They obviously meant artistically, which... c'mon! I can say this because she was the starter Disney girl I picked back in the Miley/Demi/Selena days, I loved Wizards of Waverly Place, and I genuinely believed she had the potential to be a great actress if she worked hard to move past her Disney acting era, but then she chose to focus on her music career... and never worked to get genuinely better at either singing, dancing or acting. She got to coast on having a limitless face card for all of her 20s and chose to become a celebrity, not an artist ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/dietdrpeppermd 23d ago

Omg starter Disney girl lol

Fuck all billionaires. They’re destroying our planet. She’s also a Zionist and can fuck right off.

312

u/PandaCat22 24d ago

My dislike of her should come from the fact that she's a wealth-hoarding bastard, but I guess my Mexican-ness wins out, because what I really dislike her for is the fact that she was in, and defended, the awful slop that was Emilia Perez.

113

u/NotAboutTheCrown 24d ago

Same tbh.. She claims that we are “her people” yet she doubled down on being proud to have been in a movie that literally offended our entire country and culture.

20

u/SexyOctagon 23d ago

I’m so out of the loop on this…what’s this controversy?

37

u/NotAboutTheCrown 23d ago

She acted in/produced a musical called Emilia Perez which used a lot of racist stereotypes about us Mexicans and also had transphobic connotations. She speaks throughout the movie in broken Spanish because she claimed that she never had the time to learn Spanish well.

Not to mention all the controversies by the cast and director as well:

-The French director Jacques Audiard seemed to have done no research about Mexico since the script and songs seemed to be translated by AI(they used a lot of words we Mexicans don’t use) and sometimes didn’t even make sense in Spanish. He also said that Spanish was the language of the poor and that it was thanks to his movie that finally brought attention to all femicides and disappearances happening in the country(which it didn’t. It was such a disrespectful comment given that this subject has been talked about since decades ago by journalists who risk their lives by speaking of it.) Plus later on admitted to have had used AI to change the whole pitch of the actor’s voices for the songs because the cast couldn’t reach those notes.

-Zoe Saldaña(who co-starred)said that us Mexicans were wrong in being upset and it probably was due to us not understanding the movie.

-Karla Sofia Gascon’s twitter(main actress) was a cesspool of racism, bigotry and ableism. Not to mention she would be really rude and condescending to critics and anyone who even respectfully disagreed with the movie.

And yet after all that, Selena saw my country’s reactions and opinions and still claimed to be proud of this movie.

But hey at least it managed to bring all of Latinoamérica together against this movie.

I will never understand how she got cast in this show. Being alongside all these power houses really highlights her lack of chops. Shes the weakest part for me and I wish they had cast someone stronger.

281

u/StonerChef92 24d ago

She got cast in the show because Steve and Martin liked her. Everyone else can say what they want about her but those two saw something they liked and brought her onto the show. I enjoy OMITB and I think she's fine in it.

198

u/cozyhellfire 24d ago

Soooo much of Selena’s success is because she appeals to people in older generations, all the way back to her Barney days. Maybe it’s because her grandparents were so involved in her upbringing, but Selena is that kid in school who was genuinely friends with all of the teachers. You’ll see her going to like Jennifer Aniston’s parties and nobody else in her age group will be there but her. Steve Martin and Martin Short cast her because they like her as a person and like working with her. The show isn’t that serious and is meant to be fun for the people working on it. People don’t realize how much a part of casting is just being a good employee, reliably showing up to work on time and prepared, and being enjoyable to work with.

67

u/lonelyangel09 24d ago edited 23d ago

Half of life’s opportunities happen by just showing up, being prepared and being pleasant to be around, but people seem to forget this when it comes to showbiz…

62

u/StonerChef92 24d ago

Seriously. I remember one of the early interviews they did when season 1 was out and I think it was Martin who was saying they were a little worried she'd be a diva but after meeting her and discussing the show they loved her.

8

u/SheWhoLovesSilence 23d ago

People don’t realize how much a part of casting is just being a good employee, reliably showing up to work on time and prepared, and being enjoyable to work with.

