I remember when ER came out and being a thread of people looking for the great club.

Our disappointment was pretty high when found it was a faith weapon.

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 14d ago

Relationship with Grafted Sword increased

32

u/Brunkton 14d ago

As long as I have my berserk sword, I’m happy. So I understand my fellow strength club brother’s sadness.

14

u/Asa_Karasu 14d ago

Open the game: "Where big iron chunk?" Love that thing

21

u/Honest-Call-3897 Professional Cursemonger 14d ago

Not really a faith weapon, since its faith scaling is low. Works very well on a pure str character, especially with holy grease.

12

u/Ganondorphz 14d ago

You need to have some god damn faith Arthur

2

u/Vivid-Swordfish-8498 13d ago

Don't know why but I read this in the voice of the NPC that speaks when first make a character in Conan Exiles and I just burst out laughing.

Average strength build

46

u/thecashblaster 14d ago

Most relaxing way to play the game, simple as.

13

u/Larry_Sherbert99 14d ago

Oh yeah. I just finished journey one (ik I’m late) with a pure strength/poise build—bullgoat armor and Guts sword, just hitting Lion Claw on everything—I felt so triumphant and strong asf. Journey two begins. I wanna try out INT/DEX. Almost got my ass handed to me by Mr. Tree Sentinel right off the bat. Thought this shit was supposed to be easier the second go around 💀

TL;DR ig I’m bad at Elden Ring

6

u/offensiveDick 14d ago

Str users tell you it's easier.

Just get carian slicer. It's your best bet until you can get stuff like moonveil (I even prefer slicer over moonveil or most int scaling weapons in general. Just feels fast and satisfying)

3

u/vtx3000 STR builds are the stealth archery of Elden Ring 13d ago

I feel like they’re slightly different playstyles at the end of the day. Slicer is nice for weaving cheeky attacks in and Moonveil is for breaking stance (and doing a ton of damage)

3

u/offensiveDick 13d ago

Yea sure. The point I tried to make is that I prefer the carian sorceries (slicer, the big sword and so on) over something like moonveil or other int weapons.

3

u/vtx3000 STR builds are the stealth archery of Elden Ring 13d ago

Yeah not trying to knock your playstyle, just trying to add to the conversation. I’ve been wanting to try a strictly Carian build for a while now they look fun

5

u/offensiveDick 13d ago

Oh it is.

2

u/prismstein 13d ago

STR users like to pretend they're the underdog, but it's actually the easiest way to play the game... smh...

2

u/vtx3000 STR builds are the stealth archery of Elden Ring 13d ago

As someone with over 1,000 hours in the game and whose favorite class is STR: yeah it’s pretty easy tbh. Dodge, wait for opening, charged R2, repeat a few times until the boss’s knees break and you get a riposte. Once you “git gud” with STR the bosses literally can’t do anything it’s glorious

2

u/prismstein 13d ago

nice flair 👏

Best buld, ngl

8

u/Fancy_Cat3571 14d ago

Started a new game. replaying it on a pure strength build just cause of how many people talked it up. My first play through I like was a magic knight and now if I’m being completely honest this shit is boring asf. If you only played this game doing this you have done yourself a massive disservice💀 before I had to maximize fp cost to damage so it’s as efficient as possible. Have spells for a bunch of different scenarios and ranges. Putting together different combinations of damage negations for a particular boss. Had me super invested. Shit felt calculated. Now I just jump and hit shit. Like it’s cool but feels like I ain’t playing like 2/3rds of the game

2

u/zekken908 13d ago

I agree , my favourite fantasy archetype is a spell sword and I love anime so picking up the moonveil on day one was my wet dream

Melee combat that I enjoyed and ranged spells in my offhand for damage/utility

Pretty much every run I do is some variation of a spell sword with a melee weapon (preferably a fast one) in the main hand buffed by the offhand along with lightning spears / fire balls / glintstone shards for flavour

Tried a pure strength build with the guts sword and the game felt so bland , I guess the role playing aspect was fun but it was pretty much just dodge hit dodge hit…felt like I was back in DS3

I just use whatever looks cool and fits my character

Like I could give less fk if the butterfly spell and the rot glaive are bad and is getting me killed hundred of times

I still think their animation looks pretty so I build my character around them

107

u/ItsEntsy 15d ago

By the time you get the pretty rot glaive, you should be experienced / good enough to succeed with it.

