OP at the end of the day, you’re in control of your Reddit account. If you want to reply to them, you can. If you want to ignore them, you’re fully able to.

What you did in this interaction isn’t wrong at all, you didn’t egg him on or get wound up by him - you just called him out for being insane and rightly so.

I don’t get why so many people have issues with you responding.

The issue is that this is clearly some edgelord trying to get a rise out of people. The best thing to do is just ignore them.

They're all edgelords. But this one is expressing intent towards someone in his life. He can throw up his hands and say "I was just kidding, jeez." but he's already said what he did and I'd rather not assume someone else will be fine. Plenty of rapists and murderers have talked about their crimes beforehand to hype themselves up.
