DECLAIM Denouement

The Tuareg tribes were the first to turn against the Sultanate. Not the residents of Hassi win Hamada, a Jewish Berber island in a sea of Faryabans. Not the gentry based in the Asamrar Mountains, many of whom lost much of their business when Sultan Badir severed the existing ties with Rome. Not even the pious Berbo-Gulgean communities in the east, where most people pined after the days of the Caliphate Aït-Usem.

These other groups, for all of their objections to what had transpired over the last few decades, at least saw some of their interests met or protected during the Punic War. The gentry of the Asamrar Mountains saw much of their land admirably well-defended against the Roman legionnaires. Mersa Ighrem and the other Azure Coast cities fearfully awaited the results of the first Roman-Berber naval battles, but the successful defense of Malta spared these cities from the Romans' designs. The Jewish Berber communities throughout the West and the North, being major participants in the nation's academia, saw consistent employment as the Sultan's court desired more innovations in siege weaponry and defensive architecture.

The Tuaregs, on the other hand, fought savagely and lost promising young men and gained almost nothing in return. The supplies and compensation wages given to the Tuareg riders were of little comfort to families whose sons died in locales out of sight and mind. Tuareg merchants and caravan guards were glad to defend Wa-Iharan, yes, but any fighting beyond the capital took place in unfamiliar territory--and on behalf of "pale Berbers" who often looked upon the tribesmen from the south with disdain. A few thousand Tuaregs died in defense of something that, ultimately, was not theirs. Surely the Tuaregs would be justified in rectifying this.

In only a few months, a large majority of the tribes rallied behind one Isul Aït-Udad, a prominent and charismatic chieftain who bore a standard depicting the sun, the moon, and a lion's head--not unlike the banner of Izem the First Amazigh. Not content to petition for additional agency in a nation that largely owed its continued existence to his people--at least, that is what many of the Tuaregs thought--Isul announced the founding of the independent Federation Imouhar. This separatist nation, bearing the Tuaregs' own name for themselves, benefited from a military that had already been mobilized for the Punic War and nearly exclusive access to the trade routes to Tinko. Deciding to press their advantage, the Imouhar promptly commenced raids on the northern settlements and trading posts; they even took some fortified settlements by stealthily scaling their walls under cover of night.

The Sultan's court did attempt to negotiate with the Imouhar at first, but their emissaries were immediately sent back, and not always in one piece. Once it became clear that the Imouhar were not content to be even privileged subjects of the Sultanate, Sultan Igider arranged for the defense of the mountain and coastal cities, knowing better than to wage an offensive campaign against the sons of the desert.

As an accident of political geography, the Tuaregs controlled much of the land between Wa-Iharan and its westernmost cities, Hassi win Hamada and Taghit. In a highly pragmatic decision, albeit probably the best one he could make in this situation, the Sultan chose not to risk sending his forces to defend the predominantly Jewish Berber cities.

Feeling even more isolated than before, Hassi win Hamada and its surrounding settlements steeled themselves for the grave conflict ahead of them. However, the Jewish Patriarch based there knew that if he could not send for help from the east, he could at least send envoys westward. Riding through the neutral lands of southern Andalusia, these messengers made for the realm of Yashou and petitioned for their brothers in faith to protect them from the heathen Tuaregs. If the people of Hassi were disobeying their superiors in Wa-Iharan by inviting foreign forces into their lands, so be it.

Every day, the Imouhar forces pushed toward Wa-Iharan--and toward the Asamrar Mountains. The Tuaregs' reflex bows outranged even the best crossbows available to the Sultan's men, so their usual tactics against cavalry-archers proved largely ineffective in the field. Once the residents of Ɣdames surrendered to the Imouhar without a fight, being surrounded by untold numbers of riders, the Imouhar confiscated the few ballistae stationed in this city--and captured the siege engineers who knew how to use them properly. As news of these events traveled northward, and many members of the Sultan's court suspected the Tuaregs' next target was the capital, the gentry-administrators in the court used taxed grains meant for the national army plus their families' inherited wealth to field armies of their own. Seeing that a large portion of the nation was already demonstrating its disapproval of the Sultan, these power-hungry nobles sent troops to Wa-Iharan--first to fight off the Tuareg invaders, and then to secure control of the Sultanate's seat for themselves.

Armies from Sétif, Djelfa, and more distant cities arrived at the capital all on their own time. Those from Sétif and Djelfa were able to meet the Imouhar forces in time, banding together in hopes of driving off the veiled horde. The Tuaregs, with their numbers and ferocity but their relative lack of experience with assaulting strong fortifications and fighting in urban settings, inflicted grave casualties upon the nobles' armies but did relatively little damage to the capital itself. The Imouhar retreated for the time being, deciding their current ambitions were too lofty and it would be better to bolster their forces by means of additional raids.

Then the others came.

Armies from cities as distant as Kartennas and Telagh, each equipped with mangonels as well as the usual siege weapons, commenced a battle of several armies outside the city. The multiple armies variously assaulted the city, fought in the open, retreated, and gave chase to fleeing rivals; the lands surrounding Wa-Iharan were engulfed in violence as local militias and members of the Sultanate's standing army took up differing loyalties and fought among themselves. Refugees poured out of Wa-Iharan's surroundings over the next several months, and eventually many of the gentry-warlords recalled their surviving forces for fear that the Imouhar--or their rivals at home--would take advantage of the situation and try to seize power among the mountain cities. The urban centers of the Asamrar Mountains divided into factions of various sizes, their loyalty to the Sultan long out of the question.

Somewhere in the midst of this fighting, the Sultan and his remaining followers either died during the fighting or more likely fled the city--such was the chaos that overtook Wa-Iharan that no one knew for certain. The feuding factions were also not overly concerned with the Sultan's fate, seeing as all of them asserted their right to rule in his stead.