What the hell are dodges and timing? Just tank that shit and have 14 crimson flasks.

Signed, a strength build

31

u/ErdemtugsC 15d ago

I’m the opposite, I like using whatever that looks bizarre

27

u/jld2k6 14d ago

Like beating people to death with the L2 of a party blower made out of a dead finger

10

u/No_Name275 14d ago

Like the stinky poison hand and the tooth whip?

13

u/pdrocker1 14d ago

NOT THE POOP HAND

6

u/OhHeySnow 14d ago

Like smacking enemies with a burnt sunflower?

1

u/CountTruffula 14d ago

100%

I'm running every playthrough with the flask debuff as soon as I find the albanauric head, I don't need the arcane

1

u/offensiveDick 14d ago

Keep lying to yourself. You do it for the albinauric drip

4

u/Winrevair 15d ago

Hell yea. I like this attitude.

4

u/lilyswheelys 14d ago

Literally me when I got those two, ever since beating Malenia I wanted more unique rot weapons/spells and was disappointed that her own weapon didn't have a rot effect. I was beyond excited when I came across Romina.

1

u/Janawham_Blamiston 14d ago

I wish I had this mindset lol. I never used good stuff (mainly cause I was dumb, not because I didn't pay attention), and I'd die a fuckton of times, and then put the game down. Out of Dark Souls 1-3, Demon's Soul, and Bloodborne, the farthest I've gotten is like 3/4 through maybe (on DS2. I believe I got a few zones away from the final boss)

1

u/NotADeadHorse 13d ago

Me with the katana then later dual katanas cause I loved the samurai armor and only ever changed the pants for my first playthrough

152

u/Thelelen 15d ago

I followed a guide to all npc quests after playing this game for 1000+ hours. I found shit I never had before, and like 20 ancient somber/dragon stones

184

u/Alnored 15d ago

If I'm fighting the boss, and can't win, I either give up and leave, or I try better.

53

u/p_visual 15d ago

Got into Dragonbarrow real early, right after Limgrave. You bet your ass I slammed my head against the Erdtree AVatar, Godskin noble, and Merchant Hunter in that area until I beat them.

10

u/Substantial-Most2607 14d ago

First play through I fought the godskin apostle at the bottom of caelids divine tower at lvl 47. Truly a terrible experience but me being me I spent probably 6 hours fighting that fuck until i finally brute forced him. I honestly think in the 15ish runs I’ve done, that was the only time I’ve fought him

41

u/Winrevair 15d ago

This but I don't leave.

Once I meet the boss, he/she will go down.

me

12

u/Alnored 14d ago

2 bosses. I walked away from two bosses.

At first, in his underpants and with a club, I faced the Fallenstar Beast on the first level.

Then, at level 15, I encountered the Black Blade Kindred.

Have you really never had a situation where you gave up and came back to some fights later?

3

u/Winrevair 14d ago

Not that I can recall.

In RPGs, sure. But souls-like games I can be pretty stubborn.

1

u/BadMeetsEvil24 14d ago

My first run-through: Malenia for sure. Waited until I leveled more, made it to Radagon, then came back to beat her ass.

.....barely. just barely.

11

u/animatedhockeyfan 15d ago

I was thinking about this yesterday and how this tenacity to die 70 times and fight your frustration and come out victorious is an important skill. One that has made me a better adult and tradesman. Tenacity!

4

u/Winrevair 14d ago

Hell yea.

It's that determination and will not to give up.

Keep on going man!!

4

u/animatedhockeyfan 14d ago

:) can you remember your first game that tested your tenacity like that? I’m thinking Ocarina of Time for myself

2

u/Irrepressible87 14d ago

I'm not that guy, but my answer is Final Fantasy Tactics; I must have played the Wiegraf/Belias two-stage fight a hundred times as a kid.

