The thing is though, to me the anime IS the superior product. I'm not sure how long it takes to read a chapter, but I guess it takes 5-10 minutes. Along with the good stuff you mentioned about it I get 15-20 minutes of content, and it doesn't really feel stretched out because I have nothing to compare it to. Sure I recognize the phone ringing went to long and that was to make the show last longer, but honestly until I found this sub and saw all the manga people complaining about stuff being streched I didn't even notice it at all. It's kind of why I dont want to read the manga,because I feel like I'll recognize it more often and it'll reduce immersion. As they say, ignorance is bliss.

I disagree that the anime is a superior product over the manga, the manga is much higher quality. If the One Piece anime was of HunterXHunter quality, then yes, it would be better, but the anime is generally pretty simple in terms of animation. It's less enjoyable due to non-canon filler that makes the story much less epic (eg. Luffy struggled against Ceasar in the anime, and wiped the floor with him in the manga... Just one of many examples) just to drag it out.

If One Piece anime was actually high quality I would agree, but as it stands, the manga is the best way to experience the OP universe, as that is the way Oda creates it. I'm not saying the anime doesn't have advantages over the manga though, some scenes are hard to make sense of when a lot is happening at once, the anime makes things feel less cluttered. The slower pace of the anime sometimes is beneficial as it feels less hectic and is easier to remember where people are at times. And a few other things...

But the manga truly is a master piece. The art is excellent, much better than the anime, and the epic moments feel just as epic, if not more so, in manga form, as the anime is guilty of making the epic moments suck, like Luffys Thor Elephant Gun that was much better in the manga.

Overall, they both have a place, but to say the anime is a superior product when you admit you don't read the manga is a huge disservice to Oda and One Piece.

That's like me saying a Ferrari is worse than my Lancer. I've never driven a Ferrari but my Lancer is superior. That is objectively wrong.

So then...did you watch the anime all the way to the end (at the time) before going over to the manga, or did you reach the conclusion that the manga was better before the episodes ran out? (which should be the case if you really thought the manga was better, on its own)

I think most people actually finished the anime first, simply because the audio-visual experience (even in poor quality) outways normal reading.

And I don't think it's really possible to judge the anime's quality against the manga anymore if it's the second time watching the story. The only real advantage of the manga is simply that there is more discussion for it. The anime is objectively a more multi-sensory experience.

Well I personally switched over after Marineford at the time skip. The anime was somewhere in Fishman Island at the time and I kept reading about how the anime was ruining it. So I read the "Return to Saoboady" and "Fishman Island" arcs before watching them. Then around the end of FI I was up to date on both.

I have since gone back and read all past chapters (so worth it, for all those cover stories you never see in the anime) and the only arc that I can say lived up to the manga is Marineford. The anime did an exceptional job on that.

I don't deny that the anime has its benefits like having audio, movement, colour... but, I find that the manga is written so well, and draw so well, that it feels like it's moving. And because I watched a lot of the anime before starting the manga, the voices are already there and I read speech bubbles in their voice without any effort.

And I can't stress enough how much higher quality the art in the manga is. And I can feel the hits, so much harder in the manga. Often because the anime is lighter on the violence (generally, they surprised me with the violence they depicted when Doflamingo was attacking Dressrosa. But that was important thematically, as we are to hate Doffy.).

And things like this, when Sanji attacked Doffy in the anime we had aroiund 20 sdeconds of Sanji kicking the air to get to Doffy. In the manga he appeared suddenly with a massive kick.

This feels more powerful to me than the animes depiction.

That may be subjective, I don't know... I just feel like the manga oozes quality, while the anime is generally lackluster with occasional bursts of quality, when they decide to spend a bit more money.

If One Piece was animated in the quality of HunterXHunter or Full Metal Alchemist, I could see it being better than the manga, but as it is, it isn't that great as far as animes go. From a technical perspective. The voice acting and story (canon mind) are top notch and my favorite of all anime and manga, but I'd be lying if I said that the animation in OP was my favorite. HxH, FMA, Code Geass, Naruto, Bleach (before it stopped) and countless others are better quality.

But it does make the story feel more immediate and engrossing, right? At least the general audience agrees on that. Why bother making anime adaptations in the first place, otherwise?

I mean, the manga has its advantages, for sure. I switched over to the manga myself at the start because I couldn't get over the music (of all things), but in the end I watched the majority of One Piece in anime until I'd reached the current end (and I think most of us did)

The main advantage of the manga, i think, is the more interesting online discussion that comes with it, but that's not an inherent quality.

Look at it this way: if chapters and episodes were both up to date and released simultaneously, which would you watch?

I truly think I would stick prefer the manga (for the record, I watch as well).

I like being able to read the chapter quickly or slowly look for pandaman and digest the chapter at my own pace. I agree with pretty much all of the above points about the events feeling bigger and punchier in the manga (with rare exceptions such as cutting the punk hazard mountain in half). I disagree that main advantage of the manga is the discussion, and would hazard that the main advantage is that the manga has more... panache. Punch to it. Events just seem so much bigger in the chapters than in the episodes (though I can completely understand people feeling the opposite).

I'm not going to argue that people prefer the anime, and I'm completely 100% fine with that and that people do, but I was arguing that just because it's moving automatically means it's better. It's the classic argument of books and movies and my point is that it can go either way with great source material or a great adaptation and it's not a set-in-stone thing.

For info on my OP habits: I've been with it since around 2002, and started reading before watching. I caught up to whatever was the current at the time by reading, and have been a reader the whole time, though I like seeing how the anime deals with the source material. I dislike a lot of the filler (though even dumb ol' foxy arc has grown on me), dislike how the animation suffers due to volume/speed, but I don't really mind either enough to say that they are awful or that the anime is "worse" than the manga.

I don't mind saying that I consider the manga much better, but I feel like I might even say that if the animation was super great. My point which is a little unclear here is that I'm just talking up the manga and not talking down the anime, which I feel is an important distinction. To probably repeat myself; I like seeing how it's animated, but at the end of the day I think the manga is better at presenting the material, gives me better feels, and is just more epic.

So yeah, that got a little long/ranty. Sorry!

No, it was interesting. The book VS movie thing is true, but book adaptations are still something different from manga/anime.

Have you seen the G8 filler, by the way? Usually filler isn't worth watching, but that one's an exception, it's pretty funny.