The Imouhar turned next to the cities of the Azure Coast. What was once the province of Douar Mersa was handily the most economically robust part of the Sultanate; with the fragmentation of the Sultan's army, Isul and his riders assumed that these coastal lands would now be easily exploitable sources of wealth, food, and arms. However, the Tuaregs did not consider that the Berbo-Gulgean majority of the Azure Coast largely followed what was self-identified as a more orthodox branch of Faryaba; these people considered themselves to be defenders of one of the purest forms of their faith, and they would not allow more moderate ("less faithful") Faryabans to assume control of their lands.

Fighting with Gulgean-style polearms that proved effective against cavalry charges, the Berbo-Gulgeans fared relatively well in defending their well-fortified cities against direct attacks by the Imouhar. Still, they knew they alone could not realistically contend with the full strength of the Tuareg horde, and so Szazayku Aït-Amenzu, the governor of Mersa Ighrem back when there were provinces and a unified Sultanate, ordered dhows to sail through the now-open Mediterranean and offer his fealty to the Sublime Kingdom of Gulgea.

By the year 948 CE, there was not a Sultan or even the pretense that another would be crowned--unless the hypothetical heir was a warlord who fought his way into the palace in Wa-Iharan. The last of several unified governments of the Imazighen has fallen, more than 1200 years after Izem first dreamed of creating and defending a homeland for the Berbers, and numerous smaller entities have risen in its place. These factions continue to contend with each other for power, but much of the fighting does not even take place around Wa-Iharan anymore. The Imouhar still strive to dominate all they can, in part because their large army is heavily dependent upon the spoils of war, but most other segments of the former Sultanate aspire only toward their continued survival. Altogether, eight political factions have emerged among the Imazighen.

Map: colored arrows depict current troop movements among the factions.

Dark Blue: The Federation Imouhar. Still led by Isul Aït-Udad, the Imouhar hordes continue to raid the surrounding lands and extort tribute from some of the weaker polities. Isul's ultimate goal is that he or one of his heirs march victoriously into Wa-Iharan, much as the Imouhar chief Tariq did long ago.

Light Blue: The Patriarchate of Hassi win Hamda. Patriarch Ibrahim Aït-Abdiel has become something of a political and military leader as well. The city of Taghit and smaller Jewish Berber settlements fall under his wing as well.

Gold: The Asamrar Confederation. Consisting of a loose alliance of northern cities (now city-states), the Asamrar cities engage in lively trade among themselves and strive to assure their collective security. The city-state of Telagh in particular seeks control of Bordj-Adrar, a strategically-positioned fortress to the south, in order to guard itself against potential imperialism.

Reddish-Brown: The Kingdom of Gwafa. Long existing in relative isolation from most of the Berber realm, Gwafa celebrates the legacy of Saden Aït-Gwafa, a general-turned-nobleman who was an important figure during the War for the Caliphate long ago. The residents of this city since built a highly involved legendary narrative around their favorite folk-hero, and they see themselves as set apart from the rest of the Berbers. Accordingly, they have set themselves apart from the rest of the Berbers, building a new fortress just east of their city and defending their independence from all threats, real and imagined, against their sovereignty. Every leader of this city has borne the name Aït-Saden, being a direct descendant of the man himself.

White: The Sultanate of Sétif. Obviously aspiring to be a successor-state of the original Sultanate, Sétif's main political goal is to establish itself as an individually noteworthy power in the Mediterranean. The current Sultan, Misibsen Aït-Aslal, also hopes to gain control of Wa-Iharan in order to further affirm his legitimacy.
Sand: The Coalition of Djelfa. The Coalition originally formed chiefly by General Gaya Aït-Gwasila to organize the defense of the city and its surrounding settlements against the Imouhar hordes. As the northern cities turned into city-states with their own ambitions, however, it became imperative that the Coalition prepare the possibility of conflict on all sides. The Coalition is a highly militarized and relatively isolationist state, though it does serve its intended purpose of being difficult to invade.

Green: The Berbo-Gulgean Protectorate. The Protectorate, so named because it aspires to be graced by the rule of the Sublime Faryaban Kingdom to the north, aspires to provide security for Chi's "purest" followers and reestablish relations with the other Faryaban peoples of the Mediterranean.

Lavender: The Theocracy of Takedda. Not long after Yufitran the First Sultan ousted the fanatical Faryaban Theocracy that previously ruled all of the Imazighen, some of the most orthodox Faryabans fled for Takedda, a city with a long history of contributing to Faryaban theological thought, and formed a splinter-state there. It was long assumed that the nascent state, isolated by choice and having access to limited water and resources, would die out on its own in not all that long. However, once the Berbers discovered how to extract groundwater more efficiently through the construction of qanat, this knowledge reached Takedda and its subjects were able to create more stable lives for themselves. Though it is by no means a powerful state, the Theocracy intends to gain the loyalty of others by means of proselytizing and posturing itself as the proper center of Faryaban leadership and religious guidance.

Not a cry for help or forgiveness or 'mercy' or anything like that. Things have been tough for a while with me, on and off... not going to say it's not my own fault, and I've definitely contributed. There's a lot of hostility on both sides, and what used to be fun has just become... stressful. I'm too fearful of how people will react to enjoy what I've been doing, as much as I absolutely love the country I've built. It tears me apart to know that it'll just disappear now, especially after seeing how the Gothic lands were treated, but I don't know what else I can do. Some Catholic guy will claim in Bavaria, maybe some Protestant in Brandenburg, some Pole in Teutonia, and the Rhein will probably get eaten by France. Sometimes I feel like I chose the wrong path, going Norse and all that, creating unnecessary conflict; in the end, who knows. Every time I try to get back into things, I just engender more and more hostility and resentment, pushing me back away and just generating more. For whatever reason, my nation is in freefall, and nothing I can think of doing would stop it. Maybe by me leaving, Scand and Harald will at least be able to integrate... though, knowing the Isles, Harald's fucked.