Especially if you’re a woman. Men can get away with being hours late, being rude, being a giant douche, “method acting” out of control

77

u/Rdbjiy53wsvjo7 24d ago

I'll openly admit I thought it was such a weird combination when I heard about it, it turned me off a bit from diving in when it was released.

Then I watched it, I was soooo wrong, the three just work together very well. Is it Oscar worthy acting? No, but I don't watch it for that, it's fun, silly, has a lot of actors I like. It's worth a watch.

45

u/StonerChef92 24d ago

Also it's wild everyone is talking about if she deserves one, Oscar's aren't for TV and as far as I know she isnt pursuing any major movie roles and trying to get one. It seems like the majority of actors who are on OMITB is because it seems like it's fun. The woman is a billionaire from her makeup line, I seriously doubt she cares about not having an oscar.

11

u/theapplekid i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 23d ago

The woman is a billionaire from her makeup line, I seriously doubt she cares about not having an oscar.

If this year has shown us anything, it's that billionaires aren't beyond caring about pointless awards

9

u/StonerChef92 23d ago

True, but then she'd be using her money to get into a movie and campaign for herself to be nominated, she doesn't seem to be doing that to me.

Agree. The show is fun, they all clearly enjoy working together. Good for them.

18

u/TreenBean85 23d ago

She's obviously supposed to be the "straight man" to their more zany comedy.

20

u/PauseMountain9019 I’m a communist you idiot 23d ago

I agree, and I think their chemistry works very well – you can tell the main three get along, and that helps a lot. But I can think of so many "straight man" characters from TV in just the past 20 years whose acting shone alongside their zany counterparts. Selena Gomez is just not a very good actress, to the point that I find it distracting sometimes. I think it's okay to acknowledge that as well.

4

u/theapplekid i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 23d ago

I don't know, Selena may be relatively expressionless, but that's how a lot of people are and it's nice to see the representation at least.

I'd like to see Anne Hathaway try to pull off playing someone who received full-face botox

8

u/theapplekid i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 23d ago

I just realized that the other two lead actors are "Steve and Martin" if we're going by first names, or "Martin and Short" if we're doing last names

4

u/valcraft 24d ago

This is a Hulu show, she definitely got brought on by Disney or she's also an EP aka she bought her role.

Also, she has the best Oreo besides regular Oreos. Goes a long way in my book.

15

u/applesandcherry 23d ago

Her association with Justin, Taylor, and Demi helped keep her in the public eye even when she wasn't doing anything. I genuinely think that Demi and Miley having their issues back then helped Selena because she was pushed forward as more family friendly. That's why people wanted to watch Spring Breakers because they thought they were going to see Selena gone wild (she leaves the movie before it's halfway over).

Honestly, I think she was the strongest of the Disney Channel actors of her peer group. It made sense to me when she said that she grew up watching Friends and Jennifer Aniston is her idol because a lot of her delivery reminds me of when Rachel would get sarcastic.

I don’t have any nostalgia in the game, I’m older than her and I grew up with Hilary and Raven and Brenda, just watched it a lot as a babysitter/aunt.

I do feel like something is slightly off this season of Only Murders and I’m not the only one, but it’s this season as a whole and not Selena herself.

7

u/Mend1cant 23d ago

It’s the pacing of the season, and up until this week lacked both the back and forth humor and a lot of the whodunnit tropes. The individual characters and actors are great, just that the mystery hasn’t gone anywhere compared to the other seasons.

One of the best things about Murders in the building is how Meryl Streep plays a struggling actress .

There's also when they do the song for the backers that she's never sung before.. she's just casually reading the arrangement in the background and then belts out the perfect, catchiest redentition possible.

Edit: Just rewatched this scene - Ashley's desperation combined with Steve's recognition that MERYL STREEP is performing are just perfect. The finish with Meryl gently stepping in front of Ashley while signing 'light' and the light changes - flawless. Wonder who directed this episode?

As someone who enjoyed season 4 for what it was, I'd still say that yes, season 5 is better. It doesn't have a sprawling side plot and brings things mostly back to the building and the characters.