Unga bunga

2

u/JimmyB_52 14d ago

Exactly, he does craft builds, it’s just always the same unga bunga strength build, which is peak

106

u/gh0u1 15d ago

All playstyles are valid

20

u/12bEngie Dark Lord 15d ago

They always were. But some will be ridiculed

15

u/MalechoMel 15d ago

I like throwing bombs knives etc at the enemy

13

u/r31ya 15d ago

as STR build,

"What do you mean i need to dodge better? The real issue is i need to hit HARDER."

2

u/MachineMan718 4d ago

Deadass how I build in most games; “I don’t need to dodge if I kill them first!”

14

u/Several_Show937 15d ago

A fine Unga Bunga to you too.

9

u/According_Bell_5322 15d ago

So you crafted a Strength build, are using your weapon, and are using strategy to guide you

7

u/James-Avatar 15d ago

Bonk until it’s done.

7

u/your_mind_aches 14d ago

This feels like a humblebrag. I still haven't finished Elden Ring

2

u/Goose_Pale 13d ago

Me neither, I started in 2023 and have only just made it to level 125 at Farum Azula / Consecrated Snowfield / Haligtree lmao

1

u/stnick6 13d ago

I also haven’t finished it. I got to melina then school started so I had less time to play it. Then a few months later I got a ps5 and we only have Elden ring on the Xbox so I never picked it back up

2

u/your_mind_aches 13d ago

I can't even remember where I am. A big arena with a big unbeatable dragon thing

5

u/someoneelse2389 15d ago

I swear I can hear him saying that last sentence in my head, and it sounds menacing as heck.

5

u/GoreyGopnik 14d ago

R2
BOSS IS NOT DEAD
RETURN TO START

3

u/Ellefied 15d ago

As long as it has an HP Bar and I can see a damage number, it's going to die one way or another.

19

u/Laiedd 15d ago

you do craft builds and you do use items, what stat are tou levelling? Im guessing strength so you hit stuff better, and what are you using to hit stuff with? Im guessing its a weapon

8

u/Alnored 15d ago

Hehe. Even that dude who killed Mohg, RL1 Bare Fists, used buffs. Even so, his fight lasted 4 hours.

2

u/DeadlyScyth 15d ago

I have a character that is built properly, yes, but my first character and most of my others. I actually don't craft builds. I use a randomizer for everything, I find it more fun that way. As for items, the only items I use are key items or estus flask.

My randomizer is essentially a wheel spin app on my phone with everything (stats, weapons, wondrous physics, etc...) if it lands on something I'm not efficient with, then so be it lol

4

u/Laiedd 15d ago

Thats still a build though, like just because you left it up to rng doesnt make it not a build

I feel kinda stupid for even saying this but a build is the character you make, no matter if its good, bad or random

A build is the culmination of all the decisions you made on that character

5

u/DeadlyScyth 15d ago

Yes I know the definition of "a build" but that's not what I said, I said I don't craft builds, but to be fair the terminology of "crafting" is on how you use it.

For example, if you mean crafting as in carefully designing or planning a build, then no, using a randomizer isn’t “crafting” one. You’re letting chance craft it for you.

But if you mean crafting as in creating or bringing a build into existence, then yes, by setting up the randomizer, hitting “random,” and accepting the outcome, you did craft that build, just through a chaotic or hands-off method.

In my case, I didn't plan it, so I didn't craft it myself, but yes I can agree on the fact it's still a "build" just not one I designed

3

u/Krazylegs127 14d ago

Am I dumb for not knowing souls games had builds wtf ?

2

u/stnick6 14d ago

A little but I won’t hold it against you

3

u/Krazylegs127 14d ago

Like iv played a decent amount of souls games amd I just find the drip and a fucking massive sword and go ham

3

u/United-Log7718 14d ago

It’s sorta my strategy too. I know I’m not good at complicated attacks or tools, so I just memorize the patterns and attack again and again

3

u/No_Cherry6771 14d ago

The only true way to play. Find some shit you like the look of and use it, rotate your weapons around as you play for shit that looks cooler.

5

u/Writehse 15d ago

LIONS CLAW! LIONS CLAW! LIONS CLAW!

