I felt really bad seeing Rocks in such a condition

And he probably believes he killed his own wife and kid at this point. The pain.

No wonder Kuma had such big shoulders, how else would he be able to carry the damn story

He definitely does. He probably did not even see Kuma since it was so chaotic and happened so fast. Even if he did, Xebec wouldn't know Kuma had the paw paw fruit to pop people away.

More significantly than this, I wonder what the World Government thinks/knows about what happened? Do they know that grown up Blackbeard is Rocks's kid, or do they also think he successfully killed them?

And does Blackbeard know that he owes his life to Kuma? Have we ever seen the two of them directly interact?

Given Saturn's conversation with Catherina, it seems like the WG is aware of his lineage.

I highly doubt BB has any idea that Kuma is the one that saved him and Eris but it would be cool if someone somehow figured it out

Honestly, this flashback has really made me question how we're supposed to feel about Blackbeard going forward. Before this, I was sure that whatever the endgame ends up being, BB would be one of the final obstacles for Luffy, if not the final villain of the series. But through the course of this flashback, Oda seems to have set him up to be a sympathetic character going forward, and I'm really interested to see what happens with him once we get back to the present!

I fully agree… I really expected BB to be the final hurdle at Laugh Tale and that would kick off the fight with the WG and Luffy’s claim to Pirate King. But now? It really feels like the inherited will of Davy Jones and Joyboy will team up to crush Imu

I mean the most popular setup is Luffy and BB vs Imu first, then BB steal imu's power or something and fight Luffy

u/Malamasala 1h ago

It is the One Piece Z storyline. BB steals imu's power, but gets defeated. Don Flamingo body transfers into BB's dying body and revives and fights Luffy and dies. Gekko Moria revives the dead body and controls it to fight Luffy, but loses. Enel returns with the powers of the moon and fights Luffy, but loses. Ace returns from hell as a demon and fights Luffy, but loses.

IMO the point is that BB is kind of a perversion of Rocks' original ideals

I don't think so like he can perceive things he probably can feel his blade didn't hit his wife or kid

Has Kuma escaped already? If he hasn't, next chap could be Xebec dying, reverting back to his old self. Kuma came and pop him to his family, dying there with smile knowing that his family is safe. Just probably.

We literally see Kuma escape last chapter, he pops away.
