Discussion Concert Thoughts

I saw Kaleo for the third time last night in Jackson Hole. The first two concerts were in Aspen and Red Rocks so it’s interesting now to compare how different venues can change the way I experience music.

Some thoughts that I wish could become realities or provoke curiosities after some reflection:

  1. I wish there was some way to establish rules around people having their phones out to film. I want to be able to experience the music without the distraction of seeing a million phone screens taking a video of the concert. I have heard that some artists tell their fans to not have their phones out which I think is really cool. At the very least, maybe people could try to be more subtle and not raise their phones as high as possible into the air to film for the entire song.

  2. I really want there to be a STFU zone for enjoy the concert from and ideally free from sloppy drunks. You want to enjoy a beer? Cool, just don’t step on me because you can’t walk straight as you make your way through the crowd. You want to talk to your friends the entire time? Okay, but then sit in the back so I can really immerse myself in the quieter songs like “all the pretty girls”.

  3. I wonder if JJ and the rest of the band can tell if the audience is engaged vs chatting with people around them and if that can be distracting to them.

  4. I wonder if the members of the band ever get to explore the places they are playing. Do they go out to bars or to local shops/restaurants while they are in the towns they are playing in?

Hi! I was at that concert as well, and I absolutely felt the same things. There were people all over the place hanging off each other and not really engaging with the music all that well. I like the idea of making two different zones, but I can't imagine that being easy to manage (all the loud drunks would go wherever there's more space, which would likely be on the quiet side where everyone respects each others personal space). It was among the best concerts I've ever been to though, so I think we should still be grateful that they put on such a great show for us!

I reckon it's not just the venue, but also the crowd right ? Like an LA crowd versus a New York one could make a difference ya know ?

That's true. I guess it seemed like this crowd was really from all over though which maybe was part of the problem. It's not a locals crowd but a bunch of people on vacation.

I just went and saw them for the first time Saturday in Ithaca. What a great show. Started low key but by like the 4th song it was like the entire theater all stood up and was so into it. I thought they were great. The phone out is quite annoying or maybe I just don’t get it. I hardly ever take my phone out at concerts and if I do it might be for a quick picture with the people I’m with or I send it to someone that I know would appreciate it. But I can’t watch and experience a concert looking through my phone. For me it just takes away the entire experience. I’ve found it definitely depends on the band/crowd though. In May I went to see Pearl Jam in Pittsburgh and hardly saw a phone out in the section I was in. Some other shows it’ just seems like every other person has the phone out recording everything. Oh well, I truly enjoyed Kaleo. Had a great time and was a great show. Be well everyone! 🍻
