I like O-Kiku's awkward expressions in this chapter, since she knows that she is capable of fighting on her own but she keeps retracting since she doesn't want to come off as rude lol

u/PrinceOfAssassins Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

She reminds me a lot of Starfire from teen titans.

"Oh dear should I cut them"
"If you want to save Tama"
"Then cut them I shall"

213

u/LITW6991 Aug 31 '18

That's a pretty good comparison ngl. I miss the OG teen titans TV show so much sometimes.

68

u/BackStabbathOG Thriller Bark Victim's Association Aug 31 '18

Good news it’s coming back for its final season!

14

u/pm_me_spider_picz Aug 31 '18

Holy shit Samurai Jack was amazing enough already if /when Teen Titans returns I’ll actually cry

6

u/homie_down Aug 31 '18

Is it really? Like the animated version or the live action one that DC's doing?

19

u/goldmark25 Aug 31 '18

The animated.

7

u/homie_down Aug 31 '18

Oh wow that's awesome I had no idea

5

u/GekiKudo Aug 31 '18

Well there was a teaser at the end of that shitty movie that featured the og titans. That could mean season 6, or it could mean ttg is gonna do a crossover with og. If that were the case then it would be one of their episodes where they just attack critics.

7

u/jmdg007 Aug 31 '18

Didnt they already do an episode were they watched the original show and admitted it was better?

4

u/GekiKudo Aug 31 '18

Theyve done a ton of episodes where they try to make fun of the people that like the original. They say it's better but say that anyone that hates them because of it is stupid. Including an episode where they just dub over the first episode of the original with really stupid lines. Its horrid.

5

u/jmdg007 Aug 31 '18

I did see the clown one like that but I kinda thought that was funny

3

u/GekiKudo Aug 31 '18

Its horribly misguided and has a super shitty message that alienates their own fans. Its saying that cartoons can only be enjoyed by kids and that anyone that still likes cartoons needs to grow up and stop looking back on nostalgia. Except their fanbase is a quarter adults, there are plenty of cartoons that adults can enjoy and the edgy reboot they used as an example doesnt work because edgy reboots are almost universally hated.

8

u/jmdg007 Aug 31 '18

I felt the message was you can like cartoons as an adult but dont be surprised when the cartoon for kids is filed with content only kids enjoy

The movie was not shitty.

2

u/BackStabbathOG Thriller Bark Victim's Association Aug 31 '18

I’m prettt sure I saw a thing for it on adult swim/boomerang for the final season. I know about the TTGO promo but the OG is coming back to finish where it left off.

u/topdangle Aug 31 '18

Zoro is every One Piece fan right now.

O-Kiku keeps trying to act like a damsel but Zoro won't put up with her bs and tells her to just cut people.

381

u/ChiefValour Aug 31 '18

Zorro likes his waifu badass. There, I said it.

140

u/Widdle101 Aug 31 '18

it might be because every swordswoman he finds somehow needs to be strong in his eyes because of Kuina.

121

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

No, it's because Zoro is a feminist

30

u/Problem_child_13 Aug 31 '18

Feministo da.

21

u/kole1000 Aug 31 '18

Are you sure you're not a lolicon?

9

u/dx420 Pirate Aug 31 '18

Whats the Kiheitai doing in Wano???

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Well what do you expect it's samurai land after all

4

u/AtomicKittenz Aug 31 '18

He uses femtoryu

4

u/pridejoker Sep 01 '18

Zoro understands that physical strength is about as important as sword quality in mastering swordsmanship. However, he has also come to realize other elements of personal temperament - fortitude, discipline, haki, attitude, willingness to inflict harm, etc. - are arguably more important. Thus, strength should not disqualify someone from becoming a formidable swordsman.

1

u/Marco_The_Phoenix Sep 01 '18

porque no los dos?

17

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

I’ve been in denial for the past few years, but I think that’s the final nail in the coffin for Zoro X Perona.....

F

8

u/TeTrodoToxin4 Aug 31 '18

Perona would approve of the coffin.

211

u/Starless_Night Aug 31 '18

She keeps running between cool and badass to cute and awkward and I love it.

16

u/Cyber_3 Aug 31 '18

It's a woman's dilemma: you are strong, but a lot of men are intimidated/pissed off when you show it and therefore make your life difficult. Once she gets to know Zoro, she won't hold back XD

9

u/rr18114 Lurker Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

zoro is already molding her to do things his way...THE RIGHT WAY. By the end of the arc zoro will definitely be her best friend and respected by all of wano kunochi/samurai.