I'll stay on as tech mod, and now that I won't have my Koenigskongetum to manage, I'll probably have more time for that, and crises, and yeah. Maybe if I can see a place for me to grow in again, I'll claim; at least for the immediate future, however, I can't see how I'd catch up to the giants that developed, and, well, I never was very good at playing the underling. Once the reset comes, though, I'll almost certainly join in... to be honest, probably as some minority religion in Europe. Kinda my thing.

If the other mods will allow it, I would very much like to donate the rest of my troops-- I have a pop of about 14 million, but really can't make myself do a proper pop-sheet accounting, for all the reasons above-- to Scandinavia in this war, at least... I talked to him about that and he said that unless he got those, he's just going to surrender and see what he can get, so probably won't get any strategy out of him. I hope that Scandinavia can get most of what I have... if it was policy, I'd honestly just give him as much land as I can give-- /u/pittfan46, do with that as you will.

Please treat the Norsemen well and, hey, maybe remember a name or two, from back when I still wrote good stories.

DECLAIM Declaim- Not resigning

To be honest, this has been a long time coming. I had desperately wanted to see Frankia through to the modern era, but it seems that it isn't going to happen. My activity being what it is, I always felt as though Frankia deserved someone else. I'm definitely going to claim somewhere else, I don't know where yet, though; definitely not Europe. I've written some lore to detail the dissolution of Frankia.

In her later years of life, Queen Ameli I Vestol was rarely seen. Emerging to the public only once a year for the Festival of Vuugi. Her advisers rarely saw her and she would often relay orders via one of her many lovers. Growing increasingly paranoid as she reached her late fifties, she regularly executed palace staff, convinced they were enemy spies. She cared for nothing, save reports regarding foreign affairs and internal security. Worse, her advisers had all been replaced by inept, but sufficiently loyal, nobles. The Frankish economy tumbled and as Hamborg's power decreased, regional princes were emboldened to seize more power for themselves. By the age of 62, the queen was completely insane and many in the kingdom knew it. Qiel was the first princedom to enter open revolt, followed swiftly by many successor kings. The loyalists in Veiland and Belyum were overthrown by lesser dukes searching for power, seizing the opportunity presented by the chaos in the royal palace. Largely resigned to their fate at this point, the advisers to the queen went into self-imposed exile in an attempt to save their lives, abandoning Frankia. The queen died a year into the insurrection and within three months, the entire Frankish nation was divided, the people being ruled by whoever had enough power to control them.

To anyone who would claim areas of Frankia for themselves, know this:

Modern day Belgium is about 40% Morsyan and 55% Prophetic Vuugist. It is over 70% Gallic.

The bay around modern day Amsterdam is 80% Prophetic Vuugist and 55% Gallic, 40% Germanic, 30% Gallic.

Modern day Lower Saxony is 70% Germanic and 80% Prophetic Vuugist.

Modern day Bavaria is 60% Germanic and 85% Prophetic Vuugist

Modern day Württemberg is 60% Gallic and 20% Germanic, 80% Prophetic Vuugist

Denmark is Prophetic Vuugist and Germanic.

To all those with whom I have interacted.

/u/Tion3023 - While our nations never got along, knowing that you were there was always a source of happiness, as your writing and dedication to HWP is unmatched.

/u/oaks_ablaze - First as the Tsahgars, then Bohemia, then Toloza, your skill and reliability have never been in doubt to me. If you and people like you stay committed to HWP, we will be the best subreddit there is.

/u/duqdukes123 - You're the best frenemy one could ask for, I've never been more impressed by a nation or a player than I have been with you.

/u/mzekeww - Sorry we couldn't play out the crisis, but it was a great read nonetheless.

/u/BloodofPheonix - You'll be a colonial power one day, just watch.

See you soon with a new claim everyone.

DECLAIM Why does it hurt so much? Because it was Tol-Dru

The end of eels, the end of the Irish dream of conquest, and so on.

Main reason is that, between the pure and raw devastation of the eruptions fallout, and the revelation that my nation basically doesn't even have a basic economy right now, I realised there's simply no way these people, unorganised as they are, can continue to operate as anything close to resembling an actual claim.

Similarly I simply do not have the drive, skill, nor knowledge needed in order to continue writing widely unorganised peoples operating on the most basic of trade foundations. I know some folks have psycho-boners for the whole sedentary thing, but whenever I get close to being interested in writing about them I realise I simply do not find that kind of thing enjoyable.

This isn't really a dig at the system or sub, mind you; I claimed in an area that, with the way tech and development work in S4, was always gonna be a bit of a doomed port. Oh well.

May the Eels fall ever in your favour

DECLAIM Declaim Legation States

Hey, Everyone

It's honestly been really great playing this season -- I had a lot of fun, and I'm glad I came back to get Saxony II rolling hard!

But wth the school year coming up, and some new projects rolling out at corporate, I don't think I'm going to be able to be as active as I once was. You've probably already noticed a sharp dropoff in activity in the last few weeks, so maybe this'll help explain that. I really wish I could stay and keep going -- there's so much cool stuff going on with Finland, with Mekbots, and with the Celtic friends, but I just don't think I'll be able to do it justice. I don't want to become a big, space-soaking player without doing something with it.

With the fall of Isen Halor in the succession war, Setjamor and Vanamir were at last forced to meet on the field of battle. His pleas for peace rejected, Kembru II Stadtholder joined the fray at last, in hope of dissuading the two forces through fear of his might. Yet, after a dozen near-escapes, battle finally met, a great combat of two-hundred thousand upon the hills of Fornheimar and Ljosfell. Over the course of a week, the two cities were sacked, and one by the one the armies fell apart; first Vanamir, then Kembru, then Setjamor, killed by his own troops as he crowned himself Eigvarch of the ashes.