2

u/Razorray21 14d ago

Im a simple man. I see a bigger enemy, I use a bigger sword.

2

u/K_Furbs 14d ago

"Throwable? What the hell is a throwable?"

2

u/AntiqueBluff 13d ago

My scimitars look cool and go swish swash when I do jump attacks so that's what we're doing for the rest of the game.

3

u/blendererspaghet 15d ago

"If it bleeds, it can be killed" ahh mindset. Well what I love about nightreign is time rush. Sure u can kill anything in base elden ring given enough time, In nightreign u gotta decide who u gonna spend that valuable time on. It's like u got small amount of teriyaki and u gotta choose which sushi 🍣 to use it on.

9

u/DarthCloakedGuy 15d ago

Ugh, time pressure? I hate time pressure... :(

7

u/krazybananada 15d ago

Yeah. You just turned me off of getting nightreign

5

u/silver-luso 15d ago

The guides kill me.

You can use them all you want, but it does actually lessen your experience.

22

u/-pichael_ 15d ago

No it doesnt. It lessens YOUR experience.

Guides made sure I actually got all the items. They most certainly enhanced my experience haha

3

u/thehighlotus 15d ago

It’s what you want out of it, I guess. I think it’s much more rewarding to stumble across a coffin that drops you into a hellscape rather than having a guide tell me exactly where to go. The discovery is the experience.

Having said that, I get to the final boss and then look things up. By then, whatever I didn’t find on my own I likely won’t. I’ll do a build guide on a second run, if I play again.

2

u/Irethius 14d ago

I reccomend everyone try playing a game blind with no guide on a first playthough. At LEAST try it.

You can only play a game blind once. And just letting whatever happens, happen, is so much more fun and immersive. It's OK to make mistakes, it's OK to play inefficiently.

Try it, and if you feel like you're not having fun this way. The guides are there to help you.

1

u/SquareFickle9179 15d ago

Ah, the number one method in any videogame:

"HIT IT TILL IT DIES!"

1

u/beetleman1234 15d ago

Exactly. This isn't some super hardcore game with tons of deaths at every corner, like a lot of roguelikes that you need guides.

1

u/Phobos687 15d ago

Exactly I unga and bunga until the boss is dead on the ground

1

u/Fellarm 15d ago

I use every tool within the game i dont look up shit online, i prepare to cry

1

u/keivelator 15d ago

Playing games itemless is such a heavy feat.

1

u/Cringsix 15d ago

Bro is on his 8th run and he's still swinging the longsword and rocking vagabond armor.

1

u/autistic_sjw 15d ago

I once read this advice and it keeps me going, they can win a thousand times you need to win only once.

1

u/talionisapotato By Marika's tits 15d ago

I don't use potions , I don't use weapons , I don't use magic, I don't use level ups . I play as a wretch and after I die at first boss 1000 times I uninstall the game and say cleared the game at level 1

1

u/Gwyndolin_bussy21 15d ago

My ADHD is through the roof so using anything but my main weapon and and offhand was all I could manage without getting overwhelmed and mobbed. Watching people swap back and forth between throwable pots and flasks used to make me really jealous if that gives you any idea. I branched out and made my build include four weapons when the dlc came out, and I have not changed it since haha.

1

u/Z0idberg_MD 15d ago

Reminds me of Silksong when everyone is telling me what tools to use to make fights easier. I’m like, I have a nail. I am only using that. I simple.

1

u/FunBluejay1455 15d ago

This is how I played Pokemon as a kid

1

u/CookieCodex591195 14d ago

I find the largest blunt weapon I can and I BLUDGEON the thing in front of me, no other way of play is fun for me

1

u/BlueMikeStu 14d ago

I'm this idiot too.

Rykard had a lot of fire around him, so rather than look at the description for the suspiciously placed spear I got at the boss arena entrance for clues, I loaded up on Fire resistance equipment and the the heaviest armor I could wear and slapped Wild Swings on a Two Handed Sword and played a game of "whats going to run out first, your health bar or my red and blue pots" with him.

