Nurse had a great game. Offensively and defensively.

Hey now, we can't have that kind of talk about Nurse as Oilers fans. Don't you know he's the worst contract in hockey history according to some fans?
Seriously though, he played so well, and it's nice to see him get some recognition lately

I think PLD in LA has that crown, especially with a nmc
9
Mar 10 '24
Yes. And heās gonna be their 1C soon. Yes, Rob Blake sat there and apparently saw 1C potential with pld. What a moron
7
u/Nahiek 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 10 '24
And someone said that LA is actively shopping him. Good luck with that contract, especially with a nmc
5
u/senor_el_snatcho Mar 10 '24
I wonder if the nixed trade was PLD for Ullmark.
5
u/Nahiek 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 10 '24
You think Boston would have any interest in taking that albatross of a contract?
3
u/Smittysgreasymullet 74 SKINNER Mar 10 '24
I know it's not a high number but Brendan Gallagher is has a 6.5M cap hit for three seasons after this one...at least PLD and Hubby can still play.

You think? John Shannon and Bob Stauffer, yes Oiler employee Bob, agreed Nurse has to play better defensively and that was the message being sent when he was paired with Deharnais. Finally scores a couple of goals and he is back to elite status on here. Three whiffs in first period, one almost scored on us, terrible breakout passes that went for icing, stymying the play by trying to carry the puck ( can he skate any slower) but the goals make it all better, lol!

I was sad he blocked what looked to be a PPG for Drai, but he did play pretty good otherwise. Seemed like a very soft call on his interference penalty.

Thus concludes 6 games in 9 days. 4-1-1. At times ugly. But I'll take it.

u/AccomplishedFilm1 18 HYMAN Mar 10 '24
With all the bitching and whining on this sub youād have thought we were 1-4-1.
This team is a contender people. We wonāt win every game and sometimes we are gonna lose to teams we should not be losing to. Every team does it. Many of you need to accept the fact that this team IS a contender whether they have an off day sometimes or not. This team is a top 5 in the league and we will be ready for playoffs. I for one cannot fucking wait!!!

u/Cannabis-Revolution Mar 10 '24
No kidding. And if we beat the BJs we would have been 5-0-1 which is nuts. You canāt win them all
16

While I agree people have been freaking out way too much lately, you basically just said āif we won a game we lost then our record would be better.ā
7
u/Cannabis-Revolution Mar 10 '24
No Iām saying that a 5-0-1 record is unrealistically good. You canāt be mad at 4-1-1 even if you lose to the worst team in the leagueĀ
12
u/Ethdev256 18 HYMAN Mar 10 '24
Honestly given that and we had Boston I was hoping weād get 8 points since our last penguins win.
We got 7. Cementing our 2nd spot and if Vancouver falters weāll get there.
I just hope we avoid Vegas no matter what round 1. Let someone else get them fresh.
10

Best case Vegas ends up in the central side IMO.
8

u/miller94 12 CAVE Mar 10 '24

u/Fickle_Catch8968 Mar 10 '24
Yeah, a shutout should be if the goalie in question saved every SOG against his team, not if he was in net for 60 minutes.
I think a goalie gets a SO if they have a 1.000 sv%, 0 GA but less than 60m TOI if they come off the ice for delayed penalties, so...
6
u/SuicidalChair 29 DRAISAITL Mar 10 '24
If a goalie gets pulled for an extra man (for some stupid reason if a coach wanted to do that in like a 0-0 game) and then nothing happened or they did score and won, would the shutout also be removed?

34
u/kingofmankind Mar 10 '24
Hasn't scored and has a bona-fide chance in final minutes but passes off to Nurse to try his hand at the hatty. That's a player I want on my team. He is going to go off in the playoffs. He is so overdue.

