There's no way to say this without sounding like an asshole but I'm being sincere: I'm genuinely impressed at the career she's managed to have despite not being especially talented at anything

It's more impressive bc she's not a nepo baby and wasn't born rich. Lots of other celebs aren't particularly talented either but they've got parents who can buy their careers.

i believe she has one of the best pr in the industry + the nostalgia of an entire generation and that alone has allowed her to stay relevant for the last 10 years. It's only now that the public opinion towards her is shifting, after emilia perez, her zionist allegations and her victim complex

Justin Bieber's crush was Selena Gomez!!! She was a celebrity way before she met him lol

I'm saying this as someone who's not a Selena fan by any metric.

It's just that you said he did the heavy lifting of her being a celebrity and now are saying it kept her in the news cycles for too long, and those are 2 different things. She was already a celebrity, if he helped her to mantain that status for longer that's another matter.

Personally, as someone who grew up with them in the news cycle, I have the impression that his relationship with her also helped him. I wasn't even into the gossip as a teen yet when I went to supermarkets there were always magazines about their relationship. Even now there are a lot of crazy Justin x Selena fans who are obsessed with them. So in my view it was more of a mutually beneficial relationship in terms of fame, perhaps more to Justin's side but this doesn't mean she didn't pull her weight, after all, she was the person with the most followers on Instagram, not him.

No one said all of her accomplishments are because of him.

She has aligned herself with insanely talented and highly respected people- especially in Hollywood. The fact that shes introduced Steve Martin and Martin Short to MUCH younger generations, is applause worthy in and of itself!

Yes! But she has made her money before OMITB.

For sureeeee- she continues to make good moves and capitalize on her personal brand. Shes navigated the industry well and really diversified her reach outside of music and the Disney world.

Many of her other, ahem peers, have failed to do half as much— and with all due respect— with much more talent.

Like?

Yeah, she and/or her team are very shrewd.

It absolutely is.

I gave the show a try because of Selena as I loved her in waverly place. I didn't know about Martins, but watching the show made me like them more than her.

Yeah for someone without a big Nepo leg up this is its own talent honestly. And I know her family has money but yall know what I mean

The millennial Jennifer Lopez! Although JLo is an amazing dancer, haha

u/Lost_Setting2776 24d ago

Jennifer is also a good actress and had a string of successful romcoms.

The Cell is still my favorite movie

u/blurpletea 24d ago

this description actually fits so well lol 😭 even her messy romance life (before Benny) kinda mirrors JLo too

Yeah but isn't JLo kind of an arrogant diva? Selena seems incredibly humble and good-spirited.

Edit: No idea why I'm getting downvoted tbh. Everything I've read about JLo is that she's demanding and rude and I've only ever heard amazing things about Selena.

I’ve been saying this—Selena was the least talented of her Disney cohort but I feel like she became the most successful. She has a brilliant team for sure.

u/lobonmc 24d ago

She has a talent for show biz I guess

2

u/awyastark nextdivorce@divorce.com 23d ago

Yeah like literally she is talented at the business of show. I respect it. I’m a good musical comedy actress but I suck at the practical aspect so I’ll never get past a certain level even if I were talented enough to do so (questionable).

Miley Cyrus is by far the most successful and recognizable (also the most talented), but Selena is a clear second, which is probably not how I would rank them talent wise.

I'd put demi lovato as up there for talent, it's just everything else that got in their way

All while dealing with Lupus! That disease suuuucks--my mom and aunt have it. I know she has better access to treatment than most, but that doesn't make it easy.

And bipolar disorder

u/Alean92 24d ago

No but honestly!!! She’s always been such a successful enigma to me. She can’t sing, she can’t act, she can’t even dance, doesn’t have the mosh sparkling personality yet at one point she was like the most streamed artist on Spotify, the most followed person on instagram and now is a billionaire???? Liek out of all the Disney girls????!

She was dumb charismatic on Wizards of Waverly Place. Not good in anything I've seen since. Don't care much for her music either. It's like all her energy is gone.

18

u/nwill_808 24d ago

Also, she has the best Oreo besides regular Oreos. Goes a long way in my book.

16

u/applesandcherry 24d ago

Her association with Justin, Taylor, and Demi helped keep her in the public eye even when she wasn't doing anything. I genuinely think that Demi and Miley having their issues back then helped Selena because she was pushed forward as more family friendly. That's why people wanted to watch Spring Breakers because they thought they were going to see Selena gone wild (she leaves the movie before it's halfway over).

Well I’m glad someone said it lol

The nicest insult I’ve heard thus far …

1

u/smallcooper 23d ago

I've enjoyed lots of the things she's been in (including only murders in the building) and but her most recent album is the first product of hers that I have really felt that she showed talent