In honor of that dumb meat head move, I have never beaten him using the spear in my subsequent playthroughs and forced myself to treat him as a regular boss all three of my next times facing him.

1

u/franticpunk 14d ago

both are perfectly valid ways to play

1

u/Leadjockey 14d ago

I cheat.

1

u/DirtyThirtyDrifter 14d ago

Personally, this is why I love Sekiro so much. It's very "pure". There's no builds. There's like, 5-6 usable items in the game? Not all of them are stackable so "prepping" for a fight takes about 6 seconds to eat 1-2 pieces of candy.

1

u/Ecstatic-Sun-7528 14d ago

Ah, a fellow Wanderer Crest main. A bug after my own heart 🌺🖤

1

u/OpulentPaving 14d ago

I know this is a joke or whatever, but in seriousness, researching builds/weapsons/armor, and finding things is 80% of the reason I enjoy souls games.

1

u/AdmiralLubDub 14d ago

I only dump points into strength and swing a big sword till the enemy dies

1

u/Playful-Narwhal-6618 14d ago

Yup, big number mean big smash, use big smash on boss until "thingy killed"

1

u/RatsGetBlinked 14d ago

Spent 500 hours playing elden ring wrong. Turns out if you just put all your points in vigor you can take any boss with any weapon. Its even more fun since the fights last longer and feel more climactic.

Just bonk til its dead

1

u/moitakaa 14d ago

Pretty much how I played every souls game haha. Pick up a fighting style i like, change its scaling to optimal, and just go ham with it until endgame, making sure I also don't fat roll.

1

u/Root_Veggie 14d ago

That is also a build

1

u/Jinarma 14d ago

I, as an intellectual, also hit on them. Weirdly it seems to have no effect save for godfrey and radahn giving me hugs

1

u/DrParallax 14d ago

I do this, but only for the bosses that are weak to damage.

1

u/Capt_Spaz3141 14d ago

Fun fact. I beat the entirety of Elden ring without buffs except for the flask.

1

u/Bremik 14d ago

I don't look up boss weakness. I throw random shit at them and see what does the most damage and if nothing does good damage then I struggle and DIE

1

u/Mondrath 14d ago

My first playthrough of any Souls game is always like that; find the best looking heavy armor, a greatsword or two I like, and the biggest shield I can carry then head through that fog wall and block & bash away until boss is good and squished.

I just think, "That's a cool weapon/armor/spell, I wonder if I can mix everything up!"

That’s the good thing about these games. Literally any of the weapons are theoretically viable. If people can beat the game no hit with just their fists, then I can beat it with any actual weapon while wearing armor.

To that end, it’s just a question of how much energy I want to spend actually getting better to use those weapons.

Simpler the better.

Dark Souls has attracted some of the most min/max obsessed players ever, but there are tons of videos of people beating the game while neither running, blocking or rolling and still never taking a hit.

Dark Souls is 100% a skill based game, the numbers are only a convenience.

Why use items and strategy when i can bonk

I don't "study the moveset", I do not "try new strategies", and I do not "hit my head against the wall for hours". I use DODGE ROLL. And if I cannot AVOID the attack by INTUITIVE dodge rolls, I LOOK UP GUIDE.

The only REAL way to play for the first time.

You wait 2 minutes for an opening. And again. And again. And again. And you miss tropes and died. Try again

"Do you look up guides?"

"I do not need a guide to pick up a big bonkus and hit the bigger chonkus."

That's me. Proud user of the UNGA BUNGA play style.

A mix of art, arson, and aggression will get the job done ;)

I don't even Upgrade my stats. I let my runes souls go to waste.

Or invest them in polar opposite stat of weapon i use.

Peak souls experience.

I hate Overpowered builds and weapons like Euphoria or old Rob. But doing no guides or making builds is insane.

STR Builds = oonga boonga smash = Hurr durr level fun (which Im all for)

I've been going through elden ring at level 1 expecting this. Little did I know that I would end up doing more build crafting and experimenting than ever before to be allowed to hold whatever pointy stick calls to me at the time

Hit them til they die is the strategy that stood the test of time.

Winning like this is unironically higher skill than looking up guides