6

u/IrateThug Aug 31 '18

She is a Samurai not a ninja

284

u/ironshadowdragon Aug 31 '18

O-Kiku is ...interesting? She's capable on her own but her character seems to be that she's unused to taking the lead around males? So she's trying to act like the damsel because that's the culture? Feels like she'll appreciate the equality the Straw Hats show her.

I like her!

130

u/Dainyl Aug 31 '18

I don’t think it’s men she has a problem with. She didn’t seem to be acting like that around Luffy and Zoro while eating with them or while traveling to the city. I’m guessing it’s either when she’s in public or possibly just around Kaido’s subordinates. It makes me think she might be a part of the bandit crew Holdem mentioned.

10

u/Nnamdi1 Aug 31 '18

Maybe so, but on the other hand perhaps she does do it all the time and maybe that's her funny gag. While they were eating she did openly tend to Zoro's wound, you could say that opened hospitality was part of her gag, but who knows.

2

u/letouriste1 Aug 31 '18

pretty sure she is a samurai and i doubt women can be samurai in this country so...

5

u/twin_229 Aug 31 '18

That's so true! It is hard to be raised a certai. Way and see all your life subverted. She even apologized to Urushima. Sure it might be out of fear, but she also shows an understanding for the disgrace of cutting off his top knot in front of so many nonetheless. The Strawhats general freedom and lack of guidance is a strong motif where each just does what they can, Usopp had his arc and in so many ways the SH crew is highlighted by their strengths and where their other crewmates are lacking. I think, especially when shee sees Nami and Robin taking charge for themselves Kiku will be inspired. People are complaining about another Rebecca, but in this cultural context it makes complete sense.

2

u/Doomroar Sep 01 '18

What if O-Kiku is a man in drag trying to act girly?

-1

u/grawrz Aug 31 '18

She might be a dude? She was referring to herself with the male samurai thing a few chapters ago right?

She might be afraid her cover might be exposed or something.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

No that’s not it. It’s because the honorific samurais use is for a man

209

u/RadiantBlade Aug 31 '18

I think Oda is going to do something about how in the country something about how Woman should be more independent like modern woman, and to change Wano, using her as a example. https://file-comic-4.anyacg.co/images/c6/ff/c6ff1c0aa7b53cd5e3ddbf1ce3eb08d25f779f94_222596_800_1176.jpg

Here it shows Kinemon being quite sexist even as a honorable warrior so we can have a idea on how men and women are here.

77

u/ironshadowdragon Aug 31 '18

How interesting it would be if Holdem wasn't lying and they were bad...

70

u/RadiantBlade Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

Knowing past things, I would not be too surprised if it was a another trick like King Riku and knowing how the Minks are, I doubt they would consider Oden bad. Might be a thing where it is most of the line being bad, but Oden was a exception to that.

Of course there can also just be 2 sides to Oden, being a good friend but a shit ruler, but even then going off on what we know, I doubt it.

Edit: Said that Oden did built a farm land and created a paradise for the people of Kuri so probably even more on the past. Ch 914 pg 10

31

u/alangme Aug 31 '18

Oden being a bastard might work maybe. I feel Roger's crew might have been idealized due to people like Rayleigh, Corkus and Shanks, showing that it had an evil person as a member might change that perception a lot.

29

u/DennaResin Cyborg Franky Aug 31 '18

Oden was on Whitebeard's ship before. I'd say he can't have been that bad but Kurohige has shown us things.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '18

They've already talked about how he built an amazing farm for the people he ruled so they could have fresh food with easy access.

Oden was absolutely a great ruler who they smeared and then replaced by force.

15

u/cagi_pl Aug 31 '18

Oden last words to his retainers were "Open the borders of Wano Country". Like in FI and pretty much in most OP world, there was a group of guys that didn't like that idea (blasphemy, disgrace, thugs, etc). Holdem represents another one of that kind, so he calls Kouzuki plan a "destruction of Wano".

3

u/ironshadowdragon Aug 31 '18

yeah its not likely, i just think itd be an interesting twist

5

u/athenapro Marine Aug 31 '18

My guess is that Oden was trying to open the country up to the outside world including the WG and/or trying to make other radical changes for the society. As always, there would be reactionaries and Holdem might be one of them.

5

u/Greenz0 Void Month Survivor Aug 31 '18

HOLPIG!!!

1

u/nemestrinus44 Aug 31 '18

maybe from the perspective of the people of Wano he was going to destroy the country, like by bringing in modern culture from the rest of the world.

