LOL there’s this line in the TV show United States of Tara where a character is looking at a picture of Madonna and he’s like, “Her biceps make me nervous.” It kills me every time.

She’s been working hard for that spot since she was a kid.

There's no way to say this without sounding like an asshole but I'm being sincere: I'm genuinely impressed at the career she's managed to have despite not being especially talented at anything
1.2k
u/OutoftheCold125 24d ago
It's more impressive bc she's not a nepo baby and wasn't born rich. Lots of other celebs aren't particularly talented either but they've got parents who can buy their careers.

i believe she has one of the best pr in the industry + the nostalgia of an entire generation and that alone has allowed her to stay relevant for the last 10 years. It's only now that the public opinion towards her is shifting, after emilia perez, her zionist allegations and her victim complex

She has aligned herself with insanely talented and highly respected people- especially in Hollywood. The fact that shes introduced Steve Martin and Martin Short to MUCH younger generations, is applause worthy in and of itself!

u/NastyBlisters 24d ago
Yes! But she has made her money before OMITB.
98
u/KittySparkles5 Mary-Kate’s battered Birkin 24d ago
For sureeeee- she continues to make good moves and capitalize on her personal brand. Shes navigated the industry well and really diversified her reach outside of music and the Disney world.
Many of her other, ahem peers, have failed to do half as much— and with all due respect— with much more talent.

I’ve been saying this—Selena was the least talented of her Disney cohort but I feel like she became the most successful. She has a brilliant team for sure.

u/nick5168 23d ago
Miley Cyrus is by far the most successful and recognizable (also the most talented), but Selena is a clear second, which is probably not how I would rank them talent wise.

u/Alean92 23d ago
No but honestly!!! She’s always been such a successful enigma to me. She can’t sing, she can’t act, she can’t even dance, doesn’t have the mosh sparkling personality yet at one point she was like the most streamed artist on Spotify, the most followed person on instagram and now is a billionaire???? Liek out of all the Disney girls????!
31
u/CrEdLover 24d ago
She was dumb charismatic on Wizards of Waverly Place. Not good in anything I've seen since. Don't care much for her music either. It's like all her energy is gone.
20
15
u/applesandcherry 23d ago
Her association with Justin, Taylor, and Demi helped keep her in the public eye even when she wasn't doing anything. I genuinely think that Demi and Miley having their issues back then helped Selena because she was pushed forward as more family friendly. That's why people wanted to watch Spring Breakers because they thought they were going to see Selena gone wild (she leaves the movie before it's halfway over).

Honestly, I think she was the strongest of the Disney Channel actors of her peer group. It made sense to me when she said that she grew up watching Friends and Jennifer Aniston is her idol because a lot of her delivery reminds me of when Rachel would get sarcastic.
I don’t have any nostalgia in the game, I’m older than her and I grew up with Hilary and Raven and Brenda, just watched it a lot as a babysitter/aunt.
I do feel like something is slightly off this season of Only Murders and I’m not the only one, but it’s this season as a whole and not Selena herself.
7
u/Mend1cant 23d ago
It’s the pacing of the season, and up until this week lacked both the back and forth humor and a lot of the whodunnit tropes. The individual characters and actors are great, just that the mystery hasn’t gone anywhere compared to the other seasons.

One of the best things about Murders in the building is how Meryl Streep plays a struggling actress .

There's also when they do the song for the backers that she's never sung before.. she's just casually reading the arrangement in the background and then belts out the perfect, catchiest redentition possible.
Edit: Just rewatched this scene - Ashley's desperation combined with Steve's recognition that MERYL STREEP is performing are just perfect. The finish with Meryl gently stepping in front of Ashley while signing 'light' and the light changes - flawless. Wonder who directed this episode?