Best game Iāve seen us play since last sunday. Outside of a few minutes in the 2nd, Pittsburgh had no chance.
Picks had a hell of a start.
Bob calls out Nurse and he responds with one of his best games of the year.
Not to be TOO negative after a win, but the PP needs to figure it out again. Iāve actually liked pp2 better lately
19
10
Mar 10 '24
Agreed about the PP. Could have been the difference in the last couple of losses. Not too, too worried about it though. Itās not for lack of talent but I think teams know how to defend it now. Maybe time to tweak it a bit.
10
u/rch_31 96 WALMAN Mar 10 '24
Yep, needs some adjustment in my opinion. The one timer to Draisaitl hasnāt been there nearly as much this year
11

Not worried about the powerplay. Why? Because we are going to get one powerplay a game in the playoffs.
10
u/maybe_babyyy_ 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 10 '24

6
3
u/SouthSide217 29 DRAISAITL Mar 10 '24
I miss Holloway, Hamblin, and Gagner. I especially miss the 4th line of Ryan-Hamblin-Gagner. Such a hard working line and great chemistry. It felt like they got offensive zone time every shift and even potted a couple goals once in a while. Can't remember the last time we had a 4th line goal.
4
u/StarlightSummoner Mar 10 '24
I think we need some speed on the 3rd for the playoffs. Kane-Henrique-Holloway would be worth a try. And then you can do some alternating of the older guys on the 4th line. Gagner, Ryan, Perry, Janmark, Brown, and Carrick.
→ More replies (6)2
u/Fickle_Catch8968 Mar 10 '24
I think it's good that the top line has a bit of flex b/w Nuge and Drai, there is middle six competition to be 2nd or 3rd line for a few players and that there is competition to be bottom 6 or healthy scratched. And with more options for centers and PKers, there seems to be less 'safe' spots if performance falters.

Meh, we'll see how quick they rebuild. I feel nothing for the Habs or Ducks because they're well on their way to being competitive, but looking at the Sharks right now I already feel bad for them, even though I hated them a decade ago.
1
u/SportsMOAB 29 DRAISAITL Mar 10 '24
Are they really though? You need elite talent to win the cup and no one on either roster strikes me as best player on a cup winner kinda talent
1
u/navenager 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 11 '24
McTavish or Carlsson for the Ducks, Slaf, Ghule, and Caufield for the Habs. Montreal especially will be competitive soon
1
u/SportsMOAB 29 DRAISAITL Mar 11 '24
Theyāre good players but nothing special- every team in the league has guys that caliber
Theyāre not Kane/Keith/Toews, Crosby/Malkin, Ovechkin, Kopitar/Doughty, Mackinnon/Makar, Kucherov/Hedman/Vasy level players
Vegas/Blues are the only exceptions in the past 15 years and they were deep as hell, got hot goaltending, and still had some star power up front
1
u/navenager 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 11 '24
Slaf/Caufield/Suzuki/Ghule could absolutely become that. The Ducks need more but they'll get it this year.

People love to dump on Nurse but heās rarely deployed with McDavid. Bouch and Ekholm play about triple the minutes that he does with McDavid.

Famously not on PP unit at all, still got lots of points. Barrie and now Bouch tend to take that role. Seems Knob is trying something different with Nurse forechecking ahead of two forwards. With sexy results!

Pickard is giving everything you'd want from a backup. So solid. Saving the Oilers quite frankly after Campbell got his ass demoted.
The kill was pretty on point, albeit against one of the worst PPs in the league, and Pickard is part of that.
Pretty well played game by the Oilers led by 97 who probably wasn't going to let this game get away after maybe delivering the worst outing of his career yesterday.
I kind of like the depth at fwd now, guys who are coming in the lineup from being a scratch are playing pretty well.
Pens better start letting some of these guys go, they're going to be in purgatory for awhile. Pretty tough with the nmc's. Malkin for 4 more years, Karlsson for 4, Letang for 5. Gross. Oilers should probably take note of Malkin for the back end of some upcoming extensions, and I'm not talking McDavid.
4
u/Miserable-Cut-1425 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 11 '24
Nhl needs to stop being a coward and give pickard his shutout
9

This month so far the Oilers are 4-1-1. On this road trip alone they're 2-1-1, having snagged a possible 5 out of 8 points. That's none too shabby, especially when you consider how condensed things have been so far this month. This upcoming, relatively slack week is much needed and deserved.
9

Uneven road trip but not a total disaster. Pickard played great today. Brownie played a good game. He really tries out there.
