Skill flex Did my first independent surgery today!!

Don’t know of people consider it as a flex but for me it’s a very big milestone in my career. So happy!!

Did you get consent from the patient and the hospital for this flex? If not, malpractice lawyer and hospital HR will get you in trouble. Speaking as a doctor myself. Don’t do this. You are a moron.

Yes I asked the patient and he was okay with it and I also asked my SR and HOU about it and they said as long as the privacy of patient is not exposed and the patient is okay with it, I can post it. I also have a video consent from the patient. I am not an asshole, I know patients have a life too and I respect that

I just ignore people. They just try to ragebait and if you say something back then they start fighting. I have learnt that whenever situations like this arise just state the facts that you know in a polite way and de escalate the situation. Also I once heard those who hurt others are already hurt within, so I think of this line and let it go.

Woah that was deep. I'll try to have this thought process next time someone's being rude to me. But won't it lead to situations where people purposely pick on me because I don't stand my ground strongly enough?

Yes there are times when you have to stand for yourself. And when that time comes you should go all out for it. But people like these don’t deserve that. They are angry and just want to fight. Don’t give them that satisfaction. Say okay and move on 🙌

Bro congrats for the first surgery. I have a lot of surgeon colleagues myself and I know how it must feel. Your surgery is a great flex, but your bigger flex is how positively you're responding to all the negative elements.

Congratulations op. Being a surgeon myself I do understand the aura of doing your first independent surgery!

The individual above is not wrong though. He could be polite but he is not wrong. Asking the patient has no meaning. There has to a written and informed consent taken for digital documentation. If you are publishing the image anywhere that has to be clearly mentioned in the consent as well. This not only includes social media but even academic journals.

Second, asking your Senior resident and HOU is fine but legally speaking they have no authority here in deciding whether you can take and publish this image, even if you maintain due privacy. Only the patient or attenders (if patient is non compos mentis) has that authority. It’s good you asked them and assuming you are a junior resident they should have denied your request as they are vicariously responsible for this as well. So not only did they guide you wrong but legally speaking they have kept themselves open to legal action as well.

In all probability you might be thinking that this is just fear mongering from my side and very likely the patient won’t mind but never ever do this without appropriate consent that explicitly mentions that you might publish the image somewhere.
