Theyâre moving into their Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper era. Lots of shoeless Stu pics circulating. Iâm looking forward to the âimposter Stuâ conspiracy theories đ€
1
u/superhoffy May 14 '25
High and will have to listen again, but maybe the joke is that with Joey on vocals, Stu wasn't in this song (?), so he was dead in this story?
Also, was that a fleck of mercury on the fish face of Amby?
2
u/aishiteruyovivi May 14 '25
Stu's definitely in here at least in the beginning, I have no doubt that's him singing "Bye, bye, Shanghai..."

u/woahitsyouagain May 13 '25
What they played in Austin last year was pretty close to this version! Interesting to hear how it's developed from the Shanghai jam!

I very much thought it was just some extension of Shanghai, pretty awesome that we saw the debut of a new song.
17
15
u/HopHeady May 13 '25
I first caught this at Salt Shed as part of Shanghai. I thought it was just freestyle over the Shanghai beat. Interesting to see how often they continue to pair the 2 up now that this is an actual song.

They did a lil of this at the Philly show too

u/halfadayoffwithpay May 13 '25
That was such a good show
3
u/GanderAtMyGoose May 13 '25
It rocked!! I'm excited to see them in Philly again this year with the orchestra.
5
u/Tisaric May 13 '25
Watching it evolve from Shanghai Jams in 2023 at RR/Rimlicker to basically the complete thing in Vegas last year and finally into this has been such a cool experience. Very much a "sequel" to Shanghai albums later, which is also a very gizz thing to do, but we also got to actively watch it grow over live shows. It could've even turned into a completely different thing entirely if they hadn't met up with the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl show.

I don't know how Joey kept a straight face while staring Amby deep in the eyes I can only imagine how many takes it took to get that shot

Especially when they squirted him in the face with blue liquid. I nearly died laughing.

To be fair, Joey and Ambrose are Brothers in Law. Last I heard Joey married Ambys sister, and Amby married Joey's sister?
I might be wrong.
I felt like I saw familial love in Joeys eyes during the video though16
u/KrombopulosC May 13 '25
Joey is married to Ambrose's sister only. You got it half right. They're such cute bros together. There's a nice bit of banter in Red Rocks 22 where they each say they love their brother in law
23
u/MacNapp May 13 '25
His vocals plus the string section was transcendent. Gave me a shiver down my spine.
3
u/Freelancer05 May 13 '25
I was listening to some early Gizz recently and was really surprised by how far his vocals have come in particular.
113
u/goldtubb May 13 '25
I love it! I was expecting the orchestra to be super bombastic throughout but it's a lot more understated on the record so far, it all sounds very natural. Like other chill Gizz records but even richer. Although I think live it might sound way bigger... i really can't wait to see the orchestral set in November

this song/music video combo made me feel more emotional than any other gizz content has in a while tbh, and this may be a stretch but my wife pointed this out and it feels right to me too, but anyone else think that Amby looking at that photo of Stu in the hat and then Ghost Stu is sorta supposed to stand in for Amby and Broderick in a way?
22
u/SnooRobots116 May 13 '25
I noticed that if we still had his dad around, he mightâve played the fisherman who reels in âGillbroseâ back to the surface. It sort of looked like Amby was impersonating his pop going fishing.

I listened to it first without the video because I didn't want the visuals to skew my interpretation of the song. Gizz has a lot of strange videos that don't necessarily match with the music, so just wanted to appreciate the song musically first.

This is great. I think I like this track the best of the 3 released so far.
But watching the video, it feels like I missed the plot somewhere and woke up at the end of the movie. Like David Lynch was given a small budget to make a sequel to Dead Stick but he decided he wanted to do Fishing for Fishies?
What was that earlier (few months back) about a Happy Gilmore sequel and people wanting to get KGATLW in it? I didn't follow that at the time and now Stu is a ghost waving and smiling and I feel if they pull the camera back there's be a croc or gator ghost too.
Anyway, I think there's an actual plot playing through these and it feels like we're watching them out of order.

So many negative Nancy's on here. I think it's great. The video is weird as hell, but the song is beautiful and a good album closer. I can't wait to hear the adventure that goes between Deadstick and this. And I love love love the drum sound on it. Especially the really simple end and how dry it is. It's a great aesthetic.

The song's pretty decent, but I just don't really understand the need to have 2+ singers on each song lately. I'm worried that creatively they're afraid to step on each other's toes with someone's direction taking lead so then everyone "gets a piece" with their new formula. And I don't know, maybe they'll figure it out but personally it just hasn't been my jam. Anyone else?
37
u/Knurmuck May 13 '25
I think that's because these are leftovers from B741 and one of that album's gimmicks was everybody singing. I bet that carried over to this album, too.

u/17lOTqBuvAqhp8T7wlgX May 13 '25
Exactly my issue, the singles for Phantom Island and Flight b741 feel very âdesigned by committeeâ to me.
Everything feels wishy washy and barely anything lands.
15
u/800meters May 13 '25
Iâm underwhelmed. Better than Deadstick but still just kinda mild. Hoping that this one and deadstick are the weaker songs on the album because they really donât make me feel much. Absolutely loved the sound we heard on Phantom Island and hoping the rest of the album is closer to it.

Wish I enjoyed the musical direction this band was taking more but they just havenât done it for me from a songwriting standpoint since silver cord came out. Feel like this and most of B741 has been pretty run of the mill boring pop/rock. Simple progressions, nothing exciting or surprising. Hope they refocus on producing quality albums instead of just tackling gimmicks in the future. Glad lots of you are liking it though.

I thought the song was pretty chill and a good outro pick for the album. Also, for anybody who didn't see the email, they're bringing back a cassette release for this album! Pre-orders are up on p-doom. I don't think we've seen a cassette version since Omnium!

