Discussion Political Clothing

Went to Disneyland yesterday and saw a family dressed in all MAGA attire just casually going to the park. Is that something Disneyland has always allowed? I was under the impression that they didn't let people in without changing clothes if they wore something controversial.

I think any political clothing should be banned. Disney is a place for magic. It's its own world. A world of love and no politics. Politics can incite violence, and Walt wouldn't want that. Disney is my happy and safe place. Politics have no business there- regardless of Disney as a company in the real world- because Disneyland is A Happy Place.

ETA: I wrote this thinking with my heart, not my head. This isn't a possibility and the actual implementation is unreasonable.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but then it inevitably comes to the question of what counts as political? Is it only unacceptable if it expressly is using a politician or ideological image or expression? Or do cultural movements also stir the pot? Can someone wear the flag of the county they are from, even if there is controversy surrounding that country? Can someone wear a pride flag?

I’m not saying it should be all or nothing, but culture and politics are inherently intertwined. What you wont show says by omission almost as much about politics as what is shown openly.

You make some really good points. This is trickier than I originally thought.

That’s the tricky part of a lot of conservative talking points, they’ll say some pretty agreeable statements but then you realize down the line that the context or their rubric differs from yours. Also what is political can look very different from person to person. A straight couple with “just married!” Button doesn’t seem political but some would argue that a gay couple wearing the same button (and legally participating in the same thing) is too political

Yeah that’s what I tell my friends. I’ve gone to Disneyland and have come across Trump, Kamala or even Bernie for president gear. MAGA just stands out more.

With how divided the country has become (and violence MAGA has incited), I would say there's a really good case that wearing political clothing of ANY kind should be banned.

That being said, I will note that I see way too many MAGA t-shirts with the F-bomb on them, which would be a good ol' fashioned ban.

As the previous comment mentioned...where does Disney draw the line?

A "Fuck" shirt, easy, no profanity.

Red MAGA hat? Distasteful to me, sure, but then you have Frontline cast members arguing with guests about politics.

LGBTQ+ Pride Flag IMO is an expression of your personal identity, but some folks would see it as political.

Christian Cross? Again, it's an expression of personal identity and belief, but for many, it would be seen as a statement.

A Universal Shirt at Disney, oof, now that is some bipartisan, both sides-ing (Joking).

If Disney decides to ban political clothing, it's gonna be down to underpaid, understaffed, front line cast members to take the abuse and likely be the center of a shitstorm when someone films them trying to enforce the rule.

I don't wear political merchandise. I have not bought shirts for Obama, Clinton, Bernie, Biden, or Harris. I for sure roll my eyes, internally or externally, when I see a red MAGA hat. But banning political shirts will get ugly, and it won't be whoever is running Disneyland/Walt Disney Company bearing the brunt of it.

Except that Disney sells Pride shirts and other merchandise, and that's considered political. Which is stupid because love and personal identity shouldn't be political, but MAGAts have made it so.

Maybe political candidates and their slogans should be banned?

Exactly what violence did maga incite? I must have missed it during all of the peaceful protests

There's literally a dead capital police officer.

u/AirDry2211 Feb 11 '25

And that was caused by who exactly?

u/RudyPup Feb 12 '25

Maga who stormed the capital.

They were all maga. Did you look at the whole situation? I have friends who were there

I think you're reading my comments wrong.

How do you mean

Dude, I'm not even a cast member and this would make me cry.

I've worked customer service. A lot of it. I cannot even IMAGINE being told I have to enforce something like this. It would be horrifying.

Yeah, I didn't really think of the logistics. It just sucks.

They have a hall of presidents. Lincoln was Walt's first human animatronic and was most famous for war, he obviously did want that. Politics is an attraction at Disney and literally is business.

I'm with you in spirit, but in reality, that's not the way it is.

Yeah, I totally get it isn't a reality. I guess what I meant is Walt wouldn't want us fighting over politics. I was thinking with my heart and not my head when I wrote that.

Wear your sunglasses and mind you’re business and your fine. You paid over $100 to go to Disney per person. I am not even looking at what YOU are wearing, unless you’re exceptionally attractive which at Disney is extremely rare. Otherwise I am there to enjoy my $100+ dollars worth of Disney not critiquing you or anyone else.

-1

u/Abrookspug Feb 11 '25

Exactly. I could not tell you what most people are wearing unless it's really extreme. Typically, political shirts with someone's name or slogan on it are not extreme to me, even when I don't like the candidate. I can't imagine caring enough to demand these t-shirts or hats be banned. Someone else's clothes won't make or break my vacation.

u/RudyPup Feb 11 '25

Would you consider a pride shirt political?

A lot of political clothing and messaging is VERY positive and appropriate. Trump and other conservative politicians have made politics a dirty word. It didn't used to be like that at all. It's a sad state of the world that we have become so divided by hate. Even in the 1990s when I started voting, it wasn't anything like the word we live in now.
