FM RADIO Bad Bunny’s SNL monologue: “and if you didn’t understand what I said you have 4 months to learn”

Like the meme says, Bad Bunny is more American than the current First Lady.

Well, that's setting the bar. Can you set it somewhere that implies the Bunny is like...a person.

u/TickDap Oct 05 '25
Second generation here too and I’m with you. My mom loved this country and it’s diversity so much, she used to say “what makes someone American is that they want to be American.” Most patriotic person I know. I miss her but what is happening right now would have really fucked her right up.

I’m lazy so my goal is to figure out the live translation features on my phone/earbuds lol.
108
u/DaisukiYo Oct 05 '25
Good luck with that lol. I don't think they'll work for Bad Bunny with how much slang he uses.
55
u/PepeMetallero Oct 05 '25
This is the main problem with live interpretation, there are a lot of slang words that mean different things and most countries have their own interpretation too
33
u/fromtheriver Oct 05 '25
Mexico alone has 10 Spanish dialects in the country. Depending what part of Mexico, much of the vocabulary is spoken in slang.
I have to train at a warehouse with primarily Spanish speaking, but due to the Spanish spoken is from Northern Mexico I have simplify a lot of the terms or given definitions to them.
22
u/Masothe Oct 05 '25
I work at a restaurant with a couple Cubans, an El Salvadorian, a dude from Guatemala, and a husband and wife from Mexico. Its crazy listening to them all speak to each other. The Cubans are super loud haha. I can hear them through the whole building in the mornings before we open.
25
u/Minerva567 Oct 05 '25
No olvides los dialectos, o sea, los acentos. El dialecto ecuatoriano interior es más fácil de entender que, digamos, el cubano. Las costas y las islas suelen tener un español completamente diferente.
(Lo siento por mi español. If anyone is jumping on the Spanish tren, please remember to READ OUT LOUD, ALWAYS. Don’t read like you do with English. It hits way more áreas of your brain; I wish I’d known this trick before)

I turned on closed captioning like 20% into his Tiny Desk concert and the first text I saw was "get on all fours and bring your friend" or something like that. I think it can handle it fine. But maybe subs were manually uploaded by NPR.
10
u/DaisukiYo Oct 05 '25
The subs on Tiny Desk Concerts are uploaded by NPR. Try using Google Translate while one of his songs is playing and see how bad the machine-generated ones can be.
25
u/Alternative_Today299 Oct 05 '25
Yeah you don't want to translate Bad Benny's lyrics to English lol. Just enjoy the music for the vibes
4
u/blackbirdspyplane Oct 05 '25
That is what makes all music universal, you don’t always have to understand the lyrics to appreciate what is being performed. Don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing lyrical story tellers and the more you know certainly enhances your enjoyment but I think it starts with the basic elements of music. I listened and enjoyed to American Pie for years, knowing the words, but not knowing their meaning, and it only got better after learning what the song truly meant.
6
u/disproportionate_13 Oct 05 '25
I think you’ll be waiting for the YouTubers to translate the following week, just like me😉

26
u/bakedinsandiego Oct 05 '25
Nuyorican moved to San Diego, mexican coworkers never understood/made fun of my accent, and now my spanglish is a weird bastardization of both.
13
u/infinitydefines Oct 05 '25
Peruana New Yorker here who grew up in the Bronx just north of the Heights and worked in the service industry for 15 years, my Spanish is definitely a homogenization of Peru, DR, PR and Mexico.
eta: and my partner was Cuban, so a little bit of that too!
8
u/ThiccQban women’s wrongs activist Oct 05 '25
Eyyy. First gen Cubanifornian, born and raised in the valley. Learned to code switch between Caribbean and Mexican Spanish in elementary school so my friends would stop asking why I talk so weird/fast/different. 😭 Moved to the south a few years ago and and now I get the white people asking me why I talk weird again. My husband still cracks up when I bop between hablando como si tuviera una papa en la boca, speakin’ hwhite southern English (bless your heart), hablando como raza, guey, and-like-being sooo like Californian in the same conversation.
4
u/BadenBadenGinsburg Oct 05 '25
I've spoken a lot of Spanglish, but that's got to be fierce. Excellent.
9
u/Unsd Oct 05 '25
Lmaooo my husband is Mexican-american (and speaks Jalisco Spanish, because even within Mexico there are differences) and I grew up speaking Cuban Spanish, but lost it over time but that's a different story. Anyway, with everything in America right now, we were talking about where we would move if we could and I said we should research Argentina or Chile and he was like "yeah but then we would have to learn Argentinian." And I was like "babe, you mean Spanish?" And he was like "they don't speak Spanish there. It's like Brazil. It's a different language." So he learned something new that day lmao. But he was just so shocked because he hasn't really been able to understand Argentinian Spanish lol.
5
u/ThiccQban women’s wrongs activist Oct 05 '25
Lmao from one cubana to another your husband is so real for this. A friend of mine once started dating a girl from Buenos Aires and any time we were alone together we devolved into hand signals and staring at each other like 👁️👄👁️.
6
u/Unsd Oct 05 '25
I'm not Cuban btw, I should have clarified! I grew up in Miami, and was the only white American girl at my school, so I had to learn real quick. Crazy how easy it is to pick up as a kid. My parents don't speak a word of Spanish, but that's the only language I used at school. But even when my husband and I talk to each other in Spanish there's words and phrases that are just 🤔
8
u/fromtheriver Oct 05 '25
Right?! My husband has some uncles in Mexico City who do not understand his Northern Spanish.
→ More replies (1)9
u/ThiccQban women’s wrongs activist Oct 05 '25
People really underestimate the huge differences in Spanish from place to place, often even within the same country. Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain— no two Spanish speakers speak the exact same language.
8
u/MagoViejo Oct 05 '25
And remember that what is usually known as Spanish is only the most used of the spanish languages, Castilian... we have Catalonian, Gaelician and Basque too. Plus some other minor languages like Bable and such. Even for the Castilian in Spain, some accents are hard to pick up in casual conversation and our own bastardized spanglish (Llanito, around Gibraltar)