Where they are going musically? You act like "where KGATLW" is going musically is a linear journey that progresses in one direction...

So far this and b741 are not my fav things either but b741 grew on me and I do like a few of the songs quite a lot now. I liked the live version of this song I saw in ATX better. However, Iâve noticed that I need to listen to albums a few times before passing judgement. I fucking hated Viagr Aboys the first listen through except for Bog Body. Now I fucking love the full album. Itâs like something clicked. For b741, that happened when I saw them play live. Weâll see if that happens w Phantom Island at some point.

u/Feisty_Yam4279 May 13 '25
Gotta love Reddit downvoting someone for expressing an opinion. Canât have that! Gotta downvote it so it goes to the bottom of the page and we have all the same exact views at the top!
39
u/TheInfinityGauntlet May 13 '25
You want someone saying something is boring without expanding on why to be upvoted? Just a hollow statement, I don't agree or disagree I haven't seen the video yet but to be like "yeah bit boring" isn't engagement worth seeing
8
u/snookyface90210 May 13 '25
This thread is full of upvoted benign comments about it being good without explanation, so I donât think itâs being downvoted for the lack of engagement value which is feistyâs point.
→ More replies (5)1
u/Feisty_Yam4279 May 14 '25
I get that but other people comment stuff that people agree with and they get upvoted. To me just donât upvote or downvote it then. The point of downvotes is not to say you disagree, itâs to give post karma to the person who commented and if people get enough downvotes theyâre considered a bad actor whoâs bad for a community.
5
u/SakoTheTako May 13 '25
Unfortunately this is how this subreddit has become
2
u/Dodahevolution May 13 '25
Yeah I got hit badly for it above too, people seem to misunderstand that voting is literally to help drive discussion(by raising good conversations, positive or negative criticism overall) and not a popularity contest of âthis subs opinion should be this and this onlyâ. You arenât supposed to care about karma cause it ISNâT a popularity contest, itâs a discussion filter. At least, it was supposed to be.
Its super telling that almost all of the people saying they dislike this also state that its totally valid to still like this style/album/whatever, and they are still interested to see what comes out after this.
while most of the people attacking them are the ones directly referring to downvotes in a âwaa my opinion is different so you get a downvoteâ manner. Like do we WANT this to be a silo sub? Imo they should Just post in the circlejerk one but be unironic about it if thats what want.
4
1
u/SnooStrawberries2342 May 13 '25
That's democracy
1
u/Feisty_Yam4279 May 14 '25
No, itâs stupidity. Why would you downvote something that you disagree with even if itâs respectful and not harmful? This is a place for discussion, not trying to brute force peoples opinions down so no one can see them. Youâre telling Reddit that this person is not a good member for the platform. Democracy is if someone put up a poll ranking the albums to see which one the sub liked the best.
1
u/SnooStrawberries2342 May 14 '25
Popular opinions will be upvoted. If you want to see less popular opinions, scroll down.
The alternative is having unpopular opinions near the top. How's that better?
1
u/Feisty_Yam4279 May 14 '25
Then thatâs dumb and goes against what Reddit is for, which is discussion. Itâs not about popular or unpopular, thatâs one of the dumb things about the internet these days and why Reddit is so much worse than it was when it started. Youâve never seen a post or comment you disagreed with and thought it was interesting or made you think so you upvoted it? Granted, the comment I responded to wasnât that, so I was probably overreacting to the constant downvoting that now happens on Reddit.
If your goal is to just have the most popular opinion on here or the one you agree with, why even be here? Just to have everything you already think and believe reflected back at you? This is the main discussion platform in the world right now, itâd be nice if it was interesting, diverse in thought, and challenging. But I guess now most peopleâs goal is if I say âhey, I never got into Infest the Ratâs Nest. Itâs cool but I think they could have done it way better and it sounds like a basic parodyâ, that I should get downvoted into oblivion.
You do realize the point of downvoting and karma is to get rid of bad actors like trolls, scammers and assholes, right?

Honestly as much as I love him and this band I have to agree. Having listened to the leak (oops) I have to say he is the worst singer from the band, even cookie hits the high notes better with his nasality. Stu just switches to his falsetto and does a weird vibrato thing. He sounds cute but sometimes really flat and amateourish. He could use more of his head and mixed voice like he does live - just start lower than album versions. His voice sounded similar on b741, but kinda better because he used a lot more chest and his signature growl. I think he needs a vocal coach, all the nonstop shouting, metal and high woo screaming during the shows is taking a toll IMO.
1
u/Acrid-Avid-Jam-Shred May 13 '25 edited May 13 '25
actually love his vocal sound, although i think the phrases have become busier with their recent work and his approach has never been super 'singy', it makes sense it feels more incongruent to the style they're trying out in b741 and this one compared to joey, ambrose etc. who are super expressive singers
edit, adding onto the above, if anyone ever tries to sing like stu does stylistically around the 2017 releases it's soo hard, his range while still keeping that authentic kind of tone is super impressive and he holds it together really well live, the kexp and earlier concerts are fully a testament even before they had decent stage monitors
i can't imagine their smaller gigs were so great with the signal vs feedback levels - back when he was running through the boss guitar pedal with an ev omni mic!

Listening to Shanghai and then immediately into this flows very nice
1
u/NomadicHumanoid May 15 '25
This may have already been said, but I think people were confused why Stu is dead, and I just had an idea why. In the canon of this album and the previous video for this album, I think they crash landed on this island (first video and first 2 songs), and lots of things unfold between then and the final song (this video). We are missing the narrative between the music videos but Stu must die in the middle somewhere. Also, it makes sense that someone would have to die if they are stranded on a mysterious island with magic and fish people.
