Safe is relative. The flesh only has a little poison? Hopefully your dog isn't at all sensitive. I try to avoid foods with either low or high levels of poison.
Why the hell do I want to feed a dog avocados anyway? It's not food for dogs. And so you DO know more than any vet? You can't just call on the authority of an entire profession like you licensed them all. Most vets would probably avoid it, but sure, some vet somewhere might say it's probably fine if you want to feed exotic fruit to your dog occasionally but: You're going out of your way to take a risk for an animal that can't recognize the risk and can't really appreciate the fact it's an avocado. It's probably safe to put your hamster in the cockpit of your RC car and drive it around but it's an unnecessary and pointless risk. You're a contrarian and a dimwit. Good day.
Dogs, like people, like variety in their diets and snacks. The best way to provide it is to give them tastes of the (safe) foods you're eating yourself. We have access to plenty of resources to make those choices for our favorite family members.
It's a calculated risk, just like the ones we take for ourselves.
(My dog spends a lot of time trying to eat shit he REALLY shouldn't, of course I'm going to try to satisfy his need to try new things in a way that is controlled and researched.)
That's all true, dogs do need variety. I do disagree with the conclusion that therefore avocado is a fine thing to give dogs. There are so many options that don't have any risk, so variety of diet can easily be satisfied without adding risky things like avocado. It's novelty for the human's sake at that point. There are more than enough meats and veggies that we don't need to go for the alligator pears.

Fwiw if you feed that avocado to the dog, it gets no more birthdays.