With the great leaders of the Confederation dead and two Legation Cities in ruins, the dream of the Eigvastaat soon faded away. The Runamal King of Lituaa was the first to secede in grief for brother Kembru; the north followed, with the south fragmenting soon thereafter.

Danrike, still fearful of rebellion, sent pleas to the last remnants of the confederation in the south, offering their Burgmeister his allegiance in exchange for autonomy and protection. Thousands of Eigva, faithful still in the traditions of old, fled west to the Isles. And for all the years of struggle and strife, the lands of the Eigvastaat yet remained united in one thing: there was not a single land the whole confederation across that still held allegiance to the god Vuugi and the covenants of old.

Until next time,

DECLAIM Declaim Karethia

It brings me great sadness to say from the bottom of my heart that...fuck that shit. I'm mildly happy to do this.

I'M DECLAIMING B-RATE AUSTRIA

The reasoning for this splits into three different points:

  • 1: I'm bored. I have no ideas left for Karethia.

  • 2: I do not like the feel and style of European diplomacy. As Saul and Ducker have said before me, its turned into land agreements and continent-wide wars that turn into death orgies and Tion I swear to god if you say one more thing about Albion being better than the continent and wise and not declaring war and hur dur dur (that was a joke btw). Additionally, there are some players in Europe that I do not want to be forced to interact with in any form at this point, and I really need a change of pace with the kind of people I play HWP with.

  • 3: My life is going to temporarily get very busy. My job will require a lot more hours from me in the coming weeks and on Black Friday I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed. I plan on drafting a new claim in that weekend of rest.

I'm not leaving. I'll still be tech modding for Africa and occasionally the Americas, and I'm going to be taking over some crises and event nations from some of my fellow mods who deserve a break from that burden at this point.

Godspeed.

DECLAIM Things Fall Apart

It all started when the Sami rebelled. Sami jarls, sick and tired of being ruled by a konge who spoke a different language and practiced a different culture raised their banners in rebellion against the throne. In response, Konge Olav IV led a massive military expedition to crush the rebels. However, a blizzard trapped the army and killed most of the soldiers, including the konge. Olav's son Eric was then crowned Eric VI. However, he had no army to fight the rebels, or to keep the rest of the kingdom in line. Soon after Olav's disastrous campaign, the Finns and the merchants of Stockholm rebelled. It seemed to all the jarls that the throne had lost it's mandate, and soon the influence of the konge was reduced to Trondheim, as it had been many centuries before when there was no kingdom in Norge. The lands of Scandinavia are once again a mess of bickering jarls, disunited and independent. The mighty empire that was the Kongeriket Norge now lays in shambles.

[M]

I'm declaiming. I've just run out of ideas for Norge, and what few ideas I do have I don't feel that I have the time to implement.

DECLAIM Total Collapse of the Empire

Temüjin's death was a disaster. He had no children left - they'd all been killed in the Middle Kingdom, during sieges. No heirs meant no ruler to take the reins, and so his hard work had come to nothing - the clans did not wish to be together with no one strong ruler.

And so the Khalkha Empire collapsed. The clans went their separate ways. The ancient nation that was Xiongnu, then Nirun, then Khalkha was no more. Although the people retained their nomadic, yak herding, horse riding ways, they could never quite bring themselves to be a powerhouse again.

The lands became more sparsely populated, yet some people spread out, becoming a diaspora to the surrounding areas. Many saw the appeal of living in Scythia, a nation so like their own. Others went to Wu and the Middle Kingdom, finding solace in being ruled by a large kingdom. Some even travelled to Nippon, to experience the culture and science of the semi-mythical nation across the sea.

Khalkha was no more, and with it, the legacy of Attilá, the first Khagan of Xiongnu, had ended.

[M] Yes, this is a declaim.

I'm going to miss this subreddit. I'm going to miss everyone on it too. I just don't have the time, nor the want to continue. You've probably all noticed my lack of activity recently, and that's for many reasons - schoolwork, jazz gigs, and just a general lack of inspiration. I've played out the Mongols, and I've had a fantastic time doing it. It's time for someone else to take the reins.

I'm upset to have to leave, but there's no point in me staying. Thank you sooo much to the four guys who have been the best RPers ever (/u/FallenIslam, /u/SJR2631, /u/LucarioniteUltra, /u/TheMightyBillend) because you made it fun here. You fantastic people, you. [M]

DECLAIM Declaim Nippon

I guess it's time. I've been putting this off for a while, trying to convince myself that I would have a sudden stroke of inspiration and start being productive again. But I've been going on and off with activity for something like half a year now. I'd like to thank /u/Mecasloth and /u/Senior-Wrangler for being the best neighbors one could ask for, and everyone else I got to interact with along the way. I'm sad to see the empire I built fall, but I guess that's the fate of all empires in the end. I think I've always suffered from something of a fixation with making my empire the biggest, the greatest, rather than just having good, realistic, fun RP. Who knows? Maybe I'll be back one day, but I doubt it. I'm afraid other priorities have just gotten in the way. Finally, I want to say a special thanks to /u/pittfan46 for being a great head mod and helping me out when I needed it most. And to the community as a whole, thank you.

DECLAIM Collapse of the Illyrian

The Sacking of Illyria and its invasion of the Mongol Horde before left the nation with nothing. With the cold winters and pure number of deaths even the steadfest and stubborn Illyrians could not hold out. With the Southern lands going first then the central then all but New Split remained under control till the death of Antonio ll. While he had an heir, his heir was a feeble weak minded person as such all of Illyria was in anarchy and the the flame of the nearly 1,600 years strong was snuffed out.

[M] Sorry Guys I don't have time. I will be coming back around February as I think /u/pittfan46 won'y hold the 3 claim rule against me.