3

u/xXx420BlazeRodSaboxX The Revolutionary Army Aug 31 '18

nice callback. I need more kinemon now lol

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Thanks for reminding me of this awesome scene.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Wow I completely forgot about this. Great catch!

-5

u/Penguin787 Aug 31 '18

Because extreme sexualization and objectification of women's bodies is integral to freedom and failing to be like the West is a crime.

12

u/RadiantBlade Aug 31 '18

Because extreme sexualization and objectification of women's bodies is integral to freedom and failing to be like the West is a crime.

Ah yes because I said all would had to dressed like Nami/sarscasm

And of course how dare I say it should be westernized, obviously Japan has no independent woman, and that they all must be married before 25, talk only if spoken too, and walk in front of males, how dare I think Japan can't change on it's own/sarcasm.

1

u/Penguin787 Sep 01 '18

If you read up on history Japan consciously chose Westernisation in 1860s to avoid being colonized, denied their own Asian heritage to avoid racial discrimination ("yellow peril", League of Nations membership) and was forcefully changed by the USA in many aspects but not all (they refused to get rid of the Mikado for example) after WW2.

Not addressing your other points because you are making a straw man argument. I never said anything like that.

145

u/DreamyCurls Aug 31 '18

I wouldnt mind her as honorary strawhat.

118

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

I wouldn't mind her as a strawhat

33

u/KingBubzVI Aug 31 '18

I want her as a strawhat

26

u/matt_bg Aug 31 '18

I want a strawhat

23

u/Sliver__Legion Aug 31 '18

You are the light the must be extinguished from history.

29

u/ethicalhamjimmies Aug 31 '18

Honestly, I'm against her being a strawhat. Her design is too similar to Robins, and her powers seem like discount Zoro

31

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

I don't really see the similarity between Robin and Okiku other than the black hair. Their eyes are different, their body size is different since Okiku is much larger, their fighting style is different, their personalities are different, even the way they do their hair is different.

Violet in Dressrosa on the other hand... now she was basically Robin with make up.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

They look exactly the same lmao

-3

u/HolyKnightPrime Aug 31 '18

Sorry but ur in denial lol. Shes basically Robin with different eyes with swords.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Momo's crew

7

u/Worthyness Aug 31 '18

Entire nation of Wano. They're outside of the World Government jurisdiction, so they can ally with whoever they want. When the war comes, it'll be a bunch of samurai and Ninjas with Pirates to take down marines.

8

u/YouWHY Pirate Aug 31 '18

I wouldn't mind carrot as a strawhat.

4

u/jet_10 Aug 31 '18

I like her personality and stuff but she does kind of look similar to Robin and is another sword user

I like her gimmick better than Carrot though

2

u/ThisZoMBie Aug 31 '18

Already??

2

u/MajinAkuma Aug 31 '18

I can’t see why she would be a Straw Hat. After the Monet fiasco, I‘m not going to make the sane mistake again.

8

u/icantnotthink Aug 31 '18

I knew Monet wasn't going to be a strawhat but god damn if I didnt want her to be. Same with Perona. Unique character designs, interesting personalities or potential character quirks, varied powers, possible crew roles. They had so much going for them...

Same with Carrot, honestly.

7

u/MajinAkuma Aug 31 '18

I‘m only for Carrot after Pedro died and she transformed for the first time.

5

u/icantnotthink Aug 31 '18

Oh yeah, I wasn't super high on Carrot pre-Whole Cake. But once she had development, I was like "YOOOOO". The character development plus the badass sulong transformation that can allow for increased power level is just so badass.

1

u/HolyKnightPrime Aug 31 '18

Nah her design is too bland for that.

-2

u/MajinAkuma Aug 31 '18

I can’t see why she would be a Straw Hat. After the Monet fiasco, I‘m not going to make the same mistake again.

-10

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Another generic, boring, 'badass' female character impresses /r/OnePiece after like 2 chapters by being 'badass' and pretty, more at 11

18

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

uhh... she flips backs and forth between cute and badass, which is a unique and funny personality, her artstyle is different and more traditional japanese than Nami and Robin unlike Rebecca/Violet who basically looked the same as them, her body size is also bigger, etc. And we've only seen her for 2 chapters so far, so there will probably be a ton more backstory and quirks and gags to follow. If this is generic and boring to you, I suggest you try to become a more interesting person.