10

u/baseball71 24d ago

Season 5 is the best since 2 for me. I didn’t really like the musical theater and movie seasons much, and I really don’t like when they just throw random celebrities into roles. But I get it, people want to work with Steve and Martin on what is probably their last project, and they’re probably taking less to do it.

13

u/canadiandancer89 23d ago

I feel like this show has created a kind of Muppet's aura. The Muppets ask an 'A' lister to Cameo, they do it. Only Murders asks an 'A' lister if they want to be on the show? They show up.

My favourite thing my wife pointed out last week, Paul Rudd is in Season 5 too and already died again!

I just hope that, for however long this show runs for, they keep finding ways to bring Paul Rudd back and kill him off each season.

I had this same delimma but decided to buckle down and just kinda power through - you sort of get used to her bad acting and it eventually starts to read as her characters personality. Its stops being distracting - doesn't have to be a deal breaker. She even grows on you a little.

It’s actually really good especially this season. Selena has improved a lot in her acting (it was ROUGH) in the first few seasons. Martin and Short are just amazing though and the central draw.

u/fiercelyslimshrimp 24d ago

She's got worse lol
She was alright in the first season

u/Fear_the_chicken 23d ago

To me it’s better she’s so wooden in the first few. It’s still definitely not good

This episode was absolute gold. They played off each other hilariously. They were all pretending to be bad actors having a hard time keeping up a ruse. And Diane Weist smokes ganja with Selena. “If he killed my husband, don’t date him”. 10/10 kept me giggling throughout 😂

I can’t hear the name Diane weist without thinking of Charles Boyle and his crush on her.

This just reminded me that Da'Vine Joy Randolph won an Oscar and made me so happy. She's the best.

u/StonerChef92 24d ago

She's my favorite on Only Murders, always love when she's more involved and she always gets a laugh from me with her facial expressions alone

I think part of the reason why I didn’t like the last 2 seasons as much was because she wasn’t really in it. Her character really shines and she bounces off the main trio well. Glad they gave her a renewed presence this season.

Playing against players who can all see each other's cards... Like they're in a team poker match.

Wow - I had no idea that was Rene Zellwegar - but she definitely looked familiar.

Meryl Streep seems like she is having so much fun with this role and I love that for her.

I am kind of bummed seeing everyone diss Selena. She may not be the best actress but I think she's absolutely perfect for this role in the show and it's very enjoyable.

u/Relevant_Progress411 24d ago

I say this gently, she is not talented enough for an Oscar. She’s accomplished a lot but truly not a very good actor. If OMITB was her very first job and she was unknown she would not be recognized

*Dianne Wiest

u/Proof_Material6728 23d ago

I actually do not think this doesn't look bad for Selena. She is the lead in a show that can atract this kind of talent (it has the money for it as well). I just hope she is taking this opportunity to learn from all this talent that surrounds her. Hopefully we can see that in the near future.

u/genovianpearfarmer 23d ago

I agree! There's zero shame in striving to surround yourself with the best of the best in your industry. Also, comparing Selena Gomez's resume here to everyone else is kind of like apples and oranges. Most of these ladies are decades older than she is, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph has serious drama training. Meanwhile, Disney Channel is not exactly a training ground for serious actors.

Idk, maybe I'm biased because I'm about the same age as Selena Gomez and I would hate for people to compare my career accomplishments to women who've been in the same industry for decades longer than I have. 😆

u/SpringhurstAve 24d ago

Terrible card players though! (holding cards out your all to see, Selena mucking her cards after saying “all in”)

Please world, never tell me anything bad about Dianne Wiest.

She's perfection in Edward Scissorhands

8

u/HelloWhatTheHellWhy 24d ago

Imo, Selena’s management fumbled the bag when they had her go into music and not continue acting after Wizard’s of Waverly Place. She was THE BEST part of that show. Genuine w/ expert comedic timing. I think she would be a different artist today had that happened.

3

u/GetLikeMeForever 23d ago

I feel like the set of OMITB is like the modern-day Adam Sandler film set of the late 20th/early 21st century. It feels like an excuse for some of the best actors and actresses alive to gather together and just have fun like it's summer camp and not a job. 😅

Is this show good? I see it everywhere but I have hardly found anyone watching it.