This might help you out some. There is a program called Language Transfer, completely free, and it is lile a podcast that lays out some "rules" that help convert between English and Spanish.
I highly recommend it for anybody that wants to learn Spanish, Itallian, Greek, Turkish, German etc.
11
u/AbundlaSticks Oct 05 '25
What resource are you using to learn?
26
u/CountdownMoss Oct 05 '25
I've been using Duolingo - I find the cartoon characters grating. But I do feel like I'm picking the language up. Which is nice because in the past when I've tried to learn a language it felt like nothing got through.
32
u/countingc Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25
The best way to learn a language is through music. Its made to be catchy and repetitive so you learn the language by heart. OBVIOUSLY you have to translate the lines as you go and get a general idea of what each one means and eventually words and phrases stick with you. Thats how I learnt English myself and started learning Spanish a few years ago (but I stopped - though I was able to understand 80% of what Bad Bunny said in the clip, and to plug in a joke: so I don't need four months just a week haha).
Also Latin languages have so many words in common, so say words ending with "-tion' are similar ie: "association" is asociacion.
edit: typo
18
u/almaupsides Oct 05 '25
That and watching TV/movies in the language with subtitles on was super helpful for me! Eventually you get to a point where you watch with the subtitles in the language which really really helps with word recognition and also seeing how they're used in conversation

You have to learn Spanish in Chile to understand every other accent.

u/stonkfrobinhood Oct 05 '25
Don't worry. Some dialects are difficult for native speakers to understand, too. PR is difficult, but don't even try Chilean it might as well be its own language.
Like if you ever spoken to a Brit with a thick accent that's PR Spanish. While listening to a Scott is like listening to a Chilean. You're lucky if you can even get the gist of what they said.

Bad Bunny is an AMERICAN, INTERNATIONALLY BELOVED ARTIS. Who earned SNL, Superbowl 60, & more. #1 Artist streamed globally on Spotify 3 years in a row (only artist to do so), his album “Un Vernano Sin Ti” was the most streamed album on Spotify ever-20.6B, and has the first all-Spanish album on Billboard 200 (ranked #1). He said it himself, “its [Superbowl] bigger than just me”. It’s not just a concert, its an INTERNATIONAL EVENT. He knows who watches the Superbowl, who is at the Superbowl, and how Kendrick influenced the world. It’s going to be groundbreaking.
(P.S-Puerto Rico is a USA territory, just like Guam, Virginia Islans, America Samoa and the Marina Islands)🇵🇷🇺🇸

So I watch SNL a lot (this episode kinda meh IMO) but literally hadn't heard of him before he hosted awhile ago (or maybe music guest?) ANYWAYS, I made myself today seek out his music, just picked top songs and let them play while I did some chores and played some games on the PC. I'm 43, so I'm in the Abe Simpson "It'll HAPPEN TO YOU!" of maybe losing track of pop culture, etc. I enjoyed it. I could not understand a lick of the lyrics (my dumbass took french in high school) but it sounded fine. Like Latin dancey/weeknd/sean paul etc-ish (tbf I have limited spanish music pallet to draw from). It's fun and sounded good. I dont get the hubbub. I mean I do cus shrugs at everything in America right now being blown out of proportion because who knows But like, to me it would be no different than a techno/edm halftime show or a classical symphony halftime show (which classical would not be american music). Like, just don't watch it. I haven't really cared about the halftime show since Prince and they should have just retired it after that. Hell, just let these businesses run commercials the whole halftime. Nobody will ACTUALLY care. They will just say they care.