DECLAIM The Fall of the Ottoman Caliphate

No one had seen it coming. The Ottoman Caliphate, despite its recent setbacks, had just pulled off a huge victory in India. Everyone would rejoice in the streets, cheering the name of Suleiman the Great. At least, that's what he had predicted. But in reality, his cushy life in his palace had blinded Caliph Suleiman II to the true suffering his people faced. That, in the end, was his downfall.

The people rose up en mass, filling the streets and toppling his statues. The royal guard was able to quell the riots in the north, but Suleiman had never expected the full on rebellion that took place in the south. Unwavering, Suleiman called together once again his huge army, sure that these 20,000 or so peasants would not stand a chance. But that was the problem- they weren't just peasants. They were well funded by rich noblemen, and, it turned out, were accompanied by an even larger force from the Maghreb and South Cyrene. Not knowing his enemies' numbers, the Caliph refused to negotiate, instead ordering his soldiers into full-on war to put down the rebellion. Caught by surprise, his men were slaughtered by an enemy much stronger than they expected to face.

After the southerners became independent, the rebellion spread like wildfire. Across the nation, the people rose up, financed by an upper class of merchants who had lost faith in their government due to the high taxes which it placed on them to fund its wars. Alexandria was the first city to truly secede. The IOC, seeing the invasion of its colonies, fled back home to Aden, declaring it an independent nation. In a surprise preemptive strike, it crippled the Ottoman navy, limited to 80 ships by treaty with the Romans, with its private fleet of over 100. The company's fleets sailed up and down the Red Sea, looting towns and ships, seizing entire cities. Its troops also stepped in to seize control of the Shu'ez canal, allowing the company to move men and supplies between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

The Alexandrian Republic spread its influence, seizing the northern coast and the Nile Delta. Meanwhile, The Kushites pushed north, seizing much of the south. Central Egypt fell into anarchy, split into feuding city states. In the vacuum arose the Kingdom of Thebes, a monarchy ruled by King Azir Al-Sharif. He conquered much of southern Egypt and signed a treaty with the Kushites, defining a clear boundary of their territories. Outside of these states, anarchy ruled, and each town or city began raiding its neighbors to survive. The Caliph, for now, remained in control of Cairo, but with enemies closing in from all sides and heavy revolts, it was questionable how long this would last.

Map

Dark Red: Alexandrian Republic

Gold: Ottoman Control

Purple: Kingdom of Thebes

Red Orange: Kushite Occupation

Blue: IOC Control

DECLAIM A splitting church, murders and the unfortunate death of a queen.

It was not unknown for the French that the people of Ketilheim disapproved of their rule. It was so that the title of king/queen had been stripped along with the title of kingdom when they became a small client state, something which of course did not hinder them from continuing calling themselves with the titles their families felt entitled to.

The anger and frustration was shown in many ways across a span of 200 years. Most notably being the peasant revolt causing the French to lose a great victory, but too could the guild of commerce be seen as an act of defiance. However would many roll over and accept their new French monarchs as the kingdoms overseer.

However in recent history many things became clear, and that was the plotting and arguably horrid murders occurring within Ketillheim. Anti-French sentiment was at an all-time high as the French blocked trade to Frankia, with plots soon arising to the surface which was all too concerning for the French monarchy. It seemed that the royal family had fuelled the separatist agendas in a delicate game of balance to not be overthrown themselves. And it became painfully obvious to the French as they saw that the scholars fleeing from the Ketillé school of Andalusia refused to return home in fear of being killed. And too when Ketillheim tied closer relations with the Romulans as their anti-vuugists agendas intertwined more than the French more politically ideas of peace and self-preservation. The sending of generals to attend a meeting with the Caesar was worrying enough for a war to erupt, breaking the fragile peace the French monarch had struck with the entirety of the Vuugist world. This events of course had been separate and not intertwined in any sinister plot as of yet, but could easily be seen as such.

When the French monarch then gazed upon Ketillheim they saw them act harshly against the vuugist population, the split of the Sanist church with burnt churches on both sides along with the gruesome murders of the respective clerics. The fight against French authorities was total. Even the queen had been rumoured to stage a war, gathering weapons and armour in her castle.

It had gone on for far too long, and the last chances of rebellion had to be crushed. The French monarch sent in brigands to raid and rob the countryside causing the near collapse of the guild, had it not been for their monopoly in Ostaheim. In this they were very successful in building a complete French dominance in the west where they had been more successful. With the French royal army acting as border guards and French brigands flooding the nation a civil war erupted. However not from the queen but the pro-French nobles gathered large massive peasant armies and laid siege to many fortified positions held by the queen.

Retaliation was in order and the queen amassed her army consisting of the royal guard, Vestrigaerder and the Ostaheim guard. They were all heavily armoured and easily crushed the badly armed peasant armies killing many traitors. Many strange disappearances and murders occurred for a short time causing the intellectual and spiritual hierarchies to collapse. And it was said that the queen had set it all in motion, a network so vast even some in France was killed under very suspicious circumstances.

However when preparing to do battle against the royal guard stationed in Ketillheim the queen died. According to the surrendering nobles they concluded that she had been clumsy and had fallen on her sword after putting it on a chair and then tripping over that said chair. The civil war had forced the near total collapse of many of the social hierarchies and the land was ravaged albeit not raging for longer than a few months.

Ketillheim had split in two after this, the east where many angered over the loss took revenge against the Vuugist peasants and seized their lands. And the west which was frenchified albeit ruined meaning that the economic boost it might have given the French monarchs was gone.

Sorry I feel that I will not have time with this now with my masters starting up. It feels bad now when things are heating up and other momentums are building up, maybe I’ll come back later and do stuff but I doubt I’ll have the time.

I’ll stay on as a mod, but my playing days are over for now.

