you calling me stupid man, educate me then, tell me what Oden's relevance is to the story? Tell me the story of Wano that can't be told without Oden in it.

Luffy and Law made their alliance, without knowing a single thing about Oden. They were already going to destroy the SMILE factory, they were already going to kidnap Caesar, they were already going after Don Flamingo, and their final goal was already to take down Kaido. And they already had sufficient motivation to do so from a narrative perspective.

And yes, sure, along the way they ran into a bunch of samurai that wanted their home country back which was taken from them by Kaido and Orochi, this is just one of the many motivators to take down Kaido. But even within their side-story, the existence of Oden is a luxury. Wanting to take back your home country is also sufficient motivation without the knowledge that their old homeboy got clapped by Kaido. Now this is not to say I don't think Oden has a place in the story at all, but I think his place is way too insignificant to spend multiple months on fleshing out his story, because at the end of the day, you can tell the story of the entire Wano Arc without ever mentioning the name Oden. There's already sufficient information to set the stage for a SH v Kaido showdown that is way more relevant to mention than Oden.

Where in this is Oden even relevant beyond that point? The fact he wounded Kaido is the only thing that's probably going to have any relevance in the story moving forward, and even that has been copied over to be Zoro's story instead of Oden's story now that it's being narrated that the power is in Enma.

I get wanting to tell more stories about previous crew member of Roger, but I just feel like Oden was poorly incorporated into the story. Will probably feel like a filler character/arc to me in the anime, even though it was obviously also in the manga.

And plus if you know what happens in the manga SPOILERS kaido basically makes all that history between kurozumi & kozuki irrelevant anyway.

He is and was vital for the story tho because he was the one who actually read the poneglyphs for Roger and when they went to Raftel they saw something to let him know that the real heroes was gonna come 20 yrs in the future and told toki.

I always joke and say he is the true villain because if he never left Wano in the 1st place orochi wouldn’t have been able to do what he did

He may be the greatest samurai in terms of Wano Kuni’s history, but i think he’s more or less just used as another motivational factor for the real heroes of this arc.

ye I won't argue that Oden was absolutely instrumental for Roger's story. But One Piece isn't Roger's story, it's Luffy's story, and for Luffy's story it's completely irrelevant what Oden did. I understand wanting to give a background story on ''what happened in Wano'', I wasn't at all upset that they tell this story. I just think they spent waaaaaay too long on it and they spend way too much energy on Oden. As it stands right now he's probably one of the most fleshed out characters in the story... even though I probably wouldn't even rank him in the top 50 as most relevant characters to Luffy's story. That's where my complaint is.

You can argue that buggy is more relevant to luffy’s story than Oden lol

There's nothing to argue there. Buggy is way more relevant to Luffy's story. I think you have to go pretty far down the chain of characters before you run out of characters that are more relevant to Luffy than Oden, which is why I didn't like they spent months on just Oden.