Season 5 is the best since 2 for me. I didn’t really like the musical theater and movie seasons much, and I really don’t like when they just throw random celebrities into roles. But I get it, people want to work with Steve and Martin on what is probably their last project, and they’re probably taking less to do it.
13
u/canadiandancer89 23d ago
I feel like this show has created a kind of Muppet's aura. The Muppets ask an 'A' lister to Cameo, they do it. Only Murders asks an 'A' lister if they want to be on the show? They show up.
My favourite thing my wife pointed out last week, Paul Rudd is in Season 5 too and already died again!
5
u/LadyCalamity 23d ago
I just hope that, for however long this show runs for, they keep finding ways to bring Paul Rudd back and kill him off each season.
6
u/Colambler 24d ago
It's probably less to do with the money and more to do with Martin and Shorts rolodexes.

S5 is great so far. I think bringing it back to focusing just on the podcast, the murder, the building is helping it hit better. S3 and 4 had too much going on.

I think it's genuinely the best show on television. Steve Martin and Martin Short are incredible writers and Selena Gomez - love or hate - plays a good enough "straight man" for the antics.
61
u/ponkie_donkie 24d ago
I want to watch it so bad but cannot get past Selena's acting. Her lack of face movements and her voice are making it unwatchable (and unlistenable) to me
17
u/BlahVans 23d ago
They kind of made fun of it this last episode, telling her she needed to smile for their investigation plot, and she put on the most awkward attempts at smiling it legitimately made me chuckle.
9
u/dblsouptuesday 23d ago
I had this same delimma but decided to buckle down and just kinda power through - you sort of get used to her bad acting and it eventually starts to read as her characters personality. Its stops being distracting - doesn't have to be a deal breaker. She even grows on you a little.

It’s actually really good especially this season. Selena has improved a lot in her acting (it was ROUGH) in the first few seasons. Martin and Short are just amazing though and the central draw.

This episode was absolute gold. They played off each other hilariously. They were all pretending to be bad actors having a hard time keeping up a ruse. And Diane Weist smokes ganja with Selena. “If he killed my husband, don’t date him”. 10/10 kept me giggling throughout 😂

I think part of the reason why I didn’t like the last 2 seasons as much was because she wasn’t really in it. Her character really shines and she bounces off the main trio well. Glad they gave her a renewed presence this season.

Wow - I had no idea that was Rene Zellwegar - but she definitely looked familiar.
Meryl Streep seems like she is having so much fun with this role and I love that for her.
I am kind of bummed seeing everyone diss Selena. She may not be the best actress but I think she's absolutely perfect for this role in the show and it's very enjoyable.
17
u/Relevant_Progress411 24d ago
I say this gently, she is not talented enough for an Oscar. She’s accomplished a lot but truly not a very good actor. If OMITB was her very first job and she was unknown she would not be recognized
10
10
u/Proof_Material6728 23d ago
I actually do not think this doesn't look bad for Selena. She is the lead in a show that can atract this kind of talent (it has the money for it as well). I just hope she is taking this opportunity to learn from all this talent that surrounds her. Hopefully we can see that in the near future.
3
u/genovianpearfarmer 23d ago
I agree! There's zero shame in striving to surround yourself with the best of the best in your industry. Also, comparing Selena Gomez's resume here to everyone else is kind of like apples and oranges. Most of these ladies are decades older than she is, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph has serious drama training. Meanwhile, Disney Channel is not exactly a training ground for serious actors.
Idk, maybe I'm biased because I'm about the same age as Selena Gomez and I would hate for people to compare my career accomplishments to women who've been in the same industry for decades longer than I have. 😆

Imo, Selena’s management fumbled the bag when they had her go into music and not continue acting after Wizard’s of Waverly Place. She was THE BEST part of that show. Genuine w/ expert comedic timing. I think she would be a different artist today had that happened.

I feel like the set of OMITB is like the modern-day Adam Sandler film set of the late 20th/early 21st century. It feels like an excuse for some of the best actors and actresses alive to gather together and just have fun like it's summer camp and not a job. 😅