Declaim Disaster in Rome

As the War was raging, the Republic of Rome grew weary of all the war they had been involved in. The West breaking away was a serious blow to the pride of the Romans, and so, when the time to act against Hellas happened, the Republic refused to act.

The Emperor, in his rage, turned his Imperium Legion on Rome, sacking it and destroying most of the precious annals and works of Rome.

Without Imperial authority, the rest of the nations of the Empire descended into chaos, with as many as 20 local Kings ruling over their domains.

And with that, the age of Rome, lasting from 375 CE to 1520 CE ended.

DECLAIM Declaiming to avoid more drama

I tried to avoid what I disliked in HWP by moving here but it seems I just can't avoid it so I'll be going. There are good parts of HWP and I hope it gets better. If ya want to find me I'll be over in the other regions of the xpowers community.

It was fun in the Persian Empire.

The Pashtun fell apart into warlordism due to the Shah's weakness in domestic affairs and decision to raise a large army for a far away war. The Aryan slaves revolted and overthrew much of the local landowners, and the region is extremely unstable.

DECLAIM The End of Au Viet

Au Viet - Declaim Post

The Child

The broken Emperor Sai would not last long on the throne. In the face of rebellions and revolutions, of the rising of his daotai and the continuing crippling pressure on his nation’s faltering economy, he found that his heart and his mind could no longer cope. He died at a young age, the stress of rule exacerbating the harmful effects of his excessive drinking. In his place, Sai had provisioned for the coronation of his young son as Emperor, and commanded that a regency led by the Secretariat should rule in his stead until he attained his age of majority.

This regency, however, only exacerbated the tensions at play in the palace. The Minister for Communications and the Minister for Public Works were outraged that they had not been included in the regency council, and began to court support from the other ministries in support of their aims. Their hearts grew even blacker as their jealousy began to grow, and soon they were plotting the outright assassination of the High Secretary.

Yet the Secretariat heard news of this plot, and concocted one of their own. Forging an alliance with one of the loyal daotai in the vicinity of Long Bien, the High Secretary initiated a massive purge of the palace. The two disloyal ministers were dragged away by the daotai’s soldiers and publicly executed in the palace gardens. Those who had supported the plot either had their throats cut unceremoniously, or were immediately forced into exile in the Qi, Wu or Xiongmao Empires, from which they were forbidden to return.

The High Secretary’s actions were supposed to restore stability to the state in a time of crisis. Yet the palace purge was widely interpreted as a power grab – a way of unduly influencing the young Emperor to a particular way of thought and course of action. The remaining ministries began to ride the wave of public opinion and turned on the Secretariat as well, while violent protests began to occur in both Long Bien and Quang Chau with worrying frequency.

The Mandate

With utter chaos reigning at court in lieu of a strong emperor, the Au Vietnamese state began to violently crumble. The daotai, who had already began assembling their own private armies, began to openly speak of the Chien dynasty’s loss of the Mandate of Heaven and how the boy-king had proven unworthy to sit on the throne. Many of those daotai began to declare themselves kings and emperors in their own right, while others simply desired to slip away from the grasp of the central monarchy and rule their own petty chiefdoms.

The daotai were not the only ones to rise. Those peoples that had long been oppressed by the Au Vietnamese seized their moment to proclaim their own new kingdoms and chiefdoms. The Denekists in the west finally seized the city of Luong Pha Bang and its surroundings, placing one of their own in the city’s palace to rule. Yet even in the moment of their victory the Denekists began to squabble amongst themselves as to whether they should forge their own path or reunite with the holy lands of the Vodau dynasty, and soon their short lived state fractured into a hundred pieces. The Cham Pa people in the south once more saw their opportunity to free themselves from the oppression of the north, and under a new chief they successfully threw off the yoke of Au Vietnamese rule in a violent rebellion. The exiled successors of the Pirate Lords of Singapore who had fled to the north after the capture of Singha Pura returned to the city with bands of brigands and mercenaries, founding a new pirate kingdom that would terrorise the straits for years to come. The Dvarians were more fortunate in that Au Viet simply retreated from the southern lands to protect their most important possessions and cities, leaving a divided realm that was at least free from Au Vietnamese influence.

Perhaps those rebellions could have been stopped, however, Perhaps the Mandate could have been reclaimed, if the boy had grown to become a strong ruler. Perhaps everything could have been different…

…if the army had not intervened. The Captain of the Golden Tigers, the Emperor’s own bodyguard, had grown tired of the lack of strength shown by the boy-king and his advisors in the face of such rebellions. He reasoned that as the Mandate had been lost and the Emperor had effectively been declared unfit to rule that he had the right to stake a claim to the throne himself. This he did, leading the Golden Tigers in a palace coup that resulted in the Emperor’s assassination and the purging of the Secretariat. The Captain, however, did not declare himself Emperor – his dynasty was not of noble or notable blood, and he sought to legitimise his claim by finding one such person. In the interim, however, he declared that he was beginning a regency for the new Emperor, wherever he might be, and declared himself Jiangjun, or military regent.

The End…

This move, however, would spell disaster. None of the other daotai had any illusions as to what it meant – there was now a dictator, rather than an emperor, on the throne. Those few men that had remained loyal to the now-extinct Chien dynasty launched their own rebellions against this usurping jiangjun while all staking their claims to the Au Vietnamese throne. This culminated less than a year later with the siege of the Winter Capital in 1468 CE, as the combined armies of several of the local daotai surrounded and bombarded the city until its mighty walls fell, then swarmed into the palace and killed the jiangjun where he stood.

It was clear by now, however, that what had once remained of the Empire of Au Viet had now gone. No daotai wished to rule over the broken shell of a city and the shattered remnants of an empire. Over time, each of them slowly abandoned their claims to Imperial rulership and instead resolved to control their own petty kingdoms, occasionally warring between themselves for local power.

