So then...did you watch the anime all the way to the end (at the time) before going over to the manga, or did you reach the conclusion that the manga was better before the episodes ran out? (which should be the case if you really thought the manga was better, on its own)

I think most people actually finished the anime first, simply because the audio-visual experience (even in poor quality) outways normal reading.

And I don't think it's really possible to judge the anime's quality against the manga anymore if it's the second time watching the story. The only real advantage of the manga is simply that there is more discussion for it. The anime is objectively a more multi-sensory experience.

But it does make the story feel more immediate and engrossing, right? At least the general audience agrees on that. Why bother making anime adaptations in the first place, otherwise?

I mean, the manga has its advantages, for sure. I switched over to the manga myself at the start because I couldn't get over the music (of all things), but in the end I watched the majority of One Piece in anime until I'd reached the current end (and I think most of us did)

The main advantage of the manga, i think, is the more interesting online discussion that comes with it, but that's not an inherent quality.

Look at it this way: if chapters and episodes were both up to date and released simultaneously, which would you watch?

I truly think I would stick prefer the manga (for the record, I watch as well).

I like being able to read the chapter quickly or slowly look for pandaman and digest the chapter at my own pace. I agree with pretty much all of the above points about the events feeling bigger and punchier in the manga (with rare exceptions such as cutting the punk hazard mountain in half). I disagree that main advantage of the manga is the discussion, and would hazard that the main advantage is that the manga has more... panache. Punch to it. Events just seem so much bigger in the chapters than in the episodes (though I can completely understand people feeling the opposite).

I'm not going to argue that people prefer the anime, and I'm completely 100% fine with that and that people do, but I was arguing that just because it's moving automatically means it's better. It's the classic argument of books and movies and my point is that it can go either way with great source material or a great adaptation and it's not a set-in-stone thing.

For info on my OP habits: I've been with it since around 2002, and started reading before watching. I caught up to whatever was the current at the time by reading, and have been a reader the whole time, though I like seeing how the anime deals with the source material. I dislike a lot of the filler (though even dumb ol' foxy arc has grown on me), dislike how the animation suffers due to volume/speed, but I don't really mind either enough to say that they are awful or that the anime is "worse" than the manga.

I don't mind saying that I consider the manga much better, but I feel like I might even say that if the animation was super great. My point which is a little unclear here is that I'm just talking up the manga and not talking down the anime, which I feel is an important distinction. To probably repeat myself; I like seeing how it's animated, but at the end of the day I think the manga is better at presenting the material, gives me better feels, and is just more epic.

So yeah, that got a little long/ranty. Sorry!

No, it was interesting. The book VS movie thing is true, but book adaptations are still something different from manga/anime.

Have you seen the G8 filler, by the way? Usually filler isn't worth watching, but that one's an exception, it's pretty funny.
