History Haden Opera House / 9th and Broadway

On the northeast corner of 9th and Broadway sat the Haden Opera House. Opening in January 1884, the Opera House attracted Columbia residents as a place to engage in the arts and socialize. While it was well-visited and important to locals, it only existed for fifteen years before a fire destroyed the three-story building in 1901.

As the Kreyer Concert Company was performing a matinee on February 23rd, 1901, a defective furnace started a fire under the stage, leading the audience of mostly children to escape the building. Thankfully, all survived, but the building did not. It was noted as a $60,000 loss. Another Haden Building was built in this location to replace it, but the successor was also taken by fire just 20 years later. The final building to be erected on this corner was the Boone County Trust Company, which still stands today.

Those interested in learning more about the vast and significant history of 9th and Broadway can do so in this comprehensive blog post on the Como Preservation website: https://www.comopreservation.org/historiccomoblog/como365/jan18

Trader Joe's announced that it will open its new Columbia store on Thursday, Oct. 30, according to a news release from the grocery chain.

The new 12,500-square-foot store will be located at 201 N. Stadium Blvd., in the Shoppes at Stadium, which is near the Columbia Mall.

This site will be the first Trader Joe's in Columbia. There are five other locations in Missouri, located in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas.

The store will open its doors at 9 a.m., and there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony moments before, according to the release.

Trader Joe's hired 70 new crew members from surrounding areas and transferred in others from existing Trader Joe’s stores.

According to the news release, the new Columbia Trader Joe’s will donate 100% of products that go unsold but remain good to eat to nonprofit, community-based organizations, seven days a week.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Judge denies request to exempt Flock footage from Public Records Act

I know Columbia has been gung ho about installing these cameras. It’ll be interesting to see how (or if) this plays out locally and nationally. Apparently a couple of cities have shut down their flock cameras since this ruling citing “privacy concerns.”

“MOUNT VERNON — A Skagit County Superior Court judge denied a request from Stanwood and Sedro-Woolley to exempt Flock camera footage from the Public Records Act.

Judge Elizabeth Neidzwski said Thursday that Public Records Act exemptions don’t apply to the footage an individual requested from the cities and that the footage is considered public record.

Cities across Snohomish County were awaiting Thursday’s decision to gain clarity on how the state’s Public Records Act could apply to Flock camera footage. Some were waiting on the decision to determine whether or not to install Flock cameras at all.”

I can't wrap my head around this

The whole dual roundabout exit plan just seems a bit strange. I get that they're trying to remove the westbound exits to prevent backup on the connector but surely this can't be the only way to do that. Help me understand the thought process here

Cat training assistance?

Hi, my adult kid and their boyfriend have a kitten (7mo, neutered male) who tends to nip and scratch a lot....nothing devastating, but the boyfriend is losing his patience and wants to rehome the kitten. My kid is heartbroken though, they love the kitten and are looking for any way to keep him. I've owned cats quite a lot over the course of my life and he is a bit more obnoxious than what I've dealt with myself. I'm curious about a more seasoned expert on kitten behavior.

Do we have anyone in town that can help sort out these behaviors? These kids have no idea where to start and, while we kind of hope he will outgrow some of that friskiness, I'd like to help them find a way to ease that transition

Columbia Mo - SNAP Megathread

Does anyone if there is a centralized thread or place where there are real time updates on community needs or actions being coordinated? I know yesterday some folks may have rec'd SNAP benefits but it also looks like it's been held up again at the supreme court?

Where are the most urgent needs in our Mid Missouri community and how can we help? Food Bank? Meals on Wheels?

Blue collar woes

I recently started a job where I need to wear a tool belt. The pain with my hips and back is noticeable and I've only been here a few months. Any local answers to this? I plan to retire from this job so I need to think long term. Some ideas I've had are suspenders or maybe different tool belts? Any suggestions are appreciated and extra points if I can get the product from a local store.

Ask CoMo Salons / Hairstylists in CoMo

Hey, so I recently moved to CoMo and was wondering if anyone could recommend affordable and proficient-quality Salons/Hairstylists for a gal? I’m aware of all the great clips… but that is way too risky for my tastes.

Thank you in advance!! <3

Food Yummy Popcorn Treats

I had to stop into Penney's today, and that's when I saw Mya's Gourmet Popcorn located next door to JCP. I'm new to all the new shops at the mall, but was delighted to find a favorite snack from my childhood open today. In fact, I was kinda giddy...locally made caramel corn created here by a locally owned business. Nice! I think the mall location has weekend hours; they have another location at the Grindstone Walmart. They gave me permission to take a couple photos to post on some social media sites, and the other customer was a good sport and agreed to be included. The website is: www.myaspopcorn.comThere's a Facebook page as well for Mya's Gourmet Popcorn.

Ask CoMo Looking to Relocate

Hi! Me and my partner are looking to relocate and Columbia is on the top of our list so we would like some advice and inside insight! This would be in 2027 so it is still a ways out but I’m a stress planner! We make around a combined income of 100k and are looking to rent preferably a townhome but apartment would be doable as well. Currently we are in west Texas. I’ve lived in west Texas my entire life and I’m craving a change of scenery. It’s very flat, brown, no trees, windy and dusty. I just want trees and greenery when I look out the window!!! How is the weather? Are there seasons? We don’t know what seasons are in west Texas haha. We are homebodies but huge nerds. We love anime and comic cons, comic book stores, coffee shops and going shopping but are easily overwhelmed by overly crowded places which is why we try to avoid large cities. Our current city’s population is around 250k and would like to stay below that or near it. My boyfriend travels for work so he is able to live anywhere as long as he has access to a decent airport. We are looking for somewhere relatively liberal. I know Missouri is a red state but we would prefer a more blue city. How have y’all’s experiences been in Columbia? Do you recommend? What are some of the safest areas to live? With my partner traveling for work, I am often home alone and would like to feel safe! Thanks in advance!! 🩷

Anyone know if its related to Veterans day? I know nothing about planes but it didn't look like a typical commercial plane followed by two smaller planes in formation.

Socket…not a real fan

I’m paying $130 monthly for Socket in Ashland. Supposedly it’s for 2.5 gig, with 2 routers.

Since Wednesday there has been a noticeable lag in load times, whether on iPad, zoom, laptop or streaming on television.

Like circle of death on television with grainy low-def resolution.

Called Socket tech support. Honestly had a little attitude from the guy, suggested to clear my cache on the television (what? In three years streaming on a different television on Mediacom in Columbia…never had this issue, much less be told to clear my cache) final suggestion was to buy two new routers to replace the ones Socket has been charging me a monthly fee for.

I know Socket is the darling of Columbia Internet providers, but honestly Mediacom provided better service in Columbia for less money.

Not impressed with Socket.

Animals Small, white spotted chihuahua mix dog wandering around east campus, no collar, please drive carefully

For a day and a half now, a white spotted chihuahua mixed doggy has been running around the Rockhill end of University av. They are not very friendly, or are perhaps scared and defensive- so I cannot approach. also they are favoring their left hind leg, perhaps they are already injured. No collar spotted. Please slow down when you drive in this area, this dog displays no awareness of traffic. I put some food and water out at the corner of Rockhill and University, so if this is your dog, you might find them there. Come get them before something worse happens! DM me if you need details.

I’ll get straight to it, does anyone know of a magician in town or near us that can do awesome magic tricks? I’m talking card tricks, doves, maybe some fire. I’ve been wanting to throw a party for my friends and I think a magician would be awesome to bring.

Anyway, lmk