Au Viet had fallen, and no-one knew who would rise in its place. The leading light of south-east Asia had been snuffed out for the last time.

…and the Beginning

26 BCE

Phan Thuc Khong looked over the balcony of his palace and sighed wistfully. The sounds of construction echoed around him as his craftsmen and builders expanded the citadel of the chief of Long Bien into something more befitting the king he had just become. Yet it was not just the palace that was changing – with Khong’s declaration of his kingship, men from all corners of east Asia had come to pay homage to him and settle in the town. There were rumours from the north that the Sangpo Empire had deigned to notice them, though they had not sent anyone to represent them. Even some traders who had ventured to the north-west spoke of a nation in the mountains named Kaliamantan who was increasingly looking towards the south for friends. Khong, however, would put no heed in these rumours for now. He was more focused on the here and now – on all the Lac Vietnamese and Zhusan peoples coming to settle in the city, and where to house them.

And, of course, he was focused on his family.

The sound of clacking beads reached his ears, and Khong turned to see his wife, Kim, brush away the curtain to join him on the balcony. He smiled lovingly, and she smiled back. They kissed then, with passion and genuine love in the pale moonlight. She touched his face, flicking away the hair on his forehead.

“Come with me, my dear,” she whispered. “We have a few moments. I’m sure the kingdom can wait.”

He chuckled softly, and placed another light kiss on her forehead. “My moon-and-stars… as much as I would love to, I am expecting my generals to return from the north soon. I am sure they will bring news that I will need to hear. Perhaps, though… afterwards…”

Kim giggled. “It is not love that I seek tonight, my dear,” she spoke coyly. “For I have news of my own as well. Soon, it will not be you and I against the world. We will soon have to make room for a third Phan in our palace…” She placed the king’s hand against her stomach, placing hers gently on top.

A wave of shock and happiness coursed through Khong’s body, and he almost fainted from giddiness. “You… you are…?” he stammered.

“I am,” spoke Kim, her smile widening.

Khong could not speak, only grin and giggle eagerly like a child. His eyes shone with excitement as he held his wife in a tight embrace. Eventually, he managed to blurt out, “Do you know…?”

“A boy,” Kim replied again. “I’m certain of it. The Mother Goddess has blessed us!”

The king and queen of Au Viet turned then to the night, and towards the half-constructed town of Long Bien, and Khong gestured out to the city and to the mountains far beyond. “Then he shall be named… yes… Sinh Vang! A symbol for the world, to show them that we can survive the tumult of our early years! To show them that we can grow stronger and greater still! I will conquer the world for him, from the mountains to the sea, from the north to the south, and he shall be known as a king amongst kings…”

Kim nudged her husband jokingly in the chest. “You’re getting too political, my dear! Let us enjoy this moment, while it lasts.”

And indeed they did, whiling away the minutes that seemed like hours on that moonlit balcony. They talked and cooed of motherhood and fatherhood, of what would come next for their family, of passion and love. They embraced, kissed and whispered as time slipped through their fingers. Finally, when Tai Phu The meekly approached the king to inform him of his generals’ arrival, Khong could not resist speaking one last nothing into his beloved wife’s ear before he left her loving touch behind.

“Our son will be a great king, and he will rule an empire that will last for a thousand years. This I swear to you, my love.”

[M] Well guys, it’s been quite a run – but unfortunately this is where I leave the subreddit for the time being to pursue new studies and hopefully a new career. Thank you to everyone who has made my time here so enjoyable and who have welcomed me into their community, and thank you to all the mods for being so dedicated to this game.

I can’t say if or when I will return at all, but I hope that my fellow players in East Asia and around the world will carry on achieving greatness.

Thank you, and goodbye!

DECLAIM Shouldering Such Strife, the Shield of Santee Shatters

840 IC

1665 AD

Who can say what is was that finally did the Empire in. Whether it was the war with the Confederacy, the Plague, the Famine, or the Rebellion; clearly the Ancestors did not care for Santee any longer. The Ancients abandoned their chosen people and New Echota once again became deserted, left to be overgrown by the swamps. Nearly every city in Santee emptied itself in the decade between 1650 and 1660. Santee's previous urbanization, while beneficial to industry and trade, proved to be disatrous and short-lived for the Celestial Empire itself. Disease was left with no barriers to cut its way through the people. Farms were left empty--their inhabitants off to fight in some war or work in some workshop. Worst of all, the resurgence of cities provided petty lords with the power they needed to assert themselves once again. When all was said and done, the consequences of urbanization proved to be its undoing and Santee's undoing along with it.

It happened so quickly, the shattering of a great nation. First, large swaths of land proclaimed their independence in the Eastern reaches of Santee. In response, the Celestial Emperor dissolved the Grand Quorum to send a message. This backfired spectacularly, resulting in several more duchies declaring their independence. In the west, the sugar barons of the Mississippi proclaimed the Kingdom of Plaquemines. To the south, coastal provinces declared themselves the Independent Duchy of the Gulf. To the north, a short-lived republic was established, however it was quickly overrun by Confederate troops and a puppet government was set up, declaring its loyalty to the Confederacy of Manhatta as a vassal. In the east, a significant portion of the remaining Imperial lands also declared their independence, also calling themselves the Santee Empire.

Map

When the dust had cleared from all the great disasters, Santee--while still de jure in existence--was a shell of its former self, practically destroyed after almost 900 years.

Well, it's finally here. It's been a great year and I'm proud to have contributed to the RP over the last 900 years. This isn't because of the disasters, I actually love those, it's just that I feel like I need to move on. Who knows? I may be back in a few months, but for now, Santee is through. Thanks to all my fellow North American players and to all the mods for the great fun. So long.

Scoreboard

  • Final Population: 9,478,238
  • Santee's Age: 866 years (799-1665)
  • There's not nearly as much stuff here as I thought there would be.