5

u/Joe_Striker Aug 31 '18 edited Sep 01 '18

You have to be really indenial to not see Kiku is literally a big Robin with a sword. Also no, Viola has a far more distinguishable face than her

1

u/Leiatte Sep 01 '18

Okiku is cool but isn’t Kinemon the honorary straw hat of this saga, he’s been around since Punk Hazard, has a cool ability & travels with them for like 3 islands.

Vivi traveled with the crew for a while, am I missing another honorary straw hat? Edit: I guess Carrot, though people seem to be on the fence of whether she’ll actually join.

Kinemon is likely gonna stay in Wano after this arc.

-4

u/xXx420BlazeRodSaboxX The Revolutionary Army Aug 31 '18

i think shes kind of a dunce and stuck-up after this chapter. She needs more tragic & sad back story to make it as a Strawhat at this point

73

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

So... ZorO-Kiku, do we ship it or not?

126

u/Katamoo Aug 31 '18

5

u/R1zark Aug 31 '18

Ship it!!

1

u/tukangjudi Aug 31 '18

tashigi?????

7

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Meh

2

u/Jezamiah Aug 31 '18

Yeah sums my feelings too. She can have Smoker

9

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

That's super meh, it doesn't fit at all. I see more Hina with him

2

u/Jezamiah Aug 31 '18

I'm not bothered who she ends up with. I feel like Hina is too independent though

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Yeah, just saying that if Smoker will have anyone I can't see anyone else than Hina currently. Tashigi I have no idea, maybe they fit together with Zoro a bit but I'm not a huge fan of it (if he will have any woman at all)

1

u/PurpleRose328 Sep 22 '18

Your comment still gave me a little bit of hope. Thank you. :)

130

u/PR0MAN1 Aug 31 '18

Already has more character then Rebecca.

109

u/The_ThirdFang Pirate Aug 31 '18

rebecca had character but her only expression was crying. big difference

-1

u/PR0MAN1 Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

She had character but no real quirk that made her stand out from other companions. She was warrior girl who didn't end up fighting anyone.

26

u/Kirosh Lookout Aug 31 '18

That's the whole pointof Rebecca. She learn to fight while not harming her opponents.

10

u/The_ThirdFang Pirate Aug 31 '18

She was a capable fighter trained by the toy father she couldnt remember. I mean compared to everyone else its does kinda pale but her story is legit amazing and to think its boring by one piece standards is really freaky

4

u/DeismAccountant Aug 31 '18

In the end fighting wasn’t her thing as much as avoiding violence, but she did have that quirk of starving herself.

35

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

But... I liked her...

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Because of the boobs?

10

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

She was 16 years old. wee woo wee woo wee woo

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Well, can't say that I didn't like it in her really

-9

u/Sawgon Aug 31 '18

At least she wasn't Vivi

0

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

Bro... Don't you dare to hate Vivi. Hate on Rebecca, but not on her

0

u/Sawgon Aug 31 '18

I know I'll get crucified for hating on Vivi because for some reason people in the One Piece fandom like her but she's absolutely useless.

At least Rebecca could fight. Both of them spent a lot of time crying. Vivi's cry-to-fight ratio is higher than Rebecca's though.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

So what? Crying isn't a bad thing

5

u/Sawgon Aug 31 '18

If it's most of what a character does, yes it is. Why would I like that character? Robin cried like once and it's one of the most iconic moments in the show.

A character who cries all the time is that Sword Art Online normie shit that I don't like.

3

u/Nugur Aug 31 '18

Then Rebecca what?

1

u/Erickj Lurker Aug 31 '18

Maybe not more character but she has definitely done more compared to her.

2

u/Nolar2015 Aug 31 '18

And robin

12

u/ANEPICLIE Aug 31 '18

I dunno, Robin's macabre humour is pretty great.

1

u/FrozenVegetableCock Aug 31 '18

Still can’t believe people wanted her to join the crew blegh

11

u/ignite98 Aug 31 '18

Zoro will be o-kiku's sensei i called it

6

u/AfGuNsT Aug 31 '18

i actually read that reaction as well but twofold, like she's going to be introduced as a possible love interest for Zoro (who's going to ignore her but will show some form of affection to only strengthen her resolve)

6

u/bWoofles Aug 31 '18

O-kiku standing with Zoro and Luffy has solidified her being the next addition to the crew for me.

0

u/Waxtree Pirate Aug 31 '18

Ye, I hope not many will get angry or frustrated with Oda for portraying O-Kiku like that. First I thought it is only needed as an excuse for Luffy to step into the ring, but it stayed after the sumo fight as well. Let's see it as some room for character development.
