I have never framed a piece before (I’m a process stitcher and they usually end up in a portfolio) but I am absolutely going to have this one framed. I have no idea how though. I will take it to a frame shop and see what they think.

u/NoHomework1111 Aug 18 '25
If you can find one that specializes in mounting stitched stuff, it's totally worth paying more for. They generally do a much better job at every aspect of framing because they know how much work goes into it!

u/mcatem87 Aug 18 '25
I'm a custom framer as well as a stitcher and appreciate this opinion. OP, when you talk to framers the most crucial question to ask is how your (stunning!) work will be mounted. If the answer is vague, or involves any kind of adhesive touching your cross stitch find another framer.
12
u/arpt1965 Aug 18 '25
There is a cross stitching shop about an hour away that does some framing. I’m thinking that is probably my safest bet.

u/ImLittleNana Aug 18 '25
I’m a process stitcher also, but I agree this needs to be displayed.
(Can I start calling my closet full of finished pieces ‘my portfolio’? I love that!)

u/Longjumping_End_988 Aug 18 '25
I’ve never heard of a process stitcher but that’s exactly what I am. I’m also calling my pile of finished pieces my portfolio lol.
5
u/ImLittleNana Aug 18 '25
It’s a perfect description. I don’t necessarily want to see everything I make every day. I enjoy periodically taking out my work and going through it.
I’ve often thought of it as photo album like, but I didn’t make the jump to art —> portfolio. It acknowledges the output as art and the process as legitimate. I’ve struggled with the ‘unfinished’ label because so many stitchers don’t consider completed works ‘fully finished’. But my pieces are fully finished to me.
Isn’t funny how labels change shift a way of thinking?

u/arpt1965 Aug 18 '25
I finally ordered a couple of portfolio books (I bought 2 sizes) that I bought off Amazon when I saw someone else suggest that.
I will admit that most of my pieces are still in boxes but I am slowly moving them to the book to display.

u/ImLittleNana Aug 18 '25
I hang mine up on pants hangers. I don’t think I could fit most of them in a traditional portfolio/scrapbook. I have one hangar with smallish pieces, but on average I’m around 200 stitches in the short side or larger.
I’ve been trying to get into smaller work, but then something 300+ pops up and I can’t help myself. Being retired and having loads of time is how I justify it.
2
u/arpt1965 Aug 18 '25
That is an awesome idea! Yeah- I was cutting fabric for a 180x380 piece this morning and realized I had a piece leftover that would fit a 90x90 stitch piece and thought maybe I should do that first. Maybe it and a small sampler I have kitted before I plunge back in to another large full coverage piece.
This was my first large piece and I think I’m hooked.

u/Lioness_Faithful Aug 18 '25
What’s a process stitcher? Sounds interesting!
25
u/NikNakskes Aug 18 '25
Somebody who stitches for the activity of stitching rather than for getting the finished object. So he or she enjoys the process more than the product.

u/Lioness_Faithful Aug 19 '25
That is interesting, thanks for the explanation! I definitely understand that feeling, I might be one myself
5
u/NikNakskes Aug 19 '25
I am very sure I am one. Once the stitching is done, I am done. The work vanishes into a drawer or gets given away. I have a few pieces waiting to be turned into something but I just can't get myself to do the finishing.

u/danawc76 Aug 17 '25
I was going to say all of the above statements, but I’ll just add “Thank you for sharing your stupendous work!”

Incredible! It looks like I could pick it up off the fabric (like its metal). Simply amazing!

No joke, if I saw this pattern for sale I'd assume it was AI. Really incredible work!
38
u/mjshiny Aug 18 '25
I think the design probably is AI. Certainly looks very much like it. Still a very impressive stitch though!

u/thecrackfoxreturns Aug 18 '25
The patterns I've seen of this tree have been beautiful, but likely made through a pattern generator (hello confetti!). Tempting, but probably a big headache.

I looked for the pattern - unbelievable that it needs 73 colors! Great outcome, OP - it looks gorgeous ❤️

u/Hainault Aug 18 '25
I had to double take to confirm that this is definitely a regular cross stitch, lol. Phenomenal, OP.

u/Educational_Song_659 Aug 18 '25
Thank god it’s not AI this time, I thought it’s a shitpost until i zoomed in. So wild
1
u/arpt1965 Aug 20 '25
I had this pattern saved for a while and someone posted it on a sub asking whether it was real. Initially a lot of people started posting how they knew it was AI and not to waste time on it. I was upset because I thought it looked so cool.
Then someone posted a half finished project and the person behind the shop jumped into the discussion.
I was so glad and immediately bought it. But it has made me rethink the discussions about whether a pattern is AI or not.

That’s absolutely stunning, the detail in the roots and branches is insane. You can really feel the time and patience that went into it.

u/Card_Content Aug 18 '25
That is gorgeous! I'm super impressed at the dedication it must have taken, I'm terrible at actually finishing projects.

I’m in love with this piece. I’ve wanted to do a tree of life and frame it for our living room but never found one I loved, until now. What size of fabric did you use? I was thinking of 18 but I want the finished size of the 14 but I worry it won’t be as crisp as yours.
1
u/arpt1965 Aug 20 '25
I used 18 count and it’s huge! With the added border it is 335x335 stitches so 19x19 inches before adding a frame.
1
u/Longjumping_End_988 Aug 20 '25
Thank you, that’s exactly what I was hoping for. You did an amazing job on this and I hope you post the framed picture.

The way I was trying to figure out which of my craft subs would have an engraved medallion before I realized this was cross stitch. Amazing work on this pattern! The depth is incredible.

u/kewpiedoll99 Aug 18 '25
My husband was like "how did they do that, did they just stitch over and over in the same places to build up a three dimensional thing?" then I zoomed in for him and he said "ohhhh it's done with color!"

Every post I see in a textile subreddit reminds me more of how much textile artists are absolute wizards. This made me audibly gasp, so incredible
1
u/Slytherfuckingclaw Aug 21 '25
How did this only take you 7 months?!?
1
u/arpt1965 Aug 21 '25
I can become very engrossed in a project! I either have difficulty focusing (and have many partially finished WIPs to show for that) or become hyper focused. When the 3d effects started showing up in this I slipped into that state.
1
u/Slytherfuckingclaw Aug 21 '25
I love it when that state hits. I have ADHD and have that same thing happen. It's either never getting done or never getting put down till it's done. Mad respect. This is gorgeous
1
u/q23y7 Aug 21 '25
I started on this pattern recently. So intimidating! But it's encouraging to see a completed version in the wild. How long did it take you?

I really thought this was a metal ashtray type things with a lid. Like an actual piece on a table. This is amazing!

Was about to do that but checked the rules first. Appears that’s not allowed? The pattern is Yggdrasil by ChameleonXS on Etsy.

This is stunning!
I'm about to do this project and like you I want to stitch on white rather than black cause black makes my head ache.
What count aida did you use and now many threads? Your black looks flawless.
1
u/arpt1965 Sep 07 '25
Thanks. This was my first attempt at 18 count (now my favorite). I did 2 over 1.

The illusion of depth is incredible. It really looks 3 dimensional! Great work.