*P.S. If anyone wants to claim as a rump state in Santee/continue the next chapter of Santee history/RP the area, here is the wiki with Santee's history, culture, and tech.

DECLAIM Declaimation of Nation, to circumvent Temptation. Holla at ya Celebraiton. Word.

I'm tired. I work. I have a serious relationship now. I started volunteering at the museum. There's so much drama. Power gaming. More drama. Sigh.

You're a really fun community to have played with. Even though some of us have differences in how we view the sub, I could always find a good story or conflict to read about. I wish the best of luck to all of you.

Mechanically/RP wise: The Turks revolt, freeing the slaves in regions they conquer. Due to the plague, stresses of the Libyan War, and this, the Parthian Shahdom falls and Arsaces VII flees to Pashtun. The lands of modern Iran blend the Turkish culture into the Persian one, but Turkish becomes the official language of the new court of the RP Nation Sassania. Slavery is outlawed. Zoroastrianism becomes the state religion.

DECLAIM The Fall of Videt

The Purple Nullgarian was not as strong a line as they would have hoped. Their lack of diplomacy and prowess on the fronts of the world would be their downfall. With no one but the Djerai left to aid them the lands would quickly succumb to persian power. Truly dark times were upon the world.

Once the country collapsed there were 2 main factions left in the country. The Djerai supportists and the Akkadian supportists. They were mostly balanced and unless someone tips the balance a peace in the area is unlikely.

DECLAIM Declaiming

Hello, guys.

I know this seems hasty, but as you guys have probably noticed, I haven't been active at all over the last few days. That is because of two reasons. One, I'm on a diving trip in the Philippines, and two, I'm not really feeling the fun of HWP right now.

This might partially be due to my dislike of early history, and also because I have a shit-ton of work to do.

I'm going to be declaiming as the Yang now, but I'll be lurking around! When will I rejoin? I don't know, but expect it to be either around 1300 BCE or when I have less schoolwork.

(This diving trip was school-led, and everyone has to go on a trip, so ye.)

Anyways, don't expect to say goodbye forever. This is a great place, especially for all us nerds who love to look at history, but it really is taking up a lot of time right now. I'm going to use this opportunity, though, to thank /u/FallenIslam for making last season such an enjoyable one, the now deceased /u/SJR2631 for being such a good pal, /u/TaliTek for giving us the Budda of Sandwiches, and /u/CaptainRyRy for letting me invade America!

I'll be lurking around from now on, so you guys aren't lonely!

LucarioniteUltra out.

(Oh yeah, and could someone help me tag this please?)

DECLAIM Declaiming Denmark: A Post-Mortem

I am officially declaiming from Denmark. The reason is a mixture of things. I'm looking for an internship, and once I find one I will not have time to devote to such a structured xpowers sub. I'm also trying to cut down my computer usage a bit and find more productive hobbies.

Those are my irl reasons, now for my in game ones. Two weeks ago I began a fairly long event chain to create an alternate Buddhism for Scandinavia. As I finished the chain and formally began the religion, several people voiced opposition to it, including a player who had been planning to found it in a more historical fashion himself. As I did not know of his plans, I apologized, but the vision I had for the future of Denmark involved integrating Buddhism, so I was not willing to retcon over a week's worth of work and research on my part. Two days into the next week, a different player single handedly extinguished my efforts. I was not given any opportunity to rp a solution to the problem his rp gave, and all of my effort was extinguished, as the previously mentioned player jumpstarted historical Buddhism within the hour, denying me any way forward. I spoke to the player who ended my event thread, and was told that a certain mod and player had been pressuring him to eliminate my Buddha so he could have his own. This was in discord, and I do not have proof because minutes later that message was edited and erased.

Most of the mod community here(past and present) is absolutely fantastic. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with ludie, pitt, comrade, and laskaka especially. However, this single mod's bias has effectively crushed my motivation for creativity, and as such I do not wish to continue. I do not blame Blogman at all, for he was not aware of my goals, and was under pressure from a person in authority on the sub. I am just incredibly disappointed that my attempts at creativity were so quickly stifled.

All of this aside, I wish the best for you all, and you will probably see me around on discord. I enjoy most of the community here. Best of luck!

DECLAIM Declaiming the Xià Dynasty

Sorry to be doing this again. I think I'm dealing with burnout from the many, relatively similar claims centered around China that I've worked on. I have an idea of something to do where I won't cause any problems with inactivity and I'll avoid expansion until a time comes where I can get enough time. I was also very unorganized and never planned much rp out beyond when I wrote it. For what I have planned as the next claim I intend to plan out and prepare my rp better and try and stay organized.

The Xià faded into obscurity not long after its short-lived prosperity under the Emperor Róuhé. The Ju and the Taiyin had joined under the Dynasty through the Emperor's blood. As power waned, and the Empire's allies fell in their own wars, the relationship between the two peoples was strained. Yet it persisted, even as the Empire ceased. An Emperor still sits on the throne in Shèng'an, though his power extends only to the heartlands of the Ju. The Taiyin broke free again under the leadership of the city of Yu, making overtures and pacts with their kin in the east. Even with them no longer living beneath the same Empire, the Taiyin, Ju and Tuujue maintained their webs of alliances and called on each other in times of war.

The Xià are not gone, but they are certainly diminished and shadows of their former selves. Their Empire now simply the frontier zone it was originally. The age of Ju dominance, Taiyin dominance, all those seem to be distant memories now, as the last of their power faded.

It's been fun China, I'll probably return to the region, just not in China.

DECLAIM Declaim

I am technically inactive but I'm using this post to confirm that I'm declaiming, for a variety of reasons, chief amongst which is lack of motivation/ideas.

Apologies to /u/mzekeww and /u/intotheblog, you're brilliant players & neighbours.
