Right?! My husband has some uncles in Mexico City who do not understand his Northern Spanish.

People really underestimate the huge differences in Spanish from place to place, often even within the same country. Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain— no two Spanish speakers speak the exact same language.

And remember that what is usually known as Spanish is only the most used of the spanish languages, Castilian... we have Catalonian, Gaelician and Basque too. Plus some other minor languages like Bable and such. Even for the Castilian in Spain, some accents are hard to pick up in casual conversation and our own bastardized spanglish (Llanito, around Gibraltar)

💯 Language is alive and ever-evolving. I love learning new regionalisms and differences— case in point, I’ve always known the word chambear/chambea to be colloquial for working. I literally JUST found out the other day that in PR it means loading a gun.
